Football Saturday Open Thread
Last Saturday night as Texas Tech kicked off in Norman, I was fully prepared to root for Oklahoma. And from the moment they scored and I saw Sooners celebrating.... I couldn't go on. I just watched in disgust. The OU win did put Texas in a stronger position than it would have following a Tech win, but the sight of Sooners fans cheering wildly was more than I could take.
No such conundrum this week: Texas fans' interest lie squarely in losses for Texas Tech and/or Oklahoma. So hate away, Longhorns fans. (And give the 'Noles and Tigers some love, while you're at it.)
Separate open thread this evening for Bedlam. This is your game day thread.
Wear a helmet.

Losing hope
Judging by the way the “experts” are saying, and the arguments all over the blog world, I don’t think Texas will jump ou.
I really really really want OSU to win, dont care where we go, as long as OU does not go to the NC or the BIg XII championship.
Hmm… perfect season if only OU would trip up.
Don't give up hope so quickly
With the talking heads this week breaking, it seems, about 80/20 in favor of thinking Texas should get the nod, regardless of what they think will happen, I am positive that a fair segment of voters are up for grabs and could be persuaded to change their mind if OU gives them any excuse to do so at all (i.e. anything less than a blowout victory). I’m not saying it will be enough, but I think it would be closer than people think.

Hoping for FSU upset
Really think that gets us in. Of course UF would then have to beat Bama but they are so overrated right now I think that happens. It seems unlikely that FSU wins based on how well UF is playing but it’s a rivalry game. We know how those go sometimes….
Shouldn't we be rooting for Georgia Tech too?
Doesn’t a Georgia loss hurt both the Gators and Tide?

2 Reasons Texas Is Going to Barely Miss It
1) Texas Tech sucked too hard against Oklahoma
2) Bob Stoops runs up scores and has no class
Some miracles would be very welcome...
I hope my prayer will get answered——> Florida / Bama will lose today. Miracles do happen and I keep my fingers crossed…
I am with you on this
Actually, we benefit more from Florida losing to FSU, which will happen, and then beating an undefeated Alabama in the SEC title game.

I love the emergence of this Kansas-Missouri rivalry
This game is pretty crazy. If these teams remain competitive in coming years, this might replace Nebraska-Colorado as the premier rivalry game in the Big XII North.
The Border War has always been strong
Back when both teams really sucked, you could salvage your season with a good old fashion beat down of Kansas (if you were Mizzou).
At Mizzou, 1-10 could be lived with so long as the lone victory came at the expense of Kansas.
The neutral field and national prominence
have amped it up a bit.

Snowing/raining, great runs, ints, fumbles, the first quarter has been great.

Kansas pumped early and this is a fine rivalry game.
Mizzou should get on track after a while.
Win by OSU winning
If OSU won, and Baylor lost, then don’t we win? I would prefer to skip the Big 12 title game and go straight to the MNC title game.
Even if OU beat OSU, likely but not assured, they still have to play Mizzou. Big Game Bob has turned up lame plenty of times in Kansas City (see 2004? game against Kansas St.).
nope
Tech has head to head over us in the two way tie that way

Yes
Tech would go to the Big 12 title game in case of an OSU loss and a Baylor loss. Can the Red Raiders pass us in the BCS though? In other words, can we pull a Nebraska?
I don't think they could jump us
if they lost close to OU then they’d still be in the conversation but even if everyone wins out and they beat Mizzou I don’t think it will be enough.
looking horrible
Maybe they are playing as if this game means nothing to them. It’s a rivalry, but they go to the big twelve title game regardless. You could see that Chase fumble coming a mile away.

Mizzou takes the lead
I cannot listen to that unprepared knucklehead who does color on Fox regional though.
Think about it this way
If Mizzou loses today, and OK State finds it within themselves to win, Tech beating Mizzou in the big XII Championship game becomes more of a “should have won anyway” game than it already is, and that helps Texas in the final rankings.
Not controlling your own destiny sucks.
"Stats are for losers, I like winning games."
Kansas/Mizzou
really turned up the excitement and status of this game moving it to Arrowhead through 2012. Can anyone think of a stadium between Colorado and Nebraska that would work? Might be geographically challenged to meet midway. Arrowhead works like Dallas for Texas OU.

It’s sails, btw. And don’t be discouraged. We won; now the pressure is on both of them.
Am I losing it or didn't we beat OU at Dallas. And that's a road win, isn't it?
And the half time announcer just glosses over it. I guess Bob is under the desk.
Texas was supposed to have zero chance against OU
What happened? Oh right. OU lost. But somehow Mizzou is supposed to have a chance against us even though we blew them out earlier this season yet they have no chance versus OU? That guy is a complete idiot.
Nope
Winning at Kansas was a road win. Dallas was not.

Its a lot different than a road win.
Like Elusive said, it’s just a neutral field win. 50% of the fans were yours. Both teams were in strange lockers and facilities. It wasnt a road win. Tech was your only opportunity for a big road win this season.

Rooting
I will only root for my favorite team. However, if a win by a hated rival happens to benefit my team, I can be happy with the result. So when OU and OSU play tonight, I will look in on the game with an interest in the outcome, but I will not be rooting for either team.
Before you criticize someone, walk a mile in their shoes. If they get mad, you're a mile away AND you have their shoes.
I love how Sooner fans have to bring up 65-21

I don’t have a great answer for you. It seems the consensus is that since we have such a low opinion of the voters, we think they’ll vault OU ahead of us so we’d rather have Tech go to the Big 12 title game and take our chances with Missouri.

great football weather
glad we didn’t have to play any “style point” games in it, but man does it make games like this fun to watch.

Come on, Mizzou D
You got some rest after that long drive. Do something.

I always wanted to play a game in the snow.
Got 3 inches of rain, other games in 20s, but no snow. damn.
Im sure its fun as a player
But man does it suck as a fan. Ive been to too many games up here where I froze my a$$ off in the snow.

No kidding
31 yard pass on a 3rd and 11. Nice.

this pretty good Kansas team
is the 7th best in the conference. without looking, i’d take them over the 7th best in any other conference.

Daniel's one fourth quarter comeback
and they wasted it.
Also, it’s freaking SNOWING, Mizzou pass defense. It’s SNOWING.
Only need to scramble around for 8 seconds, just run backwards and slide.
Don’t let them touch the ball, you haven’t covered Massa-whatever all game.
Baylor D
gonna need to win the TO battle or something. they’re just not going to be able to stop Tech’s O.
by littlevisigoth on Nov 29, 2008 2:48 PM CST up reply actions
lotta time left
Mizzou defense will actually have to make a stop.

Haha, mighty Georgia goes down again.
Love it

That was actually a great play by whoever made that catch
didn’t go into the endzone so they could drain some more clock?
But instead they score on the very next play, so not really.
37-33 Mizzou.
What a game. If Tech has to play Mizzou in this weather, Mizzou HAS to be considered the favorite to win.

Mizzou's D-Line needs to pursue,
Once past, they don’t put in the effort to close from the backside of the pocket.
Space for rent.
Come on, Mizzou
Just one play. Just one…

Baylor has a stupid false start.

need to answer
with a TD. can’t get blown out in the 1st quarter.
by littlevisigoth on Nov 29, 2008 2:59 PM CST up reply actions
Crap
stupid false start…
Go for it, Baylor!

Mangino looks like he doesn’t have a clue.
He coached defense at OU right?
Still a Blaine Irby fan

think he had a clue there!

Amazing
TD, Kansas.
Wow, Mizzou just cannot stand up to a big game.
Wow, that had to have been the quickest Mangino has ever moved in his life

that was a huge drop
Disciplina Praesidium Civitatis.
Better than FG, I thought slyly.
I thought they had to throw to the EZ. They didn’t, threw short and kicked. Should have gone deep twice.
at least their defense
certainly does
by littlevisigoth on Nov 29, 2008 3:07 PM CST up reply actions
wow what happened there?
was it blocked?

Mizzou eats dog shit. Kansas gets a decent bowl.
Now NU and MU are tied for Big 12 North.
a wash with ou and tech
Disciplina Praesidium Civitatis.
It helps us and hurts us.
It only helps OU and Tech.

i kinda lke mangino
despite his inane ramblings in ‘04. He’s doing as good a job as can be done in Lawrence.
Disciplina Praesidium Civitatis.
Yes
depending on Mizzou’s mental state.
Their D sucks, but look at Tech’s D in their last road game.
by goingforthecorner on Nov 29, 2008 3:09 PM CST up reply actions
Mental state
They’re gonna be in the psych ward after this game and then they have to play a tough OU, Tech or Texas team in a week. They’re screwed.
But perhaps losing a tough rival game
could anger them and motivate them, not to mention that winning this games gives them a BCS bowl.
Look how we played in the Holiday Bowl after losing to A&M last year.
by goingforthecorner on Nov 29, 2008 3:25 PM CST up reply actions
everything is possible, ou upset mizzou last year, could be some revenge if that ends up being the case
OU was just better than Mizzou
They beat them in the regular season too.
by TheElusiveShadow on Nov 29, 2008 3:09 PM CST up reply actions
ou might score 80 against mizzou if that is the matchup
Disciplina Praesidium Civitatis.
Thanks for nothing, Mizzou
Geez. Bad special teams = losing.
by TheElusiveShadow on Nov 29, 2008 3:11 PM CST reply actions
Could this be one of those upset days?
Remember that week last year where we lost to KSU and everyone else lost too? Or when we lost to KSU in ’06 and we would have jumped into second because of all the other upsets? So far GT over UGA, KU over Mizzou… Baylor needs some of that magic.
What they’ve got going for them is daylight. Tech’s fans are just fifty thousand people in the daylight.
a dogfight
at home against Baylor would certainly help our chances if OSU wins tonight. even if the Bears can’t pull it off.
BAylor Score!!!
Sic ’em Bears!

I wish
I wish we could have played the Tech team we have seen for the last six quarters.
21-14 Baylor at the half.
