Maui Day 3: Consolation Game vs. Oregon Open Thread

Less than a day after falling to No. 8 Notre Dame, Texas hits the hardwood against the Oregon Ducks (3-2) in the third place game of the Maui Invitational.

Oregon finds themselves in this game after defeating Alabama, 92-69, on Monday before falling to No. 1 North Carolina, 98-69, yesterday.

After last night's game, I'm not sure what we will see from the Longhorns. Hopefully, Texas can get back to playing pressure man-to-man defense and converting turnovers into easy points. But after two games in the last 48 hours, who knows where our legs are.

I'd also like to see Justin Mason take control of the game on the offensive end. This means feeding the post, encouraging his teammates to make more than one pass before shooting, and making sure that his fellow perimeter players don't just settle for jump shots. Next, Dexter Pittman, Connor Atchley, and Gary Johnson need to establish themselves in the paint and allow the Longhorns to play from the inside out. Feed the post first and the open perimeter looks will materialize.

Last, I will be watching shot selection closely. Damion James and AJ Abrams certainly have green lights from Coach Rick Barnes but forced shots will not help this team develop on offense, regardless if they go in or not.

Tip time is 3:30 pm on ESPN2.

Join me as the Longhorns look to bounce back quickly.

7-2 Oregon, under 16

We’ve gotten the ball in the post four times = 0/3 and a turnover. Settle down big guys. The ball is not on fire. If Chap and Gary take their time, they will be much more dangerous.

I was just about to say that

I think Mason might struggle some games, but his ball handling this year is much improved. His athleticism, burst and passing ability makes him an infinitely better option than AJ at the point. I’m totally comfortable with him running the point, his aggressiveness is exactly what we need. This will allow Ward and Balbay time to learn and develop, without having the pressures of the starting PG spot on their shoulders only.

I do doubt that Samson will ever coach in college again. It’s just not worth it. He has wrecked his last two programs.

Very few, if any, athletic directors are going to give him another shot.

found on the all-knowing and never-wrong wikipedia:

On November 25, 2008, the NCAA slapped Indiana with three years’ probation for violations largely tied to Sampson’s watch. It also imposed a five-year show-cause order on Sampson, meaning that no NCAA member school would be able to hire Sampson without demonstrating to the NCAA that Sampson has served his punishment. However, most NCAA members will not even consider hiring a coach with an outstanding show-cause order, so the show-cause will likely have the effect of banning Sampson from coaching at the major-college level until 2013. A similar incident happened to Todd Bozeman, who was slapped with an eight-year show-cause order in 1996 and was unable to find work in the college ranks again until 2006. Sendorff, now an assistant coach at Ball State, was hit with a three-year show-cause order.

show cause =

I think that means the next five years, if an NCAA team wants to hire him, they have to thoroughly explain why they want to hire him, and it must be approved. At least, that’s how it was explained earlier today.

66-49 Tx, under 4

James and Mason simply took over this game in the second half. Well done by both guys.

This game would have been closer had Oregon been able to sink their free throws but they didn’t and Texas ran away.

If any NCAA team wants to hire Samson

they should immediately be penalized. Saves the time and money spent investigating the scumbag.

Justin Mason

I don’t have the best memory for individual performances, but this may have been Mason’s best performance as a Horn.

I think we need 12+ pts a game from mase this year. We need the point production that we’ve lost from DJ leaving.

Nice effort

Horns take third place 70-57. Players of the game Justin Mason and Damion James. Awesome games by both.

Next game Sunday back in Austin vs. Rice.

Now, it’s time to beat the shit out of the Aggies.

What a difference a day makes

for Damion James. 9-11 from the field is insanely efficient. Didn’t get to watch the game, so can someone tell me what kind of shots he took mostly?

Kinda weird how Mason went from a total non-factor in our offense to being our 2nd leading scorer. He is definitely our starting PG and will be for quite some time.

Johnson wasn’t real efficient today, but I want him to keep shooting. Unlike Abrams, he can get to the line and follow his own shot.

Connor once again a no-show on offense. Big ole goose egg on the point total. At least he was active on the boards and blocked a few shots. Unlike Abrams, at least he can help the team win when he’s not dominating the ball.

Why did Pittman only get 7 minutes today? I’m guessing the 4 fouls had something to do with that. Not good.

Only 4 minutes for Wingman, and Chapman got 13 but didn’t really do much.

What ever happened to Matt Hill? I remember Barnes being complimentary of him before the season started. Did he get hurt again?

Oh, and Abrams...

Once again an inefficient day, but at least he controlled himself today with JUST 11 shot attempts. There’s a huge difference from 7 missed shots and 19 missed shots like yesterday. Hey, he got 2 assists! 3 steals is not bad. If your D isn’t good, might as well clog up the passing lanes.

Looks like Balbay is still very raw. I assumed he’d be more experienced than your average college freshman considering his experience playing “pro” ball in Turkey.

I'm Just Not That Stoked About This Year's Team

Sorry, I’m really not. I mean, last year’s team was showing fire in their belly’s by now. This team is still searching for an identity. It’s amazing to me to see a team with four returning starters look so lost as a team.

Durant ran the show in 2007 and they looked pretty special until they faced bigs who were pretty fast. Augustine ran the show in 2008 and they looked pretty special…until they faced bigs who were very fast.

But Abrams? Mason? James? Balbay? None of these guys look like the have a clue what it is to run the show. Look, I don’t care how solid they looked today against a weak Oregon team. When they needed to play against another talented team they didn’t. I don’t care about it being a one-point loss, either, because if you watched the game it really wasn’t that close, so don’t bother bringing that up as a reason to be excited about their prospects.

The 2008-09 Horns look like a okay-good team, based on the talent and experience they have in every position, save the most important one, which is point guard/quarterback/leader. UT has very little in that position to get hopeful or excited about this year. Abrams lacks the discipline, enthusiasm, the raw leadership skills to make this team work. With his shot versus passing selection it seems like he’s decided to make 2008-09 a showcase for him to make it in the NBA, his teammates be damned. He and his father’s toying with UT in the whole NBA tryout thing showed me all I need to know about his character – he’s into himself above all else. Balbay – this guy is another example of why European players just all around suck. Remember Marko going #2? They’re all hype and zero return on investment, so why even go there for players? Mason, gosh I hope he can do what Abrams refuses to, but glimpses of something during the course of a game isn’t enough to hang everything on just yet.

They’ll be a good team, get a NCAA bid, but I’d be surprised if they make it out of the round of 32. Unless/until one of these guys steps up and becomes that leader that Abrams is Texas is at best a Top 30 team this year – way over-rated. Probably will finish 4-5 in the Big XII this season. The Notre Dame game exposed UT for the fraud they are. I wish it were different.

it all matters how they finish the season.

and a 1 pt loss ain’t so bad to a #8 team.

Wow... what a ridiculous overreaction

This is textbook doom and gloom right here.

Of course you’re going to look lost when you lose your starting PG. But DJ wasn’t just a PG, he played SG for us too at times. We lost our best passer and playmaker. Did you expect us to make up for it in freaking November?

While the 1 point game was kind of misleading, we were in the game the ENTIRE game. Don’t sit here and tell me that they pulled away or something. That’s what happens when you miss FTs and turn the ball over at the end. Texas deserves credit for hanging in there. I don’t care what the rankings said. Notre Dame should’ve been the favorite in that game specifically because they were much more experienced. They SHOULD have won this game. The optimist should say it’s impressive we were able to hang with such an experienced team.

Abrams is NOT a PG and never should’ve been considered one, regardless of what his dad says. Our PG candidates are going to be Mason, Balbay, and Brown once he joins us in the spring. Was it just me, or did Mason play pretty damn well in the Notre Dame game? Our shot happy SG is what cost us big. Mason played awesome today. WTF @ Balbay!? He’s a freshman coming off an injury and you’ve never even watched him play. STFU with “Balbay is just Euro trash”. Way too premature to judge him. And it was DARKO that was picked #2, not freaking Marko LMAO.

Surprised if we make it to the Sweet 16? Finish 4-5 in the Big 12? How is it that a much more experienced team exposed us as frauds when they won by a point, including a miracle bank shot? Maybe a lack of experience is what they exposed us of… O RLY? Get a freaking clue.

Looks like we have a basketball version of Texas_Fight here.

Lot of upside

The horns are returning 4 starters but 2 of them are playing new positions. Damion has moved from power forward to small forward and Mason has moved from shooting guard/small forward to point guard. The horns not only have to replace the great Augustin at PG but they are doing it with a guy (Mason) who is learning via OJT. Once Mason figures out how to play PG, he is really going to help the other horns score points. The horns are having to move to a more structured offense this year (with the loss of Augustin) and it will take a while before the new offense functions smoothly (but we should see a lot of improvement in this area as the team gets more polished in running it).

This is a team that is going to improve a bunch as the year progresses. Damion and Mason both played much better today than yesterday (and should continue to improve as they get more experienced at their new positions).

Other players who should improve a bunch as they get more experienced are Gary, Dex, Wangmene, Chapman, Ward and Balbay. Right now Dex cannot stay in the game because of fouls but that will be less of a problem in the rough and tumble Big 12 and March Madness. His per minute production has been pretty good and he should keep improving. Gary is becoming one of the most reliable horn players and presents a tough matchup for most power forwards defending him because of his ability to both hit the 15 footer and to drive the lane and finish. Wangmene’s main problem right now is just lack of experience/coaching. He should improve significantly this year as well.

Even senior Abrams can improve just by improving his shot selection.

a little eary to jump that gun in my opinion.

This was the 4th 5th game of the season. There’s a reason they call them preseason tournaments. Every team grows and we have to remember DJ Augustin was a freak. He’s already dropping 30 on nba teams. It takes either a freakish athlete or time to nurture. This team will get better as the season goes on. I would not be surprised at all to see this team in the elite 8 again by years end. Growth takes time. Plus we’ve got some nasty shooters.
