Bedlam Second Half Open Thread

The early INT hurt OSU, but other than that, they've played the Sooners to a draw.

Pokes get the ball first in the second half. Let's see a drive worthy of a 40 year old man.

Fiesta

If OU wins out and with Oregon State choking who would we most likely get assuming Fiesta takes Texas?

by seth78 on Nov 29, 2008 8:51 PM CST reply actions

i think the two national title bowls pick first.

meaning, sugar picks first after losing AL/FL if ranked BCS #1, fiesta would get 2nd choice after losing OU/TX/TT.

after that, i don’t know the order.

bleeding orange up in nyc. get a rope.

by cwofford on Nov 29, 2008 8:55 PM CST up reply actions

After replacement picks

Fiesta, then Sugar, then Orange.
I would assume that Ohio State would be more desireable than Utah.

osu needs an x-factor or else

oklahoma has “solved” the osu defense. they were dominated early but really adjusted by resorting to the underneath stuff. steady, efficient, they won’t be as high flying as normal but it’s enough to get 35-40+ points on the board. as well as they’ve played, okie state needs to know they need a lot of points to win this game and play accordingly. unless they get some big plays from dez on special teams or the passing game i don’t think they can get to that number

At least this isn't a blowout

But if it wasn’t for Zac’s stupid interception, this is a tie game or even an OSU lead.

Anyone happy with the result? OU is winning, but it isn’t exactly a grand show they wanted to put on… yet.

by TheElusiveShadow on Nov 29, 2008 8:54 PM CST reply actions

may not be enough

i’m listening to saunders and crew and thinking people like this get to vote.

by zissou on Nov 29, 2008 8:56 PM CST up reply actions

It won’t be Utah, they’re going to Sugar. Texas would play Ohio State of Boise State if Oregon State loses

by silky51 on Nov 29, 2008 8:55 PM CST reply actions

I thinkUtah to the Sugar was based on an assumption that the Fiesta would take USC

If the Fiesta’s choice for a Texas opponent is Utah or OSU, I think they would take Utah. Remember that OSU has been to the Fiesta (or the BCS Championship Game in Glendale) four of the last six years.

by Hopkins Horn on Nov 29, 2008 8:58 PM CST up reply actions

And that point differential crap was stupid

Don’t you think all three teams would have ballooned many of their scores if they knew that was a tiebreaker? We, for starters, would have definitely scored more against Kansas and A&M. I’m sure OU and Tech had several games where they could have ran it up. It’s a stupid point to put in right now.

i agree, stupid idea. let’s run up the score every week, just in case. plain wrong.

by zissou on Nov 29, 2008 8:57 PM CST up reply actions

Exactly

It’s one thing to say “Team X” generally looked better than “Team Y” against common opponents.

But you can’t retroactively apply a specific point differential standard on a season when no coach was playing for that standard.

And on a go-forward basis, doesn’t that standard reward the team with the great offense rather than the team with the great defense just about every time?

by Hopkins Horn on Nov 29, 2008 9:00 PM CST up reply actions

So IF we end up in Fiesta, would you rather want Ohio State or Boise St?? Those will be the only 2 options.

by silky51 on Nov 29, 2008 8:57 PM CST reply actions

We gain nothing by playing either one...

I want USC if Oregon St can pull it out. Beating USC gives us a shot at a split national championship. Anyone agree/disagree?

by HornsFaninCalifornia on Nov 29, 2008 9:00 PM CST up reply actions

AP National Championship

AP doesn’t count for the BCS, but the AP voters don’t have to vote with the BCS either. They can vote for us just to screw the BCS as well.

by HornsFaninCalifornia on Nov 29, 2008 9:05 PM CST up reply actions

ONLY if

we’re ahead of OU in the AP tomorrow, but not in the BCS.

I posted about this in another thread. DO NOT root for this scenario, since the only way it can come true would require us to root for OU in the BCS Championship game, hoping that OU’s doing so doesn’t swing AP voters their way.

That would suck.

by Hopkins Horn on Nov 29, 2008 9:03 PM CST up reply actions

ah, good point.

would USC be an at-large in that scenario? i highly doubt the fiesta would be able to swing picking two of the hottest at-large teams to fill their bowl. somebody else is bound to snatch one of us if the other is picked, imho.

bleeding orange up in nyc. get a rope.

by cwofford on Nov 29, 2008 9:09 PM CST up reply actions

I'd rather have Ohio State

Even though Ohio State isn’t that grand this year, at least there is some benefit to playing them. Against Boise, it’s a no-win situation: If we don’t obliterate them, then we’re overrated. If they play us close or if they beat us like they did the Sooners, then everyone will talk about how the mid-major schools should go to the national title game. Blah blah blah…

by TheElusiveShadow on Nov 29, 2008 8:59 PM CST reply actions

And if we DO kill them

Then everyone will dismiss it: “Well, that was just Boise State.”

by TheElusiveShadow on Nov 29, 2008 9:01 PM CST up reply actions

We'd still have a shot at Split Championship if.....

OU plays Florida in the BCS championship. Not sure if AP voters would spring for us though if we had to play Ohio St or Boise St in the Fiesta. If Oregon State would rally to win, then we’d get USC and a win there could do the trick for a Split Championship

by silky51 on Nov 29, 2008 9:02 PM CST reply actions

What does this mean?

PB or anyone else,
Cincinnati won today and Mizzou lost. I am hoping for a close OU win and specifically Bradford doing nothing special in the win. However, what does the win mean to us. A kansas win helps us just as much as it helps OU doesnt it? Do we have a chance in the computers because to me it seems our only hope shifts to the human voters. Man I am worried. Any thoughts. Please someone comment…I dont have any finger nails or skin left…………………………..

We’re getting WAAAAY too far ahead of ourselves here talking about Fiesta opponents. The game we’re watching is close, and OSU can still win, or OU can win unimpressively enough that we’re #2 tomorroe.

what a shitty Rose Bowl...

USC will win another by 45 against an overmatched Big 10 team. Even USC wanted to go to the Fiesta (per the LA Times) so that they would have a chance at a split title against Texas/OU.

Only by voters suddenly jumping them over other one-loss teams

And if voters haven’t done so already, they won’t suddenly decide next week that USC is better than Texas or OU. I don’t believe in the existence of the Vast USC Media Conspiracy. If it existed, USC would be top 3 right now.

They would be

by seth78 on Nov 29, 2008 9:12 PM CST up reply actions

This isn't looking good

Oregon is up by 20 in the 4th quarter. USC is now the Pac 10 champ. Get ready to start hearing about how USC belongs in the MNC game.

Even with an Ok State victory, this hurts our shot of making it to the MNC game.

Let’s say Mizzou beats Tech: All the country will say you can’t send Texas to the MNC game since they didn’t even win their own conference. USC must go over Texas. I bet the BCS voters vote USC ahead of us in this scenario.

I know I am getting way ahead of myself but the Oregon State loss really hurts us.

by TheElusiveShadow on Nov 29, 2008 9:11 PM CST up reply actions

and with Mizzou losing

it doesn’t really matter how the humans vote because the computers should favor OU just enough to bump OU over us. The only thing that helps us is OSU winning.

Well, this one was in doubt up until 8 minutes in the fourth and OSU scored 41 points. How is this not what we wanted? It wasn’t as beautiful as Tech sucking it up against Baylor, but this was a lot closer to what we needed than not. A 65-21 thrashing would have cemented a spot for OU. We can still be optimistic.

by the1austin on Nov 29, 2008 10:48 PM CST up reply actions

You're putting it in the Buckner position.

Gideon wasn’t in on the winning play. It’s not like Texas didn’t have opportunities to win the game on either side of the ball. It’s the team that took the hit and playing youth is a risk this team took: you don’t blame the players, you blame the coach, for they were willing to take the risk because this team needed the rewards. Gideon’s best play has served us well and doing this undercuts that respect for his overall play.

Bradford deserves no shot at the Heisman. When you are surrounded by NFL talent, you are not the MVP. Bradford just throws shit up and hopes his guys get to it (as evidenced by the MANY tipped balls). The only MVP in the Heisman race is Colt McCoy.

Lou Holtz...

wants Texas and OU to be in the BIg 12 CG to decide it on the filed (leave Mizzou at home).

Guess what it’s been decided on the field already.

He says they are different teams today, comapred to then.

Yes, and they will be different next week, and the week after, but we don’t replay every game every week.

45-35 stands above all.

by drycreek on Nov 29, 2008 11:25 PM CST reply actions

Using his logic

Do we just dismiss the Tech game then? After all, everyone will agree that Texas is a VERY different team than what we showed that night…

Furthermore, it’s not like OU played awful that game. Bradford tossed five touchdowns, for crying out loud. But we pummeled their run game and we carved up their weak defense and weak special teams.

Not going to happen. The Big 12 and SEC champion will settle it on the field.

Maybe, maybe if USC had a better offense (and not struggled with some crappy Pac 10 teams) there would have been enough media pressure to create another MNC game in the Fiesta (especially if Texas got in). I think USC going to the Rose Bowl kills any chance of a split national title. Texas beating Utah, or OU beating Utah, or USC beating Penn State won’t do it.

I’d vote for Texas because – I want to keep my lame system intact. So I can be a self-important “BCS” voter. Head to head is a hell of an argument. It’s the playoff argument. If that’s not honored, I may be at risk of losing my status as a “BCS” voter, which I like. I like very much my current self-importance, and these Longhorns could make us look like idiots if we don’t put them through, just when we have a new President dogging my system, my Harris vote, my BCS self importance vote.

Random contrarian thoughts on a sleepless night....

1. Holtz and May are both selling something they don’t believe because producers tell them to. May is trying to make up for 2005 when he spent a month declaring USC the greatest ever – so ESPN lets him take the “pro Texas” view. That means Holtz takes the other side….they are entertainers, not journalists. (BTW, Mark, how many Heisman winners does it take to beat Vince Young?)

2. USC may be the team really getting screwed this year (I hate to say it). But, I’ve seen them a few times this year and that defense is unreal. Yes, they lost a game to a team with four losses – but they lost on the road at night and nearly won to a team that will end up tied with them for first in the conference. Sounds a little familiar. Not that I’m losing sleep over their bad luck…..

3. How about credit for non-conference scheduling? Three years ago when we set this schedule (after Utah backed out thinking they didn’t need 2 for 1 anymore) would you have taken Texas’ non-con with UTEP on the rise (and on the road) and Arkansas or OU’s with Cincy and TCU? We scheduled more difficult, our partners didn’t live up to the agreement!

dude,

25 seconds left, first down, on the 20-something. how many timeouts did osu have, infinity? give me a break. he was running up the score so he could go to the camera and say “see? we beat osu by 20!” which he immediately did. in that situation, a classy coach goes into the v formation.

by iamjackburton on Nov 30, 2008 11:06 AM CST up reply actions

doable?

i seem to have read somewhere that it’s DOABLE for ut to stay ahead of ou if mack, who has a vote in the coach’s poll, to leave ou off the ballot completely. i mean, totally shaft them. and if he could get one or two other coaches with votes to do likewise. it would be unethical of course, but hey, this is ou we’re talking about. screw’em. am i wrong here?

by iamjackburton on Nov 30, 2008 1:10 AM CST reply actions

I read it too

I don’t think Mack does it. If OU jumps us do you think the media questions it? No, they’ll figure “OU beat Ok State on the road by 20, Texas beat them at home by 4 so the voters went with OU despite the head to head.” But if Texas stays ahead of OU it will most likely end with blaming Mack for it even if the voters wake up and think “You know this is a really good OU offense and OSU couldn’t stop them. Actually the only team that could was Texas. I’ll change my vote and go with UT instead.”

It comes down to Mack’s character. He will politic as much as he can but at the end of the day he always says the same thing “We will go wherever they send us.” Mack Brown is no Bob Stoops and I thank God for that.

by seth78 on Nov 30, 2008 1:32 AM CST up reply actions

UT could and DID stop them....

When it was the OU 1.0

But after the Kansas game, OU figured it out, and it’s been OU 2.0

NOT the same team

At this point, I wouldn’t put it past Mack to do such a thing, since he’s already lost the respect of most people for his politicking. Bob answered a question after the Tech game, and refused to go on about it. Let the chips fall where they may. How Mack has gone onto every show possible and whored himself out to beg and plead for votes instead of just letting the teams’ play be the determinant has been pretty despicable.

Before Thursday, I’d have rooted for Mack and UT if they were to get the nod ahead of OU. And, not because of the way the TEAM played, but because of the fans and Mack’s attitude, no way that happens now….

TexasSooner,

In your own words, 45-35, is letting the teams play be determinant. There should not be any talk about voters. The teams have played and determined.

Why did your beloved Sooners WAIT till after Texas polished them into the ground to show up 2.0? Texas doesn’t need motivation, BlowU does. We deserve it because we beat you simply stated.

I can't wrap my head

around these facts and how they are being totally disregarded… 1) OU was #1 in the nation on oct. 11th, lost by 10 and at that time the voters thought so much of UT that we jumped from 5th to 1st, and OU only dropped to #4. Since then we’ve held all mutual oppenents to less points than OU, excluding TTU. 2) I think if we had a week off before TTU it would have been a different story. Instead, our schedule was rearranged by a hurricane, and we played 4 top 11 teams in consecutive weeks. 3) This year marked the first time the underdog won the RRS when both teams were ranked, meaning, we were supposed to lose and came out on top. For all of Stoop’s glory, he’s never upset Mack…also, Our SOS got a boost with Rice & Arkansas winning while UF’s biggest wins this year are to a 4 loss LSU team and a 3 loss Georgia squad. They both lost this weekend, does that also favor OU?

by jrod23mc on Nov 30, 2008 2:40 AM CST reply actions

but....

our SOS took a hit when CU and Mizzou couldn’t finish the deal against their opponents. Also, FAU helped us out with a big win while UTEP got destroyed. All in all, the weekend was a wash in terms of hoping for massive computer help.

by junglerules on Nov 30, 2008 8:34 AM CST up reply actions

re: Florida

If you want to look at their computer help, they really had a rough weekend. Miami, Vandy, UGA, LSU, South Carolina, all lost. Had a couple teams on their schedule win, but it seems like they took some hits overall.

by junglerules on Nov 30, 2008 8:37 AM CST up reply actions

so, i know this is pretty much a foregone conclusion...

…since Florida is so close to us in the BCS, but are they guaranteed to jump us if they beat Alabama? The computers don’t love Florida. I just wonder if somehow the computers held on and we were still somehow in the top 2.
