11-1
I have officially jumped off the college football bandwagon after this season. I was starting to love college football waaaaay more than the NFL, but then a season like this happened and I don't even understand how people can honestly justify championships in college. When Texas won in 2005, it was uncontested and obvious...so it worked out. 2005 happened to be one of the only uncontested championships ever in college football. The thing that bothers me is that there doesn't seem to be any motivation from people that matter trying to fix college football. I know they don't have any motivation because they would lose a few dollars making a college football championship more efficient. I hope that a few people would be willing to lose a few dollars in order to keep the integrity and purity of the game alive.
The BCS system is so pitiful that players are leaving early to the NFL just because the system is such garbage.
I am so proud of this Texas football team, and I hope the BCS doesn't screw them. I'm almost 100% sure that ou will get to play in the Big 12 Championship game even though TEXAS BEAT THEM BY 10 POINTS ON A NEUTRAL FIELD. I know the obvious facts don't matter when it comes to the BCS, but this is the first time I remember Texas really getting screwed by the system. It hurts.

There's a reason we call it the "MNC"
Some years, it’s generally accepted who the champion is. However, in most years, there is controversy. Hence the wry label of “mythical.”

I've been thinking alot about this
The problem with a top 8 playoff is that preseason rankings are going to almost completely determine who gets into that playoff. ( ie the #1 preseason team can lose and still make the playoffs while the #6 preseason team cant )
whatever the system, somebody is going to get screwed, at least with the current system it makes for a wild and crazy regular season AND all you have to do is win your games and you are in
There have been very few times when an undefeated team from a legit conference has been left out of the natl championship talk
I mean this situation sucks for us right now, but we had no business spotting Tech 19 points in Lubbock

In all reality though..
the tiebreaker is between Texas and ou. Texas beat ou by 10 points on a neutral field. I agree Texas shouldn’t have lost agianst tt, but I think its a better loss (if possible) than a 10 point loss agianst Texas on a neutral field (ou).

NFL isn't much better
Does anyone really think last year’s Giants were better than the Patriots? The BCS does a better job of rewarding teams for their regular season performance than a large playoff does.
by jw4425 on Nov 29, 2008 11:33 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
well no, but
they beat the Patriots, Cowboy, etc. in the playoffs.. Which is a big difference considering ou LOST to Texas. I know the Giants loss to the Cowboys and the Patriots during the regular season, but atleast its settled on the field. College football insists the regular season acts as a playoff in college, yet ou is more than likely going instead of a Texas team that beat them!? C’mon

The obvious analogy is that...
In the NFL, it could be a team like Missouri, or say Kansas, that gets hot at the end of the season despite losing a few earlier in the season and wins it all, like the Giants. Is a system that allow for a team that loses several games in the regular season a shot at winning it all more fair than one that keeps Texas from playing for it all when they didn’t win all of their regular season games? I agree we should be going to Miami, but the truth is, all we had to do was beat Tech and we’d be there.

ou should be saying the same thing..
all they had to do is beat Texas and they would be in Miami…but they didn’t. It’s between Texas and ou, and Texas beat ou.

That's true...
But you’re missing the point.
by jw4425 on Nov 30, 2008 10:23 AM CST up reply actions 0 recs
yes but...
the Giants lost to the Cowboys TWICE in the regular season. Sure you have to show up in the playoffs and play when it counts, but quite easier to beat a good team 1 in 3 than 3 in 3 wouldnt you say?

Thank you
The worst college Champion of all time, quite literally, is still far far better than last year’s Giants, or the Steelers a few years back, or 85% of college basketball champions.

The Giants
were obviously pretty good considering they are the best team again this year!

They lost 6 games last year...
And certainly aren’t better than the Titans.

uh...
I’m a Titans fan, but do you think the Giants would’ve lost the Jets like that?

You'll read this, and say "Man, that Stos is a real Dick"
The reason you are jumping off the “college football bandwagon” is because you jumped on the “college football bandwagon.” It’s not a bandwagon, it’s passion. You’re either an NFL guy or a college guy. If you’re predominantly an NFL guy, I hate to say it, but your opinion matters very little to a college football fan.
also
"The BCS system is so pitiful that players are leaving early to the NFL just because the system is such garbage. "
No player is leaving early because of the garbage that is the BCS. They leave early to make millions of dollars. I guarantee that the BCS does not factor in to that decision at all.
I know, this post is kind of dick style, but that’s the way it is. Next week Bama and Florida will meet in the college football semi finals. We lost to Texas Tech in the early rounds, and have worked our way up through the loser’s bracket. That’s all fine and dandy, but if we don’t want to deal with the bullshit, we need to win all of our games. If someone makes it to the final game, we can only blame ourselves…or Blake Gideon.
by thestos on Nov 29, 2008 11:43 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
You can't blame Gideon
We played like complete ass in the first half against Tech. It’s not the kid’s fault that Texas didn’t step up. Yeah him dropping that pick is painful but plenty of players make a lot of bonehead plays like stupid penalties. One man’s one mistake does not equal thirty minutes of poor playing by everyone.

amen
you don’t want controversy? win all your games. that’s the only way to avoid this mess.

Yes, and then three teams all win out and we have a mess.
Ask Utah if they’re being considered for the MNC.
Winning all your games guarantees you NOTHING.

Ask Utah what pre-season games they scheduled to earn the respect of pollsters.

Utah beat Oregon State
The same Oregon State that beat USC. That should be somewhat impressive, no?

Florida lost...
and somehow still made it to the “semifinal”. So no, the system does not work. We lost, but there’s no semifinal for three Big 12 South teams that all have the same record, plus the two or three other teams at 11-1.
by drycreek on Nov 30, 2008 12:02 AM CST up reply actions 0 recs
your wrong
players do leave college early because the system is garbage. My opinion is just as important as yours or anybody’s.
If Texas worked their way through the losers bracket, then so did ou and Florida. So, what makes either of them better considering Florida lost to Ole’ Miss and ou lost to TEXAS?
I am a fan of FOOTBALL. I’m not either an NFL guy or college guy. I love the game in general, and the BCS isn’t good for football.

So...
If kids are leaving for the NFL because of the BCS, then that implies that they didn’t leave early in the past because the system was better. Which is simply wrong.
Present one shred of evidence that kids leave early because of the BCS. A quote, some meaningless statistics, something.

Getting Screwed Before
We got screwed in 2003 because OU lost to K-State in the championship game and because the BCS only allows two teams from each conference we had to settle for the holiday bowl instead. (We did lose but we were in place to go to a BCS game before)
by 10isgod on Nov 30, 2008 12:10 AM CST reply actions 0 recs
That and I'd favor...
promoting a few bowls into new BCS bowls. Maybe one for the smaller conferences and have another for the weaker conference champs that are currently floating around 20-25 or worse yet still can lock in a BCS bowl even with having a barely above average season because their conference(s) are weak this year. I hate that you can schedule tough teams, play hard as hell in a strong conference yet you end up being penalized for it when other teams that will never see the light of day in the top 10 are beating weak teams but are rewarded with your spot and are on the outside looking in.

The Stos didn't say he liked the BCS or that it was perfect...
…just that we shouldn’t complain.
Utah and Boise St. won all of there games, they can complain. If there were 3 undefeateds, they could complain. We can’t, we lost. No one is getting hosed except undefeateds.
As for drycreek’s argument…I am just saying we shouldn’t complain. Florida got lucky, and got to play against Bama late.

Oh, and the Gideon thing was not serious
I like the guy. I threw that in at the last of my first post because I had just seen the replay again somewhere and it hurts so much to see it fall through his arms. Hell, you could just as easily blame Jordan for dropping a sure TD early in the game. I don’t blame anyone in particular for the loss.

I want a playoff,
but I am absolutely certain they would screw that up as well.
How, you ask? Well by giving us an 8 team playoff, but giving the 6 BCS conference winners an automatic bid.
In that case this year you would have teams like Cincinnati and East Carolina ranked in the high teens and twenties taking 2 places away from the top 8. Also, a surprise conference championship game winner, ala Mizzou w/3 losses, would take another spot.
They would also put in the conference limit of 2 which would still screw the likes of Tech this year.
Also, I’m sure they would put in a clause that says something to the effect that if Notre Dame doesn’t get swallowed up by the earth during their season (no matter the record) they are automatically given a playoff spot.
by tdwalsh on Nov 30, 2008 1:08 AM CST reply actions 0 recs
Top 8 ranked at the end of the regular season
is probably the best way to go. Teams are still going to get screwed over but really they should have played harder teams and won their games. We want the best in college football not a collection of conference champs when some conferences are extremely weak and don’t even have a conference championship game to decide the best.
by seth78 on Nov 30, 2008 2:01 AM CST up reply actions 0 recs
East Carolina
is in Conference USA…not a BCS conference…but I do agree that “they” would find a way to mess it up…

What is the point of this game if ou goes instead of Texas?
by Longhorns84 on Nov 30, 2008 10:18 AM CST reply actions 0 recs
My thoughts exactly...
What’s the point of it anymore?
We beat them, we have the same record, they outrank us. Wait, What?
