Around SBN: Race to the Roses & BCS Bowl Predictions

As Jonny Horn reported in the fanposts, the Fox affiliate in Mobile, AL is reporting that Muschamp will be named the new Auburn head coach today.

Obviously, we're hoping it's about as true as the leprechaun story that made Mobile news famous.

UPDATE: This appears to be a false alarm. Sorry for the front-page overreaction.

Links: here and here.

Once again, my bad. Breathe.

Not True

Orangebloods and Barnhardt are both reporting that Muschamp is not going to Auburn. With Muschamp saying, “I’m staying at Texas until they fire me!” So you don’t have to go throw up like I almost did this morning.

Ugh

This is not front page material.

No. way. this. is. happening. It makes no sense whatsoever.

My bad

Sorry about that one (this is the AO half of 40AS). The Sporting News seemed worth reporting, but should obviously have researched more thoroughly before jumping to the front page.

ESPN's Tim Griffin

is reporting that Muschamp spoke with Tony Barnheart of the AJC this morning and that he IS NOT taking the job. Here’s the link.

NOT TRUE

Some idiot reporter probably got a prank call message on his voice mail from an OU alum claiming he worked inside the Auburn Athletics office saying that Muschamp was the man, all in an attempt to sway McFarland to OU. Being the idiot reporter in the deep south who is missing a couple of teeth, he probably took it as gospel and ran to the news set wetting his pants, excited that he was going to be the first to break the story!

Funny how all of this started when McFarland came back from USC and said that it was still down to UT and OU.

Exactly

I couldn’t fathom a single rational way this was true. Totally implausible, given everything else we know.

Shortsighted

I think it is quite shortsighted to think that there is not “a single rational way” that Muschamp would take a head coaching job at Auburn. Coaches never live out their contracts, and head coach at Auburn is a loftier position that DC at Texas. Plus, it probably would pay at least 2 and a half times more than his new Head Coach in Waiting salary. Do I think that head coach at Texas is the best gig, period? Yes. Would I wait for my turn at Texas, rather than go somewhere else? Yes, but it isn’t inconceivable that he would want to go be a head coach for a few years, then try to come back to Texas when Mack leaves. I didn’t think this was likely to occur, but since it happens to at least one school EVERY YEAR, it would be foolish to completely rule this out as utterly impossible.

I dunno

I seriously sat there and thought about it for 10 minutes and couldn’t work it out.

You make a perfectly valid point, but you’re only telling half the story. We have more information than the generics you listed, and given what we know about this situation, I’m sorry, but I found it wholly implausible.

In reply

“Yes, but it isn’t inconceivable that he would want to go be a head coach for a few years, then try to come back to Texas when Mack leaves”

I believe Muschamp is smarter than that and has to know if he burned Texas by taking another HC position he would have close to no shot at returning to Texas as the HC

Returning to Texas

was a secondary thought. The bigger point was that he could have a head coaching job NOW instead of later. My comment on him returning to Texas was simply a statement that IF that is what he really wanted to do, then I could see how he thought it would be possible.

I agree with PB that the Auburn job seems very unlikely given everything that we know and everything that he has said. But after Saban, Petrino, and others, it is hard for me to feel safe, especially with all of the details. I will still not feel comfortable until Auburn names a head coach.

While we all know it's false...

The fox affiliate that started this mess has now pulled its story and published this one instead:

Sources told FOX10 News Auburn will likely name Will Muschamp its new head coach sometime Friday, but according to reports from the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, Muschamp says that is not the case.

Muschamp was Auburn’s defensive coordinator two years ago, and WVUE in New Orleans first reported Muschamp would likely be the Tigers new coach. This season he was on the sidelines as the Defensive Coordinator for the Texas Longhorns. He was also named as the Longhorns Head Coach in waiting.

We will continue to update this story as it develops here on Fox10tv.com.

Dan Patrick

DP, on his radio show, is reporting that Muschamp and Auburn are close to a deal, but there is a disagreement over language. Muschamp wants to report directly to the president, not the AD. Seems like a lot of detail for this story to be totally false.

by VAHorn on Dec 12, 2008 11:07 AM CST reply actions   0 recs

I also thought that was strange

That is indeed a lot of information for a completely baseless rumor. But then, there’s this:

Will Muschamp has issued a statement through the University of Texas, concerning the head football coaching job currently open at Auburn University.

The statement says, “I have not interviewed for any jobs. I’m not interested in any jobs. I’m happy here, my family loves Austin and I’m going to be at Texas.”

At this point, my biggest concern is that Muschamp might indeed have explored his options behind Mack’s back. I strongly doubt it, though.

Interesting

Unless he pulls a Saban, it looks like he is staying. What a strange story.

He hasn't signed his new contract right?

From what I remember, I don’t think he’s signed his new contract. He’s waiting until January for that? Can anyone confirm that?

I thought it was common knowledge

That Muschamp hated the Auburn AD. He said that when he left. I think some people are unnecessarily lending credibility to this rumor. Everyone needs to stop now. Think of how this is benefitting the Land Theives in their quest for McFarland?!?

I believe that one has been debunked along with the others Paragon

Though it is one more reason for me to continue a strict policy of ignoring WVUE.

Before this gets out of hand

Paragon drops in periodically and has for years. To my knowledge he has never been the pot stirring type, just a fan of a different school and naturally hasn’t been following this as closely as we have.

certainly not my intention to “stir the pot” I did not realize that the link I posted was from much earlier in the day…should of looked closer when posting on the fly.

Appreciate the kind words…good luck against tOSU!

As an Auburn fan I can honestly tell you that

our wonderful Athletic Director has decided to interview or make contact with every FBS coach between now and the first of the year. They will then narrow that list down to 25. Out of the final 25 names that have been decided on they will put them in a hat and draw one out. That person will then be offered the job at Auburn. It is expected that the person they draw out of the hat will be offered a deal similar to Nick Saban’s at Alabama regardless of who he is.

Yes, we, the Auburn Fans see what a fool Jay Jacobs is making of our University and it will continue until who knows when. So you might as well get use to the rumors of Will heading to Auburn because they will continue. Once we do have a coach, which will not be Will Muschamp, this circus will be OVER.

Please accept my apologies for the idiots that run our Athletic Department and the media outlets here in Alabama that run such stories without any VALID proof. Good luck in the Fiesta Bowl and Happy Holidays!
