Goodbye BCS: Let's fix this mess
Since it appears the BCS is about done for, the question is what the replacement should be. Sure, about everyone agrees that an 8 team playoff is in order, but how do you get those eight teams?
These should be the eight "best" teams based on record. And their records must be comparable, which means that schedules have to be balanced.
Therefore I propose that we utilize a system similar to the Premier League in soccer. Take the top 32 teams and organize them into four divisions of eight teams. Each team will play seven division games, three at home, three away, and one at a neutral site. Division play will take place in October and November with one 'bye' week for each team. The two top teams will always play each other at a neutral site and this will be in the last week of division play. The four teams with the best division records will draw the top four seeds in the tournament. Tie breakers will be straightforward and objective because of the common schedules.
Teams can schedule the remaining five regular season games as they wish. They can play their regular conferences, traditional rivals, powder puffs, or whatever. The remaining four tournament teams will be chosen by an impartial selection committee based on the total record, which includes division and nondivision games. Any team in the country is eligible for an at-large bid. The selection committee will also seed the at-large teams against the division winners.
The eight teams will play a three round elimination which will provide seven "bowl" games. Division winners will receive first round bowl births nearest their home locations.
At the end of the season, the four teams with the worst division records will be 'relegated' or dropped from division play (along with any teams undergoing suspensions). They will be replaced by teams chosen by the selection committee.

Did I miss something? Last I heard the BCS is here to stay for at least another cycle.

Replacing BCS
Dissatisfaction with the BCS is at an all time high, right? And not just around here. You can be sure Obama would not be talking playoff unless there was some momentum that way. So the question is how to do it.
Before you criticize someone, walk a mile in their shoes. If they get mad, you're a mile away AND you have their shoes.

To replace it before espn's contract is up
Would probably require congressional intervention (a la baseball’s steroids crap) or some kind of legal action. IMO, our congresspersons (is that a word?) and judges have better things to do with their time than meddle in sporting affairs.

top 32 teams
who can decide who the top 32 teams are at start of the year? theres huge disappointments all across the board with teams. clemson, lsu, west virginia, arizona state, tennessee, and illinois have underachieved compared to their starting season rankings. clemson, lsu, and west virginia were all top 10 teams at start of the year and are unranked right now. and theres other teams like cincy, ball state, and others who come from nowhere to do well. who honestly had cincy winning the big east over west virginia or pitt. noone. i like the idea but it needs to be set up on a larger scale. the english premier league also has 32 teams period. not more to be left out. plus their season is what? 7 months? dont follow soccer a lot but something of the sort if i remember correctly.
good idea tho

Obligated?
Are the schools contractually obligated to participate in the bcs?
What if a rich guy with 100 mil comes along and sets up a playoff system with bcs level or higher payouts. Maybe the schools will boycott the bcs and join the new system for higher payouts
The 17 Million dollar BCS bowl payouts are really not that hard for rich alumni to scrape together to build an alternate system. Heck, Vince Young can probably bankroll it himself
