Gazelles go All American on your ass
Texas has placed an unprecedented THREE players on the first team of the AVCA Division I All-America team this year. Tempest will know for sure, but I think this is the best we've ever done in school history. It's an impressive feat, but the scary thing is - Penn State landed four on the first team, and two more on the second team.
Back to the Gazelles....
Our three honorees are
1. Destinee Hooker (3rd time honoree)
2. Ashley Engle (2nd time honoree)
3. Lauren Paolini (2nd time honoree)
Engle, a Yorba Linda, Calif, native earned first-team honors after notching AVCA All-Central Region First Team and All-Big 12 First Team accolades. The junior ranks second on the Texas team with 2.93 kills and 2.23 digs per-set, while her .307 attack mark ranks eighth in the Big 12. Engle also averages 0.75 blocks and 1.01 assist per-set and has tallied 31 service aces.
Hooker, a San Antonio, Texas, native grabbed first-team All-America honors after garnering second team honors last season. The junior has already been named AVCA All-Central Region First Team and All-Big 12 First Team. Hooker paced the Longhorns attack in 2008, averaging a team-best 4.08 kills per-set and a Big 12-best 4.86 points per-set. She ranks seventh in the league with a .320 attack mark and leads her Texas squad with a team-best 35 service aces.
Paolini earns first-team honors and her third postseason honor after claiming AVCA All-Region First Team and All-Big 12 First Team honors. The Ann Arbor, Mich., native ranks second in the NCAA with a .483 hitting percentage, a mark that will obliterate her single-season UT record of .419, set in 2007. Paolini ranks fourth on the squad with 2.60 kills per-set and ranks second on the team with 0.87 blocks per-set.
The Player of the Year will come from this bunch. That honor will be announced Friday night in Omaha. I would think it's down to Foluke Akinradewo (Stanford), Nicole Fawcette or Megan Hodge (both PSU), but Destinee might have an outside chance, as might Jordan Larson of Nebraska.
Freshman of the Year is Kelly Murphy of Florida, who was heavily recruited by Texas. I'm disappointed Michelle didn't win this award, but I imagine she'll get a spot on one of the teams next year.

Slightly off-subject, but what are you hearing about Kelsey Bone matriculating to Texas? Just saw her featured in ESPN Mag, with a picture taken in the halls of my old high school, no less! I’d love to see her wreck shop on the 40 Acres.

Per a quick hit on Orangebloods, Bone is choosing
between us and agric. Imagine that. Can’t wait for Thursday when the Gazelles begin their conquest of Omaha.
I'll never forget ol' what's-his-name.

Kelsey was at the Tennessee game Sunday
Always helps when a recruit gets to watch us take down the reigning national champions… Coach G has a reputation as a good closer, so I’m hopeful. Besides, she’s got Mack and Rick at her disposal to help seal the deal. Texas coaches have been known to use each other during recruiting visits to help these young ladies realise that UT has a combination of talent, resources and tradition that no other school can match.
aTm has had unprecedented success under Gary Blair so it will be a tough battle. But I’m much happier that we’re fighting this battle with the Aggies instead of the Land Thieves. Since landing the Paris thugs the Poodle hasn’t had much luck on the recruiting trails. And I couldn’t be happier.
Texas has the makings of a solid class for 2009. Adding Bone would put us in the top 5, where we belong.

Plus
The double entendres would be fun.
Bone gets up for the game against the Agros, sticks it to them.
Perhaps the most recognizable mascot in sports, and certainly the toughest looking, Bevo is a fixture

BTW, the Tennessee win is already paying dividends - for 2011!
When Texas dispatched Tennessee on Sunday for perhaps the biggest win of coach Gail Gostenkors’ Longhorn career, Peoples was in the stands, as she has been year after year, game after game.
“That definitely got me excited,” Peoples said. "From watching them in previous years, I see a huge improvement in all the girls. I think that’s just a small glimpse of how Coach G is going to do with the program.
Cassie Peoples is our PG of the future. Not sure how much I like someone committing this early, but Cassie definitely looks like a gamer, and if she already knows what she wants to do more power to her. Looks like Horns fans need to get used to having both the men and women in the Top 5 for the forseeable future.

Karch Kiraly loves Texas
The former King of the Beach is providing color commentary for the Gazelles’ matchup with Stanford this afternoon on ESPNU.
"Texas is an absolutely phenomenal sports university," Kiraly said. "And, with the way their volleyball program produces in terms of coaching and recruiting, it’s good to see them here this week."

Game on, Gazelles!
Another huge matchup against a Pac 10 school that has been the bane of Texas in the post-season of late. Stanford beat Texas 3-2 in our second match of the season – also in Omaha – and are the 2 seed in the tournament. They are almost identical to Texas in terms of athleticism and system and are led by Foluke Akinradewo, Cynthia Barboza and former Texas recruit Alix Klineman.
The wild card for the match today is Destinee Hooker. For some reason Destinee always goes off during nationally televised matches. If we get a double-double from the Hammer of God I think we have a good chance of pulling off what would be considered a mild upset.
Whatever happens, this has been a huge step forward for the program. As Jerritt noted in his press conference:
"First of all when I came to the program in 2001, this was one of the goals; to get Texas back and return the pride to Texas volleyball. It’s been a long process. We’ve been knocking of the door the last two years and haven’t been able to make that step. This year was the first time we have been able to do that. I’m very proud about the type of players we have recruited and the type of quality of people that we have and most importantly about the foundation that we have laid. This isn’t the type of team that is going to just go away after one year. We’ve built this the right way, in terms of trying to return here every year for a national championship … The season isn’t just a success based on getting to the final four, we have the talent to compete here and to walk on the floor and win."
The Cardinal barely even mention Texas. I hope they’re looking past us towards a rematch with Penn State in the championship game. The Gazelles will make them pay if the are.

Statesman gets in on the act
At the Forty Acres, sports are ascendant. The University of Texas football team ended the season ranked third in the country and is headed to a Fiesta Bowl game with Ohio State.
Both the men’s and women’s basketball teams are burning up the hardwood, and both are ranked fifth in the polls. The men are 9-1, and the women are off to their best start in decades.
Somewhat lost in all that burnt orange glory is a volleyball team that is playing in the Division I Final Four this weekend. The third-ranked Longhorns, riding a 14-match winning streak, have reached the national semifinals for the first time since 1995.
The Cardinal is led by middle blocker Foluke Akinradewo and outside hitter Cynthia Barboza, who both had big games in the Elite Eight victory over Texas in 2006. Akinradewo was held in check in the first match against the Longhorns this year, but that gave opportunities to Barboza (18 kills) and Alix Klineman (21 kills). On the other side of the net, Destinee Hooker had one of her best matches of the season with 24 kills. In three matches against teams in the Final Four — Stanford and two matches against Nebraska — she averaged 19.7 kills.

Penn State looking to make history
The Lions have won 109 consecutive sets, breaking the 105-set streak by Florida in 2003. Penn State’s average winning margin is a commanding 25-16. Penn State also has won 62 consecutive matches, another NCAA record.
They are playing Nebraska in the Huskers’ back yard though, so expect them to face their stiffest challenge yet. I’ll predict they lose their first set this season but still prevail 3-1 to advance to the final.
