How to break the BCS this year.

I will preface this by saying I know this will not happen, but this year's finish creates the perfect way to break the BCS system if certain schools had the will and the guts to do it (or even actually wanted it changed).

This year we have four traditional powerhouse teams with huge fan bases in four traditional powerhouse BCS conferences with only 1 loss and a decent argument (some better than others) as to why they should be there, left out of the championship game.  SEC-Alabama, Big 12-Texas, Big 10-Penn State, Pac 10-USC.  This many teams jobbed from these different conferences will not happen again in the near future.

If these four schools really wanted the system changed they could refuse to play in the BCS bowls this year unless they promise to change the system to some type of playoff system this next offseason.   If the promise was made, then they'd play.  If not, only the Orange Bowl b/w Cincinnati and Virginia and the "championship game" would be intact.  This wouldn't seem like whining because it would not change this year, it would be changing things for the next time around.

Also good about this year, there aren't desirable replacements just below those four schools that would bring in near the ratings.

The large followings of these four schools would make this a hugely popular move that would help blunt any possible legal, contractual problems etc.  The fact that there are four of them would help spread the blame/credit and would make the effect of pulling out more widespread.  In reality, they are all four playing for nothing but a shared paycheck these four don't necessarily need anyway, so no huge loss to these four schools.

Those four are...

Texas, USC, Alabama, Penn State. That it? Well, Tech would slide in over Texas, the Rose Bowl would be screwed and end up doing something like Oregon vs. Michigan State unless Ohio State wanted to go to the Rose Bowl instead, and the Sugar would just make Utah play Boise State for the Mid-Major national title. Awesome, let’s do it. Is someone going to refund my Fiesta Bowl ticket?

Taking your ball and going home

never worked in my neighborhood and it won’t work in the BCS.
One of the things you learn in life is that there’s always somebody ready to take your place should you decide to withdraw from any competition. In the case of the BCS, which was founded to make money, all those other teams who would give their left nut to be in a BCS game would still make money for Fox, even if not as much.

Changing the system would require major fan boycotts of Fox games (cutting off the flow of advertising money) for several years in a row, and serious reformers from among the BCS conference commissioners. A little congressional anti-trust sword-rattling wouldn’t hurt either.
