Game Day Open Thread: Texas A&M Aggies at #2 Texas Longhorns
Texas A&M Aggies at Texas Longhorns, Nov 27, 2008 7:00 PM CST
I woke up battling the flu today, so no pregame analysis from me. Or, rather, some very concise analysis: Win, Texas. Win big. As big as you can.
Down with McGee. Down with A&M.
Happy Thanksgiving all... and Hook 'em Horns.

It's easy to remember
the lackluster performances of the Horns against aggy the last couple years, but we’ve not played well against them the last four years. Common sense points to a blowout tonight, but recent history gives me plenty to be concerned with.
I hope we come out with a Mizzou-type effort and bury these jokers quickly, then dance upon their graves until the final gun.
TEEEEEEEEEEEEXXXXXAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAASSSSSSSSSSS!!!!!

Oh yeah....
Happy Thanksgiving!

I know its early...
but I hope DKR doesn’t return to resembling a library tonight. http://myespn.go.com/blogs/big12?tag=Austin%200814
Crowd Concern
Definitely concerned that we are going to have an extremely weak/lame crowd tonight. Hope I’m wrong.
GIG EM!
Hopefully the Ags can pull out the shocker of the year. Most likely though, I’ll be in bed early tonight.
Happy Thanksgiving everyone!
So what do we need to sway the voters?
35-0 by halftime?
The way I see it
we are down by 28 at kickoff. If we want this game to do what we need it to, we have to come out and play like we are about thirty in the hole from the start.
If you're so sure of what it ain't, how about telling us what it am!
there is NO ONE in the stadium, what the fuck? not even half full it looked like from the ESPN broadcast.

You serious?
Man… I’m already regretting going home for Thanksgiving :(.

And while I understand Thanksgiving night on TV gives us more viewers
I wanted it to be on Friday again so I could go back to Austin. It just wasn’t possible this year for me.
Oh, the disappointment of not being there in person to watch the demolition of the Aggies…

Mike Goodson
is the guy that scares me the most, but he’s only gotten 13 carries in the last two games combined. He did get 3 catches for 77 yards against Baylor though.

Goodsons been injured
from what Ive heard. he has a gimpy knee. Hopefully he doesnt have that killer burst.
watch out colt

He could be a very good running back.
Does Palmer just memorize the weekly SID release?
He sucks in a very special way.

line looking like crap
Disciplina Praesidium Civitatis.
Last two drives, GD abandoned what works
I hope Muschamp cans his ass.
Seems like UT
isn’t totally sold out in this game yet. Don’t let the Aggies hang around, you need style points tonight.
Seriously, I'll take the win
reality is we could win this game by 50, and OU will still pass us up if they beat OK State on the road.
by goingforthecorner on Nov 27, 2008 7:44 PM CST up reply actions
I don't think it's that easy... Aggies always bring it for this game.
It’ll take another score or two before they realize the futility.
Yes, I’m knocking on wood.
agreed, texas needs to score more. a 30pt win over aggie won’t suffice. even with a slippery field to blame for poor offensive performance.
by Displaced Longhorn on Nov 27, 2008 7:41 PM CST up reply actions
so far...
not the epic performance we were hoping for. Judging by what we’ve seen so far, this team has no business playing for the MNC
Disciplina Praesidium Civitatis.
Wow.
Are you serious? Are you being ridiculous dude? One “bad quarter” and you are already dismissing your own team? Man you longhorn fans are spoiled.

i was merely commenting on the 1st quarter
Disciplina Praesidium Civitatis.
disagree, i think the field is a huge issue and is seen every time someone makes a quick cut… the fall. you think demarco murray would have made so many quick cuts against TT’s defenders in this situation? no.
by Displaced Longhorn on Nov 27, 2008 7:43 PM CST up reply actions
why? we play methodically
sorry that we don’t run a fast break every play
we’re CLEARLY the better team
A few more scores will zap anything...
the agros have. It will be close to being done about halftime (Please Lord).
We're Texas...and you're NOT
Zzzzzzzzzz
I’m pleased we’re winning, but if I’m a casual observer, I’m not impressed. Why is GD reverting to his OU gameplan circa 2003. 2-yard out-routes and screens? Are they afraid of A&M’s defense?
Come on, lets go deep over the middle, this conservative gameplan isn’t wowing anybody, and we NEED wow points. They had to have know this coming into the game, what is GD thinking????
man the turf looks really wet..
sorry i just started watching
very surprised at how jacked-up it is

That missed FG bodes poorly
Still 7-0 despite domination by UT.
What is up with the field? Does anybody honestly know?
AND mcgee falls…. so hard to move on this field right now.
by Displaced Longhorn on Nov 27, 2008 7:52 PM CST up reply actions
worse than Tech or OSU
because the competition is lesser. Those teams would jump all over our offense tonight.
by BrooklynHorn on Nov 27, 2008 7:53 PM CST up reply actions
The slick field is making skill runners tentative. Not good.
I came in from near Austin. It rained where I was about 5 or so, not for long, enough to get grass wet, but not much really.
Why isn't Lawrenece Kicking?
Its ridiculous how Brown benched Lawrence for only missing two field goals the whole year.
I've always contended
that when Greg Davis calls an uptight, conservative game, it becomes infectious, and the entire team seems to play their assignments uptight. Colt never makes these throws.
The field is awful
worse than GD’s play calling.
thinking the same thing
Disciplina Praesidium Civitatis.
that was intended for the umpire
Disciplina Praesidium Civitatis.
Williams with the tipped punt
now lets take advantage, run!
Nice to see those fresh clean special teams do something.
That’s the kicker here, the special teams.
Why is everyone so impatient?
I expected aTm to play well early.
We’ve made a couple of long drives, just have drilled in the points yet. It’ll come.
I thought we were all in agreement
that this game was less about the outcome, and more about style points. Is anyone really going to plead ignorant to that?
Greg Davis doesn’t have to call such a conservative plan, he’s choosing to do so.
by BrooklynHorn on Nov 27, 2008 7:58 PM CST up reply actions
I estimate
that we have the nation’s attention for maybe the first half, and we’re already inching close to halftime. THis game is as much about impressing voters as anything, and nothing in this game so far would make a decent Sportscenter highlight.
by BrooklynHorn on Nov 27, 2008 7:56 PM CST up reply actions
but that's how most of our games are
we’re a GREAT team
we just play differently
it’s like ucla basketball
WE DON"T PLAY. The players do.
We’re spectators. We can’t force shit.
yep. D is answering
we need better plays on offense.
by burntorangenance on Nov 27, 2008 7:56 PM CST up reply actions
A&M's offense/defense
Is kinda like our’s at Clemson at first glance (first I’ve seen them this year and i don’t follow the Aggies). Great defense capable of holding good teams, but I’d rather eat a plate of hog doo doo than watch their offense try to work.
This field is embarrassing
This is ruining the game right now for both teams. This is ridiculous.
mcgee style suits the rubbish field
Disciplina Praesidium Civitatis.
McGee provides a nice change of pace
Good north-south blast on those two runs.
I wish the offense
played with the same intensity as the defense.
The blitz is getting to our O-line
another sack
by goingforthecorner on Nov 27, 2008 8:00 PM CST reply actions
Actually, that was from the outside
and Colt didn’t have any hot receiver open.
He's a long way from dead.
Considering his history, the games the past two years and McGee and his travails, there is a toughness test going on. Right now, Colt is upright and ahead 14-0. May get much tougher, too.
I'll take that if you are reffering to BON.
So, first, and only, rule is know where you are and who you are interacting with. We give only positive support on this sight. If you can hang with that then we welcome your action. Cool?
One of their few real options to win in this game is to put Colt down.
I don’t think they’d win with that, but tactically speaking they’ll try. I understand that.
COLLINS!
That’s what I am talking er writing about.
OL needs to gel. Sad to say that it has to happen this late in the season.

Our O-line play has been mediocre all year, but right now it’s pretty hard to watch.
the man, the myth, the legend.
it’s not the ferocity needed (unless you’re talking about the oline), it’s sure footedness….

I wouldn't think we would wet it on purposes; we're the faster team.
Not as bad as Ags in ‘63 game in ’63. But odd. Someone listening to Craig Way might hear an explanation; he’ll probably get to it far faster than TV people.
I wish this Trio of Dunces
would call the damn game and stop talking about the Big 12 title game.
Typical ESPN production
Ever watch the Thursday game? They talk about everything BUT the game in front of them. It’s a joke.
I would not mind so much

aTm's season ran out of gas
when Mike Sherman elected to kick a field goal against Tech with the ball inside the Aggie’s 10 at home.
What did Sherman do in Green Bay that convinced the folks in College Station that he can coach?
Lots of 45-35s
Love it. More touchdowns and maintain the solid D for negative aggie yards and I’ll take this.
is it worng
that I loathe the very core of tamu?
i’m feeling no, but..
yeah, no. I’m pretty sure the darkest circle of hell is reserved for core dudes.

This is why the Aggies lose. Just trying to keep it a game, not trying to win. Fine by you guys, though, eh?
Similar call Sherman made against Tech
This is not the NFL.
Sherman told his team, “I have zero confidence in you.”
Giving up 3 points to them in the 1st 2 quarters is not bad
but only scoring 14 is not good. I hope we can get a TD before half time.

Damn, I thought it would have been Shipley. Playing cagey, I was.
And a truly Heisman move to get out and then make the pass.

by Displaced Longhorn on Nov 27, 2008 8:27 PM CST up reply actions
whoa, there...missed the point
What I mean is the fact that he’s such a good athlete, it would be tough. If you had a Harrell or Bradford tonight, with all the pressure, it’d be tough.
wow that was an awesome throw by colt DAMN
by girlslikefootball2 on Nov 27, 2008 8:26 PM CST reply actions
Even great QB have a tough problem throwing that pass.
He looked like Manning throwing that pass (Colts).
Leadership in action.
Not the nice clean passer but an all over the field player, more in the Tebow mold than either Harrell or Bradford. He’s a football player in a way they aren’t.
Not sure the team is making the impression needed but Colt has
Defense looking pretty good too though
Don't worry, won't take long to get it back
by goingforthecorner on Nov 27, 2008 8:30 PM CST up reply actions

I want to see Texas get a pick or Turnover. Dagger!
Don't worry.
You will get the ball back after four plays. Our offense is a joke.
by PrimeTime2012 on Nov 27, 2008 8:30 PM CST up reply actions
Considering the last several A&M games, this is a pretty good outcome.
And the Horns can play much better, on offense anyway. Defense is just going to party.
Proud the defense came to play, only one blemish on the goodson run
need to keep the fire
and then committed sepuku for dishonoring his espn family.
by Displaced Longhorn on Nov 27, 2008 8:41 PM CST up reply actions
at least something about the games
they even do cartoons
this reminds me of the ncaa tourny

We're relied so much on offense this season, but the D is seriously coming around.
That’s one of the best thing that could evolve over the next 14-15 games or so.
while i agree the defense is coming through, the turf is helping them. it’s hurting every offensive play. no one can cut.
by Displaced Longhorn on Nov 27, 2008 8:45 PM CST up reply actions
worried about the aggies progress toward the end of the half.
But the defense has come a long way since FAU
Even if it's aTm, they're doing everything expected.

Timmy Chang, David Klingler, and Colt Brennan
…are all proud of your assertion that better stats should always dictate who gets the Heisman. Congrats on the illustrious company for your boy Bradford!
(For the record, I think Sam is a great candidate. But Colt does more for his team because he has to. There is some talent on Texas, no doubt. But Texas fans would die for someone as talented as Gresham, Murray, etc. on our offense. That’s what makes beating the Sooners even sweeter!)
Add in rushing yards and TDs...
And the fact that Colt is surrounded by less talent, not to mention his insane completion rate.
Congrats on the victory
And such a great one. UT took down a great powerhouse tonight… A top 20… Oh, no wait, that’s Saturday’s game… That’s right… UT was playing A&M… A BOTTOM 20 team…
But, the 49 points scored against A&M, now THAT’S impressive…
But, damn…. didn’t a whole lot of other teams score a lot on A&M too??? Let’s see…
56 OSU
44 KSU
43 TTU
49 ISU (yes, IOWA State)
66 OU
41 Baylor
49 Texas
So…. 7 of the 12 teams A&M played scored 41 or more points. FOUR teams scored 49 or more, including Texas and IOWA STATE. AND, 3 of those 4 highest scoring games were away games for A&M. But the BIGGEST score against them, was on their own home field, by OU…..
Tonight’s game, UT fans. Meant NOTHING. ABSOLUTELY nothing. You beat a truly horrible team. In fact, struggled against them, at times. Now, you can account for that part due to it being a rivalry. But this was a really REALLY bad team. If I’m a voter, what did you do that you weren’t SUPPOSED to have done?? That MOST of the teams that they played, did????
The UT defense was impressive for most of the game, I’ll give you that, but it still falls back on the same thing. A&M was REALLY bad!!! If I lined up a high-school team against UT I’d HOPE they could play good defense on most plays…. THAT’S what it looked like, tonight. NOT like an impressive UT team, but like an inept Aggie team….
If you were hoping that it would give you some points, or that the crowd’s begging and pleading would win sympathy instead of appear desperate, well………… I’m afraid the mission was an utter failure…………
Won't matter a bit
Come Sunday……….
However, 39-33 happens to be the Longhorns death knell……..
Haha
I bet you are proud of yourself for copying and pasting all of this crap from sportsline when you first wrote it. Texas fans called you on your crap there, what makes you think bringing this garbage over here would prove any different?

dont you know sooners cant subtract?
I hear its a disability actually
my first born shall be named vy
Struggled?
Texas held them to 9 points. Fewer than any other team this season. If they’re that bad and Texas “struggled” against them then why didn’t OU shut them out or at the very most hold them to a field goal instead of four touchdowns? Arkansas State even held them to fewer points than OU.
Not to mention...
That our margin of victory was the largest against them all season. Including OU’s victory.
ha ha
About the only thing we struggled with was the crappy field. Perhaps the Aggie Grass Nazis can stay in town and tell us what we did wrong….
Both teams have a great argument for going to KC. I just like ours better. And it’s more than JUST 45-35, but that certainly should play a factor, too.
And when did you get a vote for the Harris or Coaches poll? To think that it failed is presuming that you know what will happen. Here’s a tip- stop worrying about us, and worry about handling your other rival that might beat you this year.
Hey TexasSooner
what you bring here is totally weak and the only reason you can bring it at all is that voters love you. If voters were less subjective you probably wouldn’t be in the position of taunting UT fans on their blogsite with irrelevant numbers. Now, personally I was indeed hoping we would treat the agros like a rag doll for the voter-impressing style numbers that Stoops and Meyer don’t mind running up, but I’m not the coach and MB apparently thought it wasn’t necessary or worth going after. So be it. I don’t like the current system and I hope it changes someday. Today I have to deal with the fact that if OU gets over on UT this year, then we’ll just have to kick the shit out of whoever we play in the Fiesta Bowl. Unfortunately I have to agree with you a bit, as much as the idea revolts me, that all the 45-35 signage in the stands yesterday did make it look a bit desperate and whiney. Another reason not the like the current system. I think UT and OU are both very good teams and I’d almost like to see a rematch take place in Miami (there is a scenario that would play that out), but the only reason not to root for that is because then the SEC honks wouldn’t shut up about how we (Big 12) only play offense and that their defenses would shut us down…etc. One of us needs to go there and beat them down. I just hope it’s not your team. The rematch would have to wait till next October.
Is TexasSooner cross-eyed???
Iowa State dropped 35 on the faggies, not 49, 49 would be how many points the ags scored, and 15 of ISUs points came in the 4th. If your going to come talk to us about how awesome you are, why dont you figure out what the hell your talking about first.

History lesson
1978 Billy Sims fumbled going in for the winning touchdown to give Nebraska a 17-14 upset
However, Nebraska was stunned to find out that its opponent in the Orange Bowl that year would be its nemesis, Oklahoma.
Oklahoma won the game handily, with Nebraska adding a late score to make it look close, 31-24
Herein’ lies the point, oh Longhorns. A win, does not make you the better team.
Uh, actually in this case, it does...
and deep down, you know it.
Um...
That’s the only way to judge which team is better. Have a better criteria? Oh yeah, Team A beat Team B which beat Team C, so Team A is better than Team C even though Team C beat them on a neutral field…
Deep Thoughts, with TexasSooner.
Let’s look at it this way! Texas lost on the last play to Tech, like your Nebraska example, but would likely beat Tech if they played on a neutral field, given the kind of game we played. So the analogy might work for us. But you went scoreless in the 4th quarter against us and lost by 10. Does your analogy work as well there?
Was that first 1978 matchup in Lincoln?

oh ok
So the Sooners loss makes them the better team?
It's an interesting form of logic.
What he’s saying is that because OU lost, they were able to um… you know… play Nebraska in 1978… and Bradford’s numbers are pretty… and sometimes in the past teams go to the Orange bowl… and winning is irrelevant because his team looks sexy in Crimson… and then you know…
He’s basically the Sarah Palin of Sooner fans.
