Third-ranked Texas volleyball took care of Iowa State 3-1 on Saturday to advance to their first Final Four since 1995. Destinee Hooker, Michelle Kocher, and Lauren Paolini (Most Outstanding Player) made the Regional All-Tournament Team.

Congratulations to the Gazelles...

Huskers surprise

Nebraska held off Washington in a 5-set thriller 14-25 23-25 25-17 26-24 15-13. I was pretty sure the Huskies would win on their home court. But I’m glad it’s two Big XII teams in the Final Four rather than two Pac 10 teams. The Huskers now take on Penn State – which has yet to drop a set this year – following the Texas / Stanford match on Thursday. The Gazelles lost to Stanford in 5 sets in the second match of this season (ironically also in Omaha).

Dogpile!

Texas athletic teams rarely dogpile.

Augie Garrido’s Longhorns baseball teams never did it until they won a College World Series.

Mack Brown’s football players dogpile on every play so it’s not as neat a deal.

Before Saturday, Jerritt Elliott’s volleyball had never dogpiled. That is, until Juliann Faucette’s fourth-set kill ended Iowa State’s upset bid and punched Texas’ ticket to the Final Four. Longhorn players roared out onto the court and gave the school what’s believed to be the first dogpile since the baseball team won the 2005 College World Series.

Sorry Augie, but you’re going to have to forgive these women for dogpiling before getting to Omaha.

“It’s all about the dogpile,‘’ said junior Ashley Engle. "We hadn’t done that before. It’s a great thing to have in the back of our your mind. That was the greatest dogpile of my entire life.”
