Iraqi people are Longhorn fans!
I have to share this story with you guys because you will absolutely love it. So this morning, my guys and I are out on patrol. More of winning hearts and minds patrol , than combat patrol because that is what this war has pretty much turned into. As we are walking through a small farming village handing out candy to the kids and talking with the adults.
This little girl comes up to me holding up the ever famous Hook 'Em sign. Now in my previous two tours to Iraq I had taught this to many other kids and it has caught on pretty big here with troops teaching it all over the country, some of them of course think it means "rock on", but there are plenty of Longhorn fans in the military to teach Hook 'Em. They also know the shocker sign and all cuss words as well.
Anyways, when this little girl comes up to me, I throw the Hook 'Em back at her, but as I do it I yell, "Hook 'Em." She looks at me weird and starts yelling out "Hook 'Em" and running around throwing up the Hook 'Em sign with it for everyone to see and hear.
Of course one of my buddies in my fireteam is a Oklahoma native and of course he is a Sooners fan. He has been very smart the last couple of weeks and completely kept his mouth shut. But I guess he can no longer hold it because he walks up to me and asks me, "what are you teaching these kids?"
He then calls the little girl over and does the ever infamous inverted Hook 'Em. So now she is confused and is looking at us both. She stands there for a minute not real sure what to do. Then at the top of her lungs, she sreams, "Hook 'Em" and throws that beautiful sign up in his face all of a few inches from his nose. I just start laughing and he walks away head down, with his feelings all hurt. I can truly say that the Texas Longhorns are the world's team.

The world does love Texas..
I was in the Marshall Islands a few weeks back, and I saw a little girl wearing a Vince Young #10 jersey.
let's sum this up
musberger is a piece of crap, the BCS is a joke, there IS no NATIONAL CHAMPION until
we have a playoff. Colt will lose the heisman by 1 vote. Philadelphia fans should be
banned from MSG. Villanova’s coach is too good looking. Mike Leach deserves Lubbock
for the rest of his life. Art Briles has lost his mind after only 1 season at baylor. Barry Switzer should not be allowed to have children. and the 5 seconds of silence by Keith
Jackson after Vince’s run is the best sports moment of this decade!
Texas is loved all over the world unlike the land theives.
see you in Glendale!!
ut1ou2 for texas-ou weekend
when i was in afghanistan out with one of our tht's i taught a few of the kids there the Hook'Em as well.
this was back in july 04ish, but still. i have to say, The Longhorns are definately great therapy to help get passed the ugly side of having been over there and seen a few things.
If You See Kay, Oh You
Where are you
in Iraq? I’m here also in Kirkuk, luckily only for another month or so. We have some local’s here on base building barracks right behind our squadron and I talk to them daily and have taught them the Hook ’Em sign also. They love it! Everytime they see me they throw up the Horns and smile.
There is no greater privilege than supporting the Burnt Orange Bevo Boys...and Girls...
When I was
over there in 05-06, ( i got up at 2am to watch the National Championship, and then rolled out the gate at 7) I used to try and teach the Hook ’Em as well. I also used to see a bunch of Longhorn fans while I was stationed in Alaska. Some were military but most were not and then of course there was the occasional poser who did not even know the mascots name. Good Luck and is everyone still using the camo nets as sniper shields on the turrets?
I just returned from a 4 year tour of Alaksa
I was the one flying this flag in my yard.

Perhaps the most recognizable mascot in sports, and certainly the toughest looking, Bevo is a fixture
