Shipley appeals for sixth year, plans to return
Fifth-year senior receiver Jordan Shipley has filed the necessary paperwork with the NCAA to apply for a sixth year of eligibility.
Because of a series of knee and hamstring problems, Shipley missed two full seasons with the Longhorns, finally coming into his own this year, when he was named a third-team Associated Press All-American.
Shipley said he has no intention of entering the NFL draft if the NCAA grants him the medical hardship extra year.
Texas coach Mack Brown sounded optimistic that the request would be granted. “He lost two years,” Brown said. “There’s no gray area here now.”

Great news, if ...
Shipley is just about essential for a run at national championship. Still, WAAAAYYYY too much youth in receiving corps at this time. Blaine Irby rehab may take a long, long time, possibly through next fall. I don’t see a major TE recruit coming in for spring training in 2009. H-back position Shipley played post-Irby was absolutely critical to success of passing game.
2009 Recieving Corps...
Shipley is the leadership at WR we need next year. Plus, as good as Brandon Collins has played throughout the course of this year, you can supplant him in place of Cosby next year. With the quality reps Williams, Kirkendoll, and Collins have gotten this year there is no reason anyone can call the WR position our weakest link next year. McCoy is gonna get the ball to whoever is lined up on the edge. Awesome news for the ’Horns and for Ship. Hook ’Em Horns and OU Sucks!!
In a 3WR set, I see Shipley, Collins, and Williams right now. I guess Shipley’s staying at Z receiver. I’ll bet Collins goes to Cosby’s X, and Williams and Kirkendoll battle for the Y. I do hope Hales, Grant, or one of the other young fellows pushes strongly at X and Y.
This is going to be a very, very experienced receiving corps that Chiles or Gilbert will inherit. Let’s hope some great depth follows the current freshmen and sophomores.

Interesting Twist
OB is reporting that Grant has been practicing at TE this past week and is getting great reviews from the staff.

Grant? I guess I could see that. Irby is the only guy of much consequence at the position right now, although I guess Barrett Matthews or Chris Whaley could figure into the equation. I do hope that this news about Grant isn’t a consequence of a bad recovery outlook for Irby.
What’s the problem? Why can’t UT get the TE recruits these days? I know it’s not necessary to have a highly-acclaimed recruit to end up with a solid TE, but it’d be nice to have the option of playing offensive sets with the TE.

Precedent
Southern California guard Jeff Byers had his request for a sixth year of eligibility approved Friday by the NCAA, allowing him to return to the Trojans next season.
Because he missed two seasons with injuries, Byers petitioned the NCAA for a “clock extension waiver,” and his request was granted.
After appearing in all 13 USC games as a true freshman in 2004, Byers was sidelined with injuries the next two years. He had arthroscopic surgery to remove torn cartilage in his right hip in 2005, forcing him to miss that season. Then, in 2006, after seeing action in the opener, he suffered a back sprain and was out the rest of that season.
Still a Blaine Irby fan
