Fulmer out

With Fulmer done at the end of the season with Tennessee, who will replace him?

If I were Tennessee,  I would absolutely covet Mike Leach.  He's had offensive success in the SEC before at Kentucky.  Possible recruiting inroads into Texas.  And he has never been more highly regarded than he is this year.

The bigger question is whether he would leave Lubbock.  With Harrell and Crabtree gone after this year, this would be the perfect time to do it, I think.

As a Tech Alum....

We’re not letting go of Leach. Tech will pay him whatever he wants after the season is over. If I were a Longhorn, I would want to keep Muschamp too. He’s pretty badass.

That's the question, though

It’s all up to Leach, isn’t it? If Tennessee wanted him, they could match whatever Tech was willing to pay. It really depends on whether he wants to move up or stay in Lubbock in the Big 12 South.

I’ve got to be honest, though, I definitely wouldn’t mind seeing him leave for the SEC.

even a tech fan has to agree

At some point, there is a level of $ that Tech cannot match. That program just doesn’t create the amount of revenue that the top state schools can create particularly with stadium size, club seating, TV, and merchandise. If Leach were ever in it for the dough this would be the year for him to cash it in. I just think he’s crazy enough to say %$@# the money, I’m staying.

Yep

I think money is the big wildcard for all coaches. That, and the need to succeed on a bigger and grander scale. I doubt he’d be a good personality fit for the scene they have in Knoxville, though. The thing is, he does have SEC ties from his short stay at Kentucky.

My bigger concern is the Clemson opening. Same neck of the woods, weaker conference. He wouldn’t need to be the baddest guy in the land to win a conference championship and play in the BCS like he does at Tech. I mean, seriously. Facing off against UT and OU just to win the division every year?! Wow…you have to literally be a top 5 program to win the division here. That has to weigh on him from time to time. Plus, we lose a lot of key contributors next season (Harrell, Crabtree probably, Charbonnet, Woods, a big chunk of body on the offensive line, etc). If he was ever going to bolt, this would be the year.

I would expect that David Cutliffe plays heavily into the mix at Tennessee

I doubt he’ll take it after one year at Duke, but I’d be surprised if he wasn’t offered the job.

I agree

I just don’t understand why SEC schools are generally so incestuous when it comes to coaching hires. Look at the class of the league for the last few years…Florida and LSU, with two coaches in Urban Meyer and Les Miles who came from other conferences.

Even Nick Saban originally came from an outside conference

Ole Miss

They screwed the pooch on that decision with Cutcliffe.

A lot of schools.....

Will want Leach and Muschamp. I hope that both stay. Muschamp Vs. Leach is a battle I wanna see more of! (Or do I?!) Yeeessshhh!

Muschamp's gone

I can see Leach staying more than Muschamp. There’s no way you can keep a coordinator who will have gobs of money and a head coaching job thrown at him. Especially if that program is of the caliber of Tennessee or Auburn (if Tuberville is gone, too) or even Washington or Clemson.

Muschamp

He scares me. He just does. There, I said it.

Call me crazy

but I just don’t see Muschamp leaving this year! After next season most likely.

Not crazy

Just wishful thinking. Especially with the number of high profile jobs that will be open. And the fact that almost all of them will be in the south.

Mike Leach

Sincerely loves Lubbock. Just like Bob Knight. I think they like how much control the program gives them, to run it their way. I think Leach is crazy enough to stay. BMG is right that other schools have more$$, and it’s up to Leach, but I just don’t see him leaving. Gerald Myers has made it very clear he wants to give Leach an extension, so we’ll see. We at Tech all really love Leach though.

I think Muschamp would leave before Leach

I don’t think Leach’s kind of crazy would go over well in the deep south.

Why is the Washington job considered to be high profile? I would think Texas Tech is now a higher profile job than Washington with the current status of the Big 12 in relation to the Pac 10.

Crabtree Draft Eligible?

Correct me if I’m wrong, but Crabtree was a true freshman last year and would therefore not be eligible to go pro. He is old for his year (21 as a sophomore), but if I recall the NFL eligibility is 3 years in college. Does anyone have a difinitive answer on this?

by BMG on Nov 3, 2008 1:48 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

Yeah, he redshirted 2006. I think he had some eligibility problems straight out of high school or something (he went to school in Dallas ISD so that probably explains it), so he didn’t get to play right off the bat. Plus, he was a quarterback in high school, so he was learning a new position that first year. I just remember hearing stories when he was on the scout team of how much raw ability he had and he was the star of Thursday night football. At the time, Tech had plenty of other receivers in Jarrett Hicks, Robert Johnson, Amendola, and Joel Filani. Little did they know what kind of an impact he would have, though.

His eligibility

It stemmed from an NCAA clearinghouse issue, not with test scores or grades. Apparently, as I understand it, the clearinghouse paperwork wasn’t filed in time for him to participate in games that year. Could be wrong, though. We, and all of college football, are gonna miss that guy. He’s our VY.
