The Night Thread Texas Tech vs. Oklahoma State

One down, one got lucky and one to go.

It's been an interesting day. Not a good one for field goals or SEC QBs. Now we get to see some serious football.

I hope Tech stores a lot of this in their hump.

I know they think they’ve reached the big time. But you never know.

We all agree it's a damn close game.

I’d be shocked if it wasn’t. But it could be all one half for one, all second half for the other.

by Not Now Chief on Nov 8, 2008 9:12 PM CST up reply actions

A three way tie would be broken by BCS rankings. OU might be ahead of us in the final rankings, especially if they beat an undefeated Tech

by HornsFaninCalifornia on Nov 8, 2008 9:14 PM CST up reply actions

Neither

OU will beat Tech and OU will probably beat OSU. That leaves Tech, Texas and OU all with one loss and we will not win that tiebreak which goes back to who has the highest BCS ranking. by Top Jimmy on Nov 8, 2008 9:47 PM CST reply actions

Yeah, no doubt but...

We have to be careful what we wish for. There is almost no chance we remain ahead of OU in the BCS if they win out. And, to be quite honest, I would rather see Texas Tech in the Big 12 Championship game then OU.

I know but

the only reason we are ahead of them in the BCS right now is because of the computer polls. The humans already have OU ahead of us. ONce OU completes the rest of their schedule (if they win out), they catch us in the computers. Game over for us.

by MN_longhorny on Nov 8, 2008 10:08 PM CST reply actions

I don’t think the defenses in the SEC are all that special. I think the offenses (excluding Florida who hangs like 80 on all their opponents) are really bad.

You're counting Kansas, I take it. So, Kansas, UT, OSU...

While Texas had OU, Mizzou, OSU…like you, beating a #1 and two other top 10. You have a #1, a Top 10 and a Top 25. You’re going to scream about the scores, but until you get by OU, you’re resume is still light.

Except for...

we beat you?

That will remain what you have to explain away, and Missouri doesn’t necessarily look good enough to make that case on its own, in my opinion.

But unfortunately (or fortunately) it’s not my opinion, and voters will penalize last loser.

Let’s see how Texas plays @ Kansas, as that will be another common opponent on which we can compare penis sizes. Ditto A&M, although we were lucky enough to smoke them on the road.

Yea, maybe I’m overvaluing our 2nd half against A&M, or devaluing our 1st half against the Aggies, which is precisely what you’re doing in Re: Texas’ first half against Texas Tech. Flusters me that Tech plays a pretty flawless first half against the then #1 team in the country, and it’s because of your team, or extrinsic factors like nightness. We outgained you by 200 yards, by the way?

Back to the matter at hand, yea, maybe we didn’t smoke A&M, but we beat them by 18 or at worst 11 points, outgained them by 200 yards, too, and did it on the road. It was a convincing enough victory, I thought we smoked them, but I’m happy dialing that back to: We merely beat them convincingly.

Go register. Or else.

by Beergut on Nov 9, 2008 3:35 PM CST up reply actions

Scenario

In this scenario Texas has beaten the same ranked teams as tech. Also, Ou, Texas, and Tech will all have beaten each other so someone will have to be ranked below someone they beat. In addition, OU and Tech have their wins at home. Texas’ would be at a neutral site. Plus tech lost later. It is highly likely Texas would be ranked higher.

by JohnsonUT on Nov 8, 2008 10:30 PM CST up reply actions

Yeah, I guess losing late is a KILLER. I like our chances to play OU pretty close, though. I do think we have a better defense than OU at this point in the season, but there’s a very high probability neither team will stop the other.

It was more a joke than a serious complaint.

But you have to admit, officials have just amazingly stopped calling holds on the Tech O-Line even though it’s blatant most of the game. I’m not saying there is anything insidious going on here (it’s a Big XII thing to not call holds) but the teams with high-powered offenses get called much less. (I doubt it’s a product of perfect O-Line play)

The point is, it seems the Big XII has decided not to call holds on the higher powered teams so the QB has more time to find reads and therefore score more points, making us look even better than we are.

Just an opinion.

Hey....

You guys are flying high right now. After Texas beat Oklahoma State, severa of us got ahead of ourselves and started planning trips to the MNC and Kansas City. We were ranked #1 for 3 weeks in a row and started thinking about a 2nd MNC in 4 years. Penn State did the same thing, after they beat OSU, their fans were on this board complaining about the quality of our defense and the fact that they might get left out of the MNC. They hit #2 and were a “lock” for the MNC. Today, they lost to Iowa. You guys are the flavor of the month. You might defy the odds, beat Oklahoma, beat MiZZOU, and go to the MNC against Florida or USC or whoever and that would be great. The key here is to not get ahead of yourselves. Stay grounded, because if you do somehow lose to Oklahoma, it will be easier to swallow if you haven’t been trolling around every board on the internet bashing everybody else’s teams.
