and now for something completely different: K-State brings back Snyder
I know we're hopelessly focused on ludicrous computer algorithms and the endless rooting scenarios we may have before us, but temporarily avert your eyes and notice that Kansas State has now officially brought Bill Snyder back from a 3-year retirement to coach their team. It was not that long ago this was considered by some to be an up and coming position, now the 69 year old Snyder will attempt to re-enter the modern college game amid the most competitive conference in the country.
Now Snyder deserves tremendous credit for building a respectable national program. He was rightfully criticized for scheduling one of the nation's lightest and fluffiest schedules on an annual basis; however the fact remains that he took an atrocious program and turned it into a top 25 regular. The moderately high expectations he set are part of the reason Ron Prince was briskly ushered aside. However, there are multiple problems with this hire. Football coaches rarely return to their former digs and light things up (e.g. John Robinson) as the pressure to match prior success in considerable. Second, coaches rarely come out of retirement and adapt to their new environments properly (Joe Gibbs, Parcells in Dallas). If Snyder found his passion to coach too low or the demands of the job too high for a man in his late 60's it's hard to see how his situation would be improved now. Regardless of the reasons, it must be noted his last two teams went 9-13. The game has evolved much since he last took the field, and the Big 12 is better than ever.

Terrible Hire
I really don’t know what K-State is thinking. Not only is this bad for the immediate future, but long term its even worse. K-State needs to build their program for long term success, not a quick fix which won’t even happen under Snyder. This is bad and could set back K-State for years. Everybody in the Big 12 is improving (even us), except K-State. I think he was pressured back into the job from K-State alum. I see him walking out midway through the season.
Unbelievable hire, worse imagination than our hire of Sherman.
did anyone really ever think that KSU
was an up and coming position? It’s one of the worst BCS jobs out there. Re-hiring Snyder is just sad, such a short-sighted move.
Even if it's not an up and comer...
It’s still got to work at being as best as it can be within the Big 12. To pick an old guy who’s been retired for three years doesn’t speak well to future relevancy. At least in two of those three years he’s been out of retirement, KSU beat Texas. I doubt that is likely to continue next year and beyond.
Bad move
It reeks of desperation…and Neb darn near did the same thing a few years back. Three to four more years of mediocre to bad football for another team in the north.
I completely agree. I think KSU would have been better off giving Prince another year than do this.
The K-State blog had some great information on the Prince firing, I look forward to seeing what they say about this. There are some good candidates out there, and K-State should have done everything possible to get Gary Patterson. I guess he didn’t want it. I’m sure they contacted him.
