When news filtered out of the McFarland camp that his family, once thought to be strong Texas leans, were now firmly pushing OU onto Jamarkus, many observers were left wondering what happened. Trips Right has your answers.

Very interesting. I struggling to figure out what this means for us.

Thanks for putting this up front.

Very curious how they changed their position, and so strongly so.

In Mack Brown We Trust!

by Cyrus on Dec 19, 2008 5:26 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

Surely.

This whole thing stinks, and it’s kind of starting to piss me off. Why would they prohibit the Texas coaches from doing a home visit? Is there a dangerous side of Mack Brown that only the McFarland family can perceive?

by Kool Hand on Dec 19, 2008 5:36 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Can someone sum up the article ? not quite sure what it is saying (pretend like you are explaining it to a fifth grader)

by MJY6087 on Dec 19, 2008 5:48 PM CST reply actions   1 recs

My understanding is that

the Texas coaches somehow found out about illegal inducements being offered to the McFarland family, which led them to step back from the process and begin documenting what they knew. Meeting McFarland at school instead of in his home means the Texas coaches conducted their meetings in public, where there would be less chance of being accused of doing the same thing the other school(s) is/are doing.

by GhostofBigRoy on Dec 19, 2008 5:53 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

So....

If McFarland knows that those other universities (ahem, OU!) are doing illegal things, why would he even want to go there? While it is tempting to help out family members, I’d be turned off by the coaches and the program (especially if Texas is a clean program).

OU must be offering something big for McFarland’s mom to be on board. What a dirty program i.e Rhett Bomar and that other douche that went down with him. I can also see USC doing some dirty dealings can anyone say Reggie Bush and family

JD Quinn

He was on T.V. last night

Quinn played for Montana, losing to Richmond in the FCS title game. Hats off to the Spiders for the first national championship in any sport! Plus, it’s a true NC, with no M needed. What a novel concept.

Funny

I was just thinking that a team that began the season 4-3 winning a “championship” unequivocally proves the point that playoffs don’t reward the actual “team of the year.”

But unequivocal proof never seems to convince anybody.

Katy’s state championship today furthers my argument, and I needn’t bring up the New York Giants. It seems that a mediocre champion is no longer a common result of a playoff tournament, it is now the most common result.

i'm not really familiar with the whole recruiting process...

if the Texas side is aware of illegal stuff going on and they are said to be documenting it, then why isn’t the NCAA getting involved? Are we just waiting to get more info or concrete evidence or what?

Rumors

Came out to nothing last year. This year will probably be the same. I don’t like spreading rumors until something has been substantiated.

by Wells on Dec 19, 2008 6:19 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

I agree. I don't know what is going on; no one does on these boards.

We need to be careful that we don’t develop a style that says: So-and-so has cooled on Texas, it must be that the other schools are employing illegal recruiting tactics. This same thing occurred last year when Darrell Scott chose CU. I’m not so naive to think that this stuff is not going on – frankly, if I suspected anyone, it’d be Stoops – but we just can’t throw stuff out there. The fact that all along it was said that McFarland’s mom was a big Mack fan, then to have her make a complete about-face – now that looks real suspicious. What could have happened?

I'll never forget ol' what's-his-name.

by Horntod on Dec 19, 2008 6:43 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Let him go!

Mack Brown has said it before, he wants players that grew up following the Horn’s and want to be apart of a great tradition that is the University of Texas. Let JM go to the sooners and we will see him next year! What happened to Scott when he played the Horns in Colorado, he just couldn’t compete.

Here we go again..

We are not going to get every single recruit.. and when a 5* sours on UT we cry foul..

by HornWinked on Dec 20, 2008 10:35 AM CST reply actions   0 recs

No, it’s the way things are going down. We all know we’re not going to get every 5 star recruit.

If his family is so interested in kick backs, they better be aware that he could easily end up like Bomar at some D2 school. Then they’ll be getting no kickbacks as well as screwing up his life. I’m sure they’re not worried about screwing up his life, but they’ll be much less likely to get any NFL money out of him.

by UT_BKC on Dec 20, 2008 11:47 AM CST up reply actions   0 recs

I dont pay for premium sites so I have no idea whats been said in those articles or those message boards, but on the freeboards I hadn’t seen anybody cry foul over the recruitment of JM. About the only thing I have seen is people wondering why his mom did a 180 on Texas. But I hadn’t seen or heard rumors about shady dealings, until this article. So I wouldn’t say “Here we go again” as this isn’t just rumors being bandied about by fans who know nothing. This is a rumor from a reputable source, a rumor I might add that is apparently making the rounds through OU premium sites as well as Texas ones.

Also, as far as I’ve read, JM hasn’t soured on Texas, just the family has. And these extras that Stoops is promising the family could be nothing more than promising to offer scholarships to a couple of JM’s friends next year(This is the one rumor I’ve heard outside of the Trips Right article).

by urbanzero on Dec 20, 2008 12:04 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Not that simple

Why would the family sour on UT? That’s why Texas fans who have followed this thing are suspicious. Several months ago, the family was all about UT. Now, they’re not only indifferent toward Texas, but they’re actively cold toward the coaches, not allowing in-home visits, while they invite multiple OU coaches.

This isn’t a simple instance of whining fans.

by Kool Hand on Dec 20, 2008 4:02 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Is it possible

that the family would sour on UT because they prefer the Sooner coaches over ours? The parents may have a better relationsip with their coaches.. i dont know.. and I’m sure Stoops is selling the 6 Big 12 Championships.. and putting DT’s into the league.. Tommie Harris, Dusty Dvoracek, McCoy, etc

I just get tired of hearing everyone get so worked up over a message board “RUMOR” So yes.. i do believe this is another instance of crying foul.

It was merely your ridiculous charade that inspired me to post.

by BrooklynHorn on Dec 21, 2008 7:11 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Of course it's possible

Sure, the parents may have a better relationship. That sounds like just as much a rumor as any of the other things implied on this board. How are your rumors any more accurate or truthful than mine?

Just Maybe

he is looking at FACTUAL DATA: OKLAHOMA 6 Confrence Championships and Mack has only 1 in 11 years, heck he proablly even knows mack has as many confrence championships as an Oklahoma assistant as he does at ut : )

Just a thought people…..

by BIGXIISOUT on Dec 20, 2008 4:11 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

Let's take a look at Stoops' other accomplishments

More recently, Mack Brown is in Bob Stoops’ head. 3 out of 4, and next year, 4 of 5.

If you think Stoops’ conference championships alone fostered the anti-Texas mindset in Lufkin, you’re just delusional.

by Kool Hand on Dec 22, 2008 1:51 AM CST up reply actions   0 recs

That maybe true 6 conference championships and all, but they never win the big game! Mack Brown on the other hand has had success on that big game! Oklahoma has been a joke representing the BIg 12 every year just about! Hookem Horns Bitches

So you don’t consider the BIG XII Championship a Big Game?

What about when the undefeated number number 2 team in America comes to town and we spank them by 40, that’s not a big game? Evrn though they had just dominated your team a couple of weeks back?

Yea I’ll admit we got Embarrassed by USC for the championship and last year by West Virginia, but the LSU loss was a great game as was the Boise State game.

How did it feel to root for OU two weeks in a row vs Tech and O-State?

by BIGXIISOUT on Dec 20, 2008 5:05 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

well first of all, to answer your initial post...

your thought doesn’t really make sense because at least as far as I understand the situation/rumor, the latest developments are that JM said he wants to go to Texas now. It’s his family that has made a pretty sudden, 180 degree turn and is pushing for him to go to OU.

Plus, if we are going to talk about him looking at “FACTUAL DATA”, how do you know he isn’t looking at the overall 58-40 Texas vs. OU record? Or if you want something more recent, maybe us winning 3 of the last 4? Hell, he was at the game this year, that outcome could be factoring into his decision. Perhaps the fact that Texas has won 4 out of their last 5 bowl games while OU has lost 4 out of 5?

Not trying to dispute your info of OU’s conference championships and yes, I do consider all those games you listed big games for you guys, but you can’t only look at everything positive OU has done and ignore everything good Texas has accomplished.

There’s no telling if any of this info about JM is true, but if it is, then it is undeniably sketchy. Where ever he chooses though, I wish him the best; he seems like a great kid and he needs to go where ever he feels he will have the best opportunities for his career.

Hook ’em!

NO

The Big 12 Championship game is against inferior Big 12 North teams.

Texas Tech was overrated, and plays horrible on the road (remember last year in Tech). What was the score of the only game that matters? 45-35

The LSU game wasn’t a good game, and ou choked again.

How does it feel knowing that everyone outside of oklahoma doesn’t think ou should be in the national championship game? How does it feel knowing ou is goinbg to lose another BCS game? How does 45-35 feel?

by Longhorns84 on Dec 22, 2008 11:44 AM CST up reply actions   0 recs

how does it feel to go to a championship undeserving? anybody heard word on how the devon kennard visit went?

45-35 never forget that!

hooked on texas, listen I respect uts history as much as the next guy and I know the history of our rivalry favors texas in "W"’s and the only reason I brought up the championships is because of the ABSURDITY of this thread.

“There’s no telling if any of this info about JM is true, but if it is, then it is undeniably sketchy. Where ever he chooses though, I wish him the best; he seems like a great kid and he needs to go where ever he feels he will have the best opportunities for his career”

This we can agree on…..Now will you please pretty please answer my last question in the previous post?

Eyesoftejas, I very vividly remember 45-35 a game where we were leading well into the 4th quarter but lost, it sucks and I give your team credit……but it seems to me you have forgotten 39-33 a game in which you only led for 1 minute and 20 seconds but try and pretend that you dominated and should have won?

by BIGXIISOUT on Dec 20, 2008 5:53 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

well, glad we agree on something

To answer “How did it feel to root for OU two weeks in a row vs Tech and O-State?”, well, I wouldn’t know because I certainly didn’t :)

I actually was pleased when you guys killed Tech just because they they were annoying the hell out of me at that time, for obvious reasons lol. When I was watching that game, I wasn’t thinking ahead about all the implications and “If this happens, then this is good/bad for Texas” scenarios. It was simply a matter of what outcome makes me happy right now and at that time, I wanted nothing more than to see Tech come crashing down to earth. I didn’t really have any doubts that ya’ll would win that one anyways.

But I was cheering for Okie State when they played you, so I can’t really answer your question.

Also, at the risk of incorrectly generalizing the views of my fellow Longhorn fans, I will go ahead and say that while many wanted Tech to lose against OU, I feel that at least half of the fanbase was like me and rooted against OU in Bedlam.

by hooked on texas on Dec 20, 2008 7:25 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

OKAY, I respect your honesty the texas fans I know personally were rooting for us and avoiding me like the plague……. Are coming to Phoenix for the game? I live here so I can direct about where to eat, drink, play golf etc if you like. I hope you all spank big 10 Ohio State

by BIGXIISOUT on Dec 20, 2008 7:53 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Sorry BIGXIISOUT I don’t consider that a big game! The BIg XII North has been week for the last few years! I consider the very last game at the end of the season that all the big teams, let me say that again, all the big teams have been fighting for (BCS) The big game of the season. And sorry Oklahoma just isn’t getting it done……………. Oh yeah you forgot Boise State was one of those game you forgot to mention. Couldn’t even beat Boise fucking state!

KCMORSE, it’s posters like you that make me seriously want to reconsider my life long commitment to “PRO-LIFE” causes and become "PRO-CHOICE : ) , go back and read my post as I certainly did mention the Boise State loss just not as a BLOWOUT as you did. Have a nice life and enjoy the Fiesta Bowl.

I will enjoy the Fiesta Bowl! As I enjoy all the bowl games Texas is in. But I want you to enjoy another embarrasing finish with your beloved Sooner choking on anothe big game chump. Big game Bob what a choke. Try getting those big wins at the end of the season before you can earn that name. BIg game………. Please

What KC not man enough to admit you were wrong that I did mention the Boise loss?

Sure I’m dissappointed at our recent bowl history………………….But are you not just as dissappointed that SLACK BROWN has only 1 BIGXII title in 11 years after all those top 5 recruiting classes?

What about 3 consecutive BIGXII titles for the Sooners? Do we get any respect from you for that?

by BIGXIISOUT on Dec 20, 2008 6:35 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

You know what your right, you did mention Boise State. I apologize I over looked that. Good luck in your teams Champioship! I know I’m still a little salty about our situation, but shit i’m actually looking forward to our Fiesta Bowl game. Hopefully next year we won’t have the same problem with 1 game and having everything so controversial at the end of the season

by kcmorse on Dec 20, 2008 6:49 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

KCMORSE, listen unlike some dillusional OU fans I would be just as ticked if we were on your side because the tiebreaker rule use was pure wacky, even if it was the FIFTH tiebreaker, but that said nobody in their right mind would say we should change the rule in the middle of the season after all 12 schools voted on this years ago. ANother sad thing about your situation as a texas fan is that your weaker non confrence schedule is what really did you in and it appears it could do the same to you for many years to come, look below at your upcoming non confrence schedule compared to ours:

Texas

2009 Season

La-Monroe
@ Wyoming
Central Florida
UTEP

2010 Season
@ Rice
Wyoming
UCLA
Florida Atlantic

2011 Season
Rice
@UCLA
Central Florida

2012 Season
Wyoming
@ Mississippi

2013 Season
Mississippi

Now, take a look at what Oklahoma has coming up in the near future :

2009 Season

@ Miami
Tulsa
BYU (in Dallas)

2010 Season
Air Force
Florida State
@ Cinci
Utah State

2011 Season
@ Florida State
Tulsa

2012 Season
Notre Dame

2013 Season
@ Notre Dame
Tulsa

2014 Season
Tennessee
@ Tulsa

2015 Season
@ Tennessee
Tulsa

Also, in 2016 Oklahoma beings a home-home with Ohio State(2016-2017) and then a home-home with LSU (2018-2019).

by BIGXIISOUT on Dec 20, 2008 7:39 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

I concede that OU had bigger things in mind...

when they scheduled those opponents, as all are perennially respectable programs.

But it should be pointed out that 3 years from now, it is entirely possible (if not probable) that UCLA and Ole Miss will be better than Miami, Florida St., Notre Dame, and Tennessee.

by BrooklynHorn on Dec 20, 2008 11:30 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Tennessee

is the only team that MIGHT be good.

by Longhorns84 on Dec 22, 2008 11:51 AM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Yeah I’ve seen our upcoming schedules it looks like complete horeshit. I wish they would ad some strenght in our scheduling. I wish they would stop scheduling all these generic Florida teams on it Florida Atlantic, Florida International. Teams Like Oklahoma and Texas in the Big 12 division should be playing 1 or 2 decent teams in the SEC as well as getting a team or 2 against the big 10 or ACC

by kcmorse on Dec 20, 2008 9:35 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

Next year would be the year

to not worry about bad non-conference scheduling. We WILL be preseason ranked #1-3, so that is key with respect to the Coaches and Harris Poll. If we win out, we WILL be in the top 2 in the BCS.

by goingforthecorner on Dec 21, 2008 2:15 AM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Everyone realizes Arkansas went to the SEC championship the year we schedule this game? And that they’ve been as recently as two years ago? We had no way of knowing they’d be so bad this year. They also really screwed us next year by backing out of the game.

Big12, who are you bragging about on your schedule? 7-5 Miami that didn’t make a bowl? Notre Dame? LOL! Mighty Tulsa that lost to Arkansas (as well as UH and ECU)? BYU that lost all their games against decent schools this year?

Yeah, when you schedule Miami, it looked like it could be a pre-bowl NC game. But they are pretty down right now (certainly give thier new coach props for starting the turn around). ND is just HORRIBLE. But that looked good when you scheduled it too. I see you have Tennesse on your schedule in a few years. If you’d played them this year, it’d have hurt you just as much as Arkansas hurt us.

So don’t come with any of this crap about we need to schedule tougher opponents. At least we don’t schedule non D1 schools.

by UT_BKC on Dec 21, 2008 3:14 AM CST reply actions   0 recs

it’s really late (early). That was supposed to be “7-5 Miami that didn’t even make a bowl last year?”

by UT_BKC on Dec 21, 2008 3:15 AM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Lets be honest here

Arkansas was actually 4-7 when we scheduled them in March. They won the SEC West the following season.

by hodad on Dec 22, 2008 9:51 AM CST up reply actions   0 recs

No, this game has been scheduled much longer than that. We schedule 6 years out. That’s why we know we’re playing Ole Miss in 5 years…

by UT_BKC on Dec 22, 2008 12:26 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

They’re not always scheduled 6 years out. The Arkansas series was scheduled and then announced in March of 2004. I know this because I was all set to make the same argument that you made above in an argument with a Sooner fan and decided to research it first to avoid the looking stupid.

The UT-Arkansas series was under discussions throughout the 2005 season and was finalized in mid-March 2005. Arkansas won the SEC West during the 2006 season. They finished the 2005 season 4-7.
