Forgot we were supposed to play Utah this year
http://blogs.sltrib.com/utes/2008/12/matchup-that-could-have-been.htm
Of course, this blog entry I posted above is all about "what if?" Utah had beaten Texas this year. I guess I'd be just as likely to say "What if Texas won in Utah?" That might have been the edge we needed to play in KC and Miami. Regardless, not here to play the "what if" game. Instead, this is actually the first I had heard that Urban Meyer dumped the game because he thought it would make their schedule too tough. Had this been common knowledge? If so, maybe I just missed it. Anyway, interesting to think about how this season would have been different if we played at Utah vs. UTEP this season.

Wow
That is crazy, I remember that now. I wonder if we will be saying the same thing about Arkansas next year.

Dont think that's right
We got bumped from Utahs schedule because they changed conferences and had to accomodate all the new teams on their schedule. Though I guess that change couldve “made their schedule too tough.”

Utah has always been in the Mountain West
They haven’t changed conferences since the Mountain West was formed

Did the mtn west add a bunch of schools then?
It’s been a while since they cancelled so the details are hazy….

Circular argument
OU had to play Chattanooga because Clemson backed out of their scheduled game to play Bama instead.

not really an argument
Just an observation. But you bring up a good point that people don’t always remember, or they fail to recognize. Scheduling isn’t as easy at is seems. First of all, you have to find a willing partner to play another “big boy.” In other words, Texas has to find someone good to play, but it has to be a team also willing to play Texas. Secondly, scheduling is done so far in advance that teams can really drop off. See Arkansas of this year….Third, when a team decides to bail on a scheduled game, there often isn’t much repercussion other than a possible financial penalty. This means that the power team has to scramble to find a replacement team, and unfortunately that is often a lower FBS team, or even an FCS team.
No easy solutions to simply scheduling tougher teams out of conference.
