Colt's Senior Year: Records in Sight
While I'm all for giving tOSU and the Fiesta Bowl their due attention, Colt's announcement that he was returning for his Senior year, along with this post from Barking Carnival, got me thinking about Colt's place in history. He already holds every major record at Texas, but what about nationally? Below are several major records that Colt has a shot at. The conclusion that can be drawn from these numbers is that we've been downright spoiled at the Quarterback position for the better part of a decade.
NCAA Career wins: 42, David Greene, UGA (2001-2004)
With a win over tOSU, Colt would finish his Junior year with 32 victories, needing only our standard 10 wins as a Senior to tie the winningest QB in NCAA history. 11 wins and it's only Colt at the top.
NCAA Career starts: 51, Phillip Rivers, NCST (2000-2003)
If he stays healthy, Colt definitely eclipses this one.
NCAA Touchdowns Responsible for: 146, Colt Brennan, HAW (2005-2007)
McCoy has been responsible for 99 touchdowns thus far. With a decent game against tOSU, and 13 or 14 games next year, this record is within reach (though by no means automatic). That Brennan put up those numbers in 3 years is mind-boggling.
NCAA Career Passing Efficiency: 168.9, Ryan Dinwiddie, Boise St. (2000-2003)
Colt currently sits at 159.1, good enough for 8th All-time. If Colt were to replicate his numbers from this year in 2009, he would finish with with a career passer rating of 164, good enough for 3rd All Time. This is where all the picks from his soph year come back to haunt him.
NCAA Career Completion Percentage: 70.4%, Colt Brennan, HAW (2005-2007)
Colt's career completion rate is 70.19%. If he were to duplicate his numbers from this year next year, his career completion percentage would be 72%. This one is definitely in sight.
In Conclusion:
Were Colt to come close reproducing his stats from this year in 2009, he would be set the records for Wins, Starts, TD's, Completion %, and be 3rd all time in Passer Rating. Not bad for a 3-Star prospect from Tuscola. It's quite possible that our last two QB's could end up BOTH being Top 10 All-Time players.

Colt could OWN the NCAA record book!
I guess that’s what you get for being a 4-year starter. Not many QBs get that opportunity.

Thanks for the post
Good info. (although he was a 3-star recruit).
I, for one, hope he doesn’t break the TD’s accounted for record, as it would probably mean we aren’t getting decent production out of our running game – again.

Nice to hear
Were Colt to come close reproducing his stats from this year in 2009, he would be set the records for Wins, Starts, TD’s, Completion %, and be 3rd all time in Passer Rating. Not bad for a 2-Star prospect from Tuscola. It’s quite possible that our last two QB’s could end up BOTH being Top 10 All-Time players.
Sadly neither may receive the heisman? What a joke. Thanks for the research!

Nice write up, ctex
It’s quite possible that our last two QB’s could end up BOTH being Top 10 All-Time players.
In response, none of those players listed above would be even remotely considered top 10 players, let alone top 25, top 50, etc. Even if Colt broke all those records, I wonder where he’d end up on the list? I imagine he’d need to pull in a Heisman either this year or next to be considered in the discussion.
Sadly neither may receive the heisman? What a joke.
Well played.

Not only that...
he’d have to win a national championship!

He would need a title to garner consideration for Top 10.
And you’re right, none of those other players are even close. If Colt had a title, however, and consolidated 4 of the 5 records, I don’t see how you could keep him out.
When Colt’s career at Texas is over, if next year goes as many of us believe it should, that Colt vs VY debate is going to be a doozy.

I'd still take Vince no matter what Colt does.

If Colt does next year what he has done this year
I think it’s at least a debate.
If Colt puts up 2008-like numbers in 2009 and we win the MNC, there will be a strong case to be made for Colt, especially considering that Young’s supporting cast his junior year was considerably better than McCoy’s was in 2008 or will be in 2009.

I'll still take VY.
VY would’ve easily made us repeat champs. He transcended the game. Colt is great in his own right but VY was another level..he’s on the level of the Bo Jackson’s, the Herschel Walkers, etc.

You're not giving colt enough credit
If Colt was playing like he is now, and had the same supporting cast he had in 2006, we would have won another championship.
Colt is trancendent with a 77% completion rate, no one’s been able to stop him. There were 7 dropped passes in the TT game that kept us out of the National Championship this year with this squad.
It’s only a pity he can’t throw and catch the ball himself.

"...but VY was on another level."
Yep. Its amazing how susceptible people are to what I call the “here/now” fallacy, by which people are prone to exaggerating the historical significance of whatever is currently in front of their faces.
If you could go back to 2005, and tell our fanbase that in fewer than 4 seasons, people would largely have forgotten what it is like to watch Vince command this team, they would hardly have believed you.
But the fact that there is an argument at all on this thread is evidence that it is already happening.

Brook, you are dead on
There is no scenario that i could imagine, make up or faintly envision where I take (juniors)Colt over Vince if both were available to lead my COLLEGE football team. Period. Tech wouldn’t have beaten Texas period. No safety to start the game, couldn’t pin ears back to rush, nothing. He changed entire defensive schemes. Colt runs well enough but most of it stems from the fact that teams will live with his running vs planning against it.
This is about a great, QB versus a once in a lifetime QB.

Im not taking Colt over Vince either
But make no mistake, we still get that safety. That one is on Greg (mainly) and the O-line (a little bit).

I'll take Colt over Vince if...
he brings home a BCS title. Until Colt wins the big one Vince will always overshadow Colt.

I'm just
happy we have another qb that we’re even considering in the same league. and hope we will have a mccoy/gilbert argument four years from now.

I think
Next year after we win the NC game and Colt wins the Heisman, he overshadows VY

I'm late to the debate, but I think
it’s apples and oranges. Vince was on another level. No college player could compare and probably never will compare. And he won. And he won heroically. That’s VY, the apples.
Colt has always had a workmanlike game. He is not on another level. But he wins. He finds a way to win. He’s not fast, his arm is not the strongest, his running is smart but only above average. But he’s a smart, heady player with guts and determination to find the open man, to run where it’s available, to hand off when the DE crashes down. When Colt is on, it’s hard to beat Texas. That’s the oranges.
But when it’s all said and done, they’re both great quarterbacks. No one should dispute that.
