What?!
He should be a retard to do that! It’s almost a step down from TCU to KSU. He can get much higher profile jobs.

He would have opportunities as a coach in the Big 12 that he doesn’t have at TCU. You mentioned that TCU is ranked higher this year than K-State has been since either 2003 or 2004, so I’ll ask you when TCU has had a run of success comparable to what K-State had under Snyder? He can have a great season at TCU, going 11-1, and what does it get him? If he’s lucky, he sneaks into a BCS bowl. If he doesn’t get into a BCS bowl, he’s probably playing in the Liberty Bowl If he goes 11-1 in the Big 12, he’s almost certainly playing in the Big 12 title game, where a win could possibly send him to the national title game.
Now, clearly it’s much more difficult to go 11-1 in the Big 12 than it is in the MWC, but even if he goes, say, 9-3 in the Big 12, he’s still going to better bowl games than he would at TCU (Cotton, Holiday, Alamo, for example).
I don’t know what TCU’s athletic department budget is because they’re a private school and don’t have to disclose their numbers, but as a general rule Big 12 schools have a lot more revenue than non-BCS schools. K-State is far from a financial powerhouse in the Big 12, but my guess would be they have more revenue than TCU. Even in this disastrous year, K-State is averaging 45,323 fans per home game. TCU is having a great season and it’s averaging 29,902 fans per home game. Fifteen-thousand tickets per game is a big difference.

I agree that TCU is better than K-State on the field right now, of course, but in the long run...
…K-State is where Gary Patterson comes from
…K-State would have to give him a bump in salary (He makes just under $1 million now at TCU, and Prince was getting just over $1 million for his package at KSU…so if they are serious enough about to program to fire him so soon into his tenure, you’d hope they’d be smart enough to offer Gary at least $1.7 long-term)
…K-State can throw more resources and support at the program itself (their enrollment is almost 30,000 compared to TCU’s 9,000)
…K-State is in a much better conference, which helps with recruiting, not having to go undefeated to slip into a BCS game, etc.
…football is the only game in town in Manhattan this time of year, compared to TCU, which competes for attention in the area with SMU, the alumni from the Big 12 who live in DFW concerned with their own teams, and the Cowboys…
Now, granted, I do have to point out two things:
TCU’s endowment is over $1 billion, while K-State’s is only in the $350 million range. TCU is doing a good job with Amon G. Carter stadium and getting into the facilities war more, but at the end of the day the sports culture is very different at the schools. That counts for a lot.
Gary Patterson, with the job he’s done at TCU, could get a better job than Kansas State. (No offense, Wildcat fans). But, I just don’t know if they come knocking with the check book out for a long term contract needed to reboot a program that he’s going to say no, given everything above. Personally, I’d love to see him stay at TCU. He’s done great for them, and it would be dope-on-a-rope to have both TCU and SMU when June gets a few classes in being potential BCS busters on each end of the Metroplex!

If Fran is hired, most KSU fans will get the shovels...
and help bury what’s left of the program.

Dan Hawkins vs. Ron Prince
Let’s take a second and compare the two Big 12 North coaches who are both in their third seasons.
1. Overall Record
Prince: 16-18
Hawkins: 12-21
2. Big 12 Record
Prince: 8-13
Hawkins: 7-14
3. Bowl Games
Prince: 0-1 (Loss in ’06 Texas Bowl)
Hawkins: 0-1 (Loss in ’07 Independence Bowl)
Signature Wins: Prince beat Texas twice, Hawkins beat OU one time and West Virginia this season.
These guys are mirror images of each other.
Yet, Prince got fired midway through his third season and Hawkins just signed an extension to keep him at Boulder through 2012.
I can’t help but think that Ron Prince deserved one more season to turn things around. I’m not saying that Hawkins deserved an extension either, but its interesting to compare the way these two coaches have been treated by their respective institutions when they have both performed at eerily similar levels over the last three seasons.

The real key
Who did they follow?
Prince – Bill Snyder (66% win / 58% conference), I’m not up on my Kstate history, but Ill just go ahead and assume he was the greatest coach in the schools history seeing how the program had averaged 3.2 wins a year leading up to him, and 8 wins under him. In addition KSU had been to one bowl game before (1982) and won their conference only once before (1934). Snyder won the big 12 once, won or tied the north 4 times, and went to 11 bowl games (6-5).
Hawkins – Gary Barnett (56% win/ 61% conference)… well Ill go ahead and just quote Wikipedia.
In 1999, Barnett left Northwestern after eight seasons to become the 22nd head coach of Colorado. His career at Colorado was generally successful; however, he was disgraced and his reputation tarnished by a recruiting scandal, insensitive off-field remarks and failure to maintain the on-field success of his predecessors. Colorado was alleged to have enticed recruits to come to Colorado with sex and alcohol during recruiting visits causing the school to self-impose harsher recruiting rules than any other Division I-A school. That scandal, coupled with Barnett’s dismissive comments about former placekicker Katie Hnida, who alleged that she had been raped by a teammate, led to Barnett’s temporary suspension in 2004 during the off-season. Barnett was reinstated before the start of the 2004 season, and went on to coach the team to an 8–5 record, earning Big 12 Coach of the Year honors along the way. Barnett is more commonly known for these two events than his coaching performance.
Barnett continued as coach in 2005, leading the Buffaloes to a 7–2 start. However, on December 9, 2005, following consecutive losses to Iowa State and Nebraska in the Buffaloes’ last two regular-season games, and a 70–3 blowout by the eventual national champion Texas Longhorns in the Big 12 championship game, Barnett’s contract was bought out in a $3 million settlement. Colorado then went on to play in the Champs Sports Bowl losing to Clemson. The loss is officially credited to Barnett, even though he was no longer with Colorado.
Colorado was the Big 12 North Champion 4 of the 7 years under Barnett, and Big 12 Champion one of those years (2001). Colorado was also ranked #2 in the nation and part of a controversy with the BCS Poll in the 2001 season when the Nebraska Cornhuskers were selected ahead of Colorado for the National Championship game, even though Colorado had just beat Nebraska 62–36.
In June 2007, the Buffaloes were placed under probation for two years and fined $100,000 for undercharging 133 student-athletes for meals over a six year span (2000–01 to 2005–06 encompassing Barnett’s tenure at Colorado) resulting in the major infraction.2 The football program, with 86 of the 133 student-athletes involved, also lost one scholarship for the next three seasons.2
Hawkins may not be winning, but hes as solid a guy and straight shooter as it comes, which is something Colorado desperately needed following Barnett. Not to mention he managed to pull in a recruit as highly touted as our boy Scott. Thats probably why get gets a year or two more than Prince. Also CU’s injuries this year to the O-line are almost comical, well for us, for CU its just sad.

Snyder didn't exactly leave the cupboard full of elite talent either.
His recruiting had dropped off considerably in his final two seasons at KSU. Prince was only given 2 and half years there. He wasn’completely incompetent, and he should have been given more time to recruit and develop the talent he did bring to Manhattan Chizik has had 2 tough years at Iowa State. Still, I don’t believe he will be fired midway through his third season. I’m not sure any coach should, absent a major screw-up.

Progress is the key
I posted on this exact topic over at The Ralphie Report and have written two extensive posts about it at BOTC. It’s all about progress. Also, Hawkins numbers are skewed by the terrible first season he had, and anybody and everybody should have expected that he was going to have a tough time with the disarray CU was in when Barnett left (not to mention that he was a first year coach, and coaches often have difficult first seasons). He improved last year, going to a bowl game. His recruiting has been solid. If his offensive line hadn’t been decimated by injuries this year, I have little doubt CU would have won 7 or 8 games.
Contrast that with Prince, who has exhibited regression every single season in Manhattan. Contrary to what was posted below, there was a respectable amount of talent left when Snyder retired, the problem was that our assistant coaching staff had been depleted by the departure of guys like Bob Stoops, Mike Stoops, Mark Mangino, Brent Venables, Bret Bielema, and Jim Leavitt. The guys still around were not nearly the equal of the previous assistant coaches, and the results showed. Then, magically, Prince goes to a bowl game in his first year with primarily Snyder’s players, and has regressed each season since then.
I have written extensively on this subject <a href=“http://www.bringonthecats.com/2008/11/6/654934/why-the-comparison-isn-t-v’>here and ”http://www.bringonthecats.com/2008/10/23/641246/why-the-comparison-isn-t-v">here at BOTC, so I’m not going to rehash everything I said here. But we have seen significant regression in total wins, overall competitiveness, and recruiting during Prince’s tenure. Sure, if we gave him another year, he might have gotten things turned around. But the weight of the evidence points in the opposite direction, toward us digging a hole that would have taken years from which to recover.

TB, you know your team a lot better than I do
I really enjoyed reading your posts over there. On the surface, it did look to me like Prince got jobbed. All I ever saw the guy do was beat Texas, handily, twice.

Thanks, I appreciate it
Good discussion over here.
Also, for KevinJ below, I wouldn’t worry about Muschamp. He has not been mentioned at all for the K-State job. He has no prior ties to K-State, and it’s been made pretty clear that we’re looking for someone with head coaching experience rather than a coordinator this time around. Muschamp will probably get plenty of attention, but I’m guessing none of it will come from Manhattan.
Good God, sorry about the link failure above. Where have my html skills gone?

I don't think Muschamp would take Kansas State if he's offered it, because
He doesn’t want to fall into the Chizik trap. All too often, after one or two great seasons hot coordinators jump to a head coaching job in a conference that can afford to double their salary, but the position and program can’t give you a legit chance to build (recruit) and thus win against the people you need to topple in the conference. (How many Baylors, Vanderbilts, and Iowa States are there in the FBS)? Long story short, these coaches are usually fired after a few seasons because it’s virtually impossible to win fast…which is the unfair expectation. Translation: you can’t build your career. Kansas State doesn’t give Will a good risk to benefit ratio of success. He’d probably wind up leaving after a few years to go back down to a coordinator job, or leading a team in a smaller conference. And the rub is, more and more, if you want to grab a Texas, Florida, Notre Dame, etc you have to do it while you’re relatively young, because all AD’s crave consistency and a brand in their coach. So, if you’re spending time making lateral bounces you’re never going to be offered a job like Fulmer’s when they come open once in a blue moon.
Mack Brown is a great teacher. Will is learning from one of the best in the business on and off the field. I don’t think he’s long for Texas, unfortunately, but he could cultivate a lot by investing at least one more season of his time on the 40 Acres. Between his LSU and Auburn days and a couple years of Texas (if he can keep us in stride) he would absolutely be offered a big program that gives him a chance to grow and win. I just don’t think he’s going to get offered a Tennessee yet. And if he is, would he be ready for it? Further, I have to believe there are going to be some great schools that won’t open up at the end of this season but will get someone new at the close of next season (Auburn, Oregon, Iowa, South Carolina…maybe even Cal since they can never reach the next level). Any of these are a much less risky than a jump than Kansas State in terms of recruiting, importance in their conference, and resources.
Will’s moved around a lot. It’s the life of a coach, and I’m sure he’s fine with it, but he has a young family and I’m sure they are itching for some stability. Muschamp will be a head coach soon, but I don’t think he risks going to place like KSU that could easily be 3 seasons and out because he’s not going to turn them around and win against Missouri, Texas, Oklahoma, Texas Tech, and Oklahoma State fast, compared to putting in a bit more time at Texas, proving the hype, and then getting a 5 year contract at an even better school. Ironically, I do think Will could take what’s at Tennessee and turn it into a winner faster than what he would inherit at Kansas State.
