Football Saturday Open Thread

Last Saturday night as Texas Tech kicked off in Norman, I was fully prepared to root for Oklahoma. And from the moment they scored and I saw Sooners celebrating.... I couldn't go on. I just watched in disgust. The OU win did put Texas in a stronger position than it would have following a Tech win, but the sight of Sooners fans cheering wildly was more than I could take.

No such conundrum this week: Texas fans' interest lie squarely in losses for Texas Tech and/or Oklahoma. So hate away, Longhorns fans. (And give the 'Noles and Tigers some love, while you're at it.)

Separate open thread this evening for Bedlam. This is your game day thread.

Wear a helmet.

Losing hope

Judging by the way the “experts” are saying, and the arguments all over the blog world, I don’t think Texas will jump ou.

I really really really want OSU to win, dont care where we go, as long as OU does not go to the NC or the BIg XII championship.

Hmm… perfect season if only OU would trip up.

Don't give up hope so quickly

With the talking heads this week breaking, it seems, about 80/20 in favor of thinking Texas should get the nod, regardless of what they think will happen, I am positive that a fair segment of voters are up for grabs and could be persuaded to change their mind if OU gives them any excuse to do so at all (i.e. anything less than a blowout victory). I’m not saying it will be enough, but I think it would be closer than people think.

Hoping for FSU upset

Really think that gets us in. Of course UF would then have to beat Bama but they are so overrated right now I think that happens. It seems unlikely that FSU wins based on how well UF is playing but it’s a rivalry game. We know how those go sometimes….

we have hotter babes than OU or Tech. That should count for something, right?

2 Reasons Texas Is Going to Barely Miss It

I am with you on this

Actually, we benefit more from Florida losing to FSU, which will happen, and then beating an undefeated Alabama in the SEC title game.

I love the emergence of this Kansas-Missouri rivalry

This game is pretty crazy. If these teams remain competitive in coming years, this might replace Nebraska-Colorado as the premier rivalry game in the Big XII North.

by BrooklynHorn on Nov 29, 2008 12:13 PM CST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

The Border War has always been strong

Back when both teams really sucked, you could salvage your season with a good old fashion beat down of Kansas (if you were Mizzou).

At Mizzou, 1-10 could be lived with so long as the lone victory came at the expense of Kansas.

Meanwhile Chase Daniel is doing his best to screw Texas

He just fumbled after a 45 yard run. Kansas leading 3-0 late in the first half.

Win by OSU winning

If OSU won, and Baylor lost, then don’t we win? I would prefer to skip the Big 12 title game and go straight to the MNC title game.

Even if OU beat OSU, likely but not assured, they still have to play Mizzou. Big Game Bob has turned up lame plenty of times in Kansas City (see 2004? game against Kansas St.).

by junglerules on Nov 29, 2008 12:23 PM CST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Yes

Tech would go to the Big 12 title game in case of an OSU loss and a Baylor loss. Can the Red Raiders pass us in the BCS though? In other words, can we pull a Nebraska?

by milevin on Nov 29, 2008 12:24 PM CST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I don't think they could jump us

if they lost close to OU then they’d still be in the conversation but even if everyone wins out and they beat Mizzou I don’t think it will be enough.

by seth78 on Nov 29, 2008 12:54 PM CST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

looking horrible

Maybe they are playing as if this game means nothing to them. It’s a rivalry, but they go to the big twelve title game regardless. You could see that Chase fumble coming a mile away.

by junglerules on Nov 29, 2008 12:25 PM CST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Or...

Missouri has choked in nearly every big game they’ve played in. Oklahoma twice last year, and OSU and Texas this year. The only exception is Kansas last year.

by BrooklynHorn on Nov 29, 2008 12:27 PM CST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I agree with you

except that they’ve beaten up on all their North brethren, like KU et al. So, hopefully they right the ship and win. But, there would be some advantages to them losing if we don’t go to the big 12 champ. game.

by junglerules on Nov 29, 2008 12:30 PM CST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

OVERRATED

or maybe they have been horribly overrated all year.

The fact is that Miz hasnt beaten a ranked team all year, their signature win is against a 5-5 illinois team right?

ARG!

I mean Mizzou cuts the lead

by milevin on Nov 29, 2008 12:32 PM CST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Think about it this way

If Mizzou loses today, and OK State finds it within themselves to win, Tech beating Mizzou in the big XII Championship game becomes more of a “should have won anyway” game than it already is, and that helps Texas in the final rankings.

Not controlling your own destiny sucks.

Kansas/Mizzou

really turned up the excitement and status of this game moving it to Arrowhead through 2012. Can anyone think of a stadium between Colorado and Nebraska that would work? Might be geographically challenged to meet midway. Arrowhead works like Dallas for Texas OU.

I just don't think it's that relevant

If you’re looking for a pattern, then I can understand, like pointing out Mike Leach’s inability to beat Texas and OU in the same season. But there’s no pattern to be looked at here; CU did okay against Tech last year but Tech is a lot better now.

I will only root for my favorite team. However, if a win by a hated rival happens to benefit my team, I can be happy with the result. So when OU and OSU play tonight, I will look in on the game with an interest in the outcome, but I will not be rooting for either team.

by milevin on Nov 29, 2008 1:53 PM CST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

No

Margin of victory was removed. SOS remains.

I'm not mad at Schlabach anymore

But as a Georgia alumn, he really can’t cry about “defense” after this. Goodness gracious.

Mizzou ball again

Finally looking like some semblance of a decent team.

by junglerules on Nov 29, 2008 1:56 PM CST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Mizzou needs to take the lead before the fourth

Daniel has no heart, and he’ll cave if the pressure is on late.

true

He’s been anti-clutch all his career, basically.

Kansas has 60 plays to Missouri's 38

That may not bode well at the end of the game. Of course, Missouri has a chance at a long drive here.

Genius DL had Daniel trapped

Then turned around and ran the other way on that litle dumpoff. Bizarre. Did he think that was the latest screen ever called?

need a stop

3 n out or a turnover sends mizzou into scoring drive?

by ibleedburntorange49-9 on Nov 29, 2008 2:01 PM CST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Off topic

App State ran the same fake field goal as Nebraska. Instead of intercepting the overhead toss, the outside defender hand tackled the kicker short of the first down line. South Carolina St. trying to pull a huge upset.

I dunno.

“Which one are you? Left or right?”
and
“Chase Daniel has a micro-penis”
are pretty close.

Which one caused offense HB?

Stalking the Longhorn Ladies, or discussion of TPS (Turtle Penis Syndrome)?

I thought they were funny

I was just pointing out that there is such a thing as off topic on a game day thread, although it doesn’t matter. Nice to know someone all the way across the pond is thinking about my junk, though.

I’m going global, baby.

until the realization that OU likely will win a National Title

by BrooklynHorn on Nov 29, 2008 2:08 PM CST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Unfortunately, if Florida or Bama beats OU

All the SEC lovers will scream “See! We’re better than the Big 12.”

I could take another year of

the SEC sh*t if it means OU does not win the national championship.

lowly ACC

about to go up 2-0 on the SEC so far today. FSU upset would be a HUGE blow to the SEC homers. with Vandy at Wake tonight, it could set up a 4-0 sweep by the ACC. with Arky beating LSU yesterday, both UF and Bama’s SOS is taking a beating.

virginia tech beating virginia plays no role in the texas/ou/tech battle but weakens USC’s bcs standings. just incase it comes down to texas or USC for a bcs bowl bid

Not “Doesn’t matter”. I thought she was asking how much difference it made if Mizzou only loses by a little as opposed to a lot. Obviously we want our best independent victory to look good, and that means Mizzou needs to win.
