So... What now?

Jamarkus McFarland just about ruined my Christmas.  I was getting so pumped thinking about the possibility of landing a combination of McFarland, Kennard, and Kirkpatrick.  And then this happened.  Alright McFarland... have fun playing for Stoops and co. while we trash your defense for the next four years.

So, what are your thoughts on who Mack has left on the recruiting board.  Devon Kennard is done with his visits and his decision has pretty much come to USC and Texas.  He's a powerhouse defensive end.  I'm not so sure how confident I feel about him coming to Austin, though. Pete Carroll has a lot of pull with those western recruits... not to mention good recruits in general.  However, the Muschamp factor may come into play with Kennard.  Seeing him line up on the other side of a stronger Okafor in a few years could be magical.  This one is a toss-up.

The other major prospect I'm high on is Dre Kirkpatrick.  I don't need to speak much about his game.  Think of Duane Akina's dream cornerback and you'll get Dre.  While I don't know as much about this corner, I do know he's a 'Bama kid and we have a certain defensive coordinator/head coach in-waiting that has Auburn ties.  I also know Kirkpatrick is taking his official visit to Austin on January 23rd, which is very close to the signing date.  There's a lot of potential as far as the recruiting goes.  The only downside is that he is from Bama and two of his top schools are Alabama and Auburn.  He's also looking at Florida, but one can only cross their fingers that he won't end up in Gainesville.  My gut feeling is that if he wants to leave his homestate, he'll commit to Texas.  But he could very well end up at a Bama school.  I don't feel too good about his case... but you never know.

Any additional information about these two guys would be much appreciated along with your opinions.  Also, does anyone know about Craig Loston's status.  He never really looked at Texas unitll he withdrew his commitment to Clemson, so I never had much faith in the kid.

Here's to a strong last push in recruiting, a throttling of the Buckeyes in Arizona, and to the fact that it's 12:19 a.m. on December 26th and OU (and McFarland!) STILL SUCKS!!!

Other recruits

We are going after a DE prospect named Tevin Mims out of Round Rock (Stony Point). 3 star, 6 foot 4, 230 lbs. Stock has risen as of late.

Personally, I think Kirkpatrick is Alabama all the way, regardless of what he has stated.

Loston has said he has it narrowed down to Texas A&M (I know he decommitted from there a long time ago, but apparently he took a visit there recently and enjoyed it) and LSU, and his coach has been quoted as saying he is pretty much locked in on LSU. I wouldn’t get your hopes up for him.

We are also in the running for Jarvis Jones, 4 star LB from Georgia. I don’t know much else.

Texas still has a ton of talent coming in.

Looking at what is coming into Austin as far as the def front is concerned the 40 Acres still has an abundent of talent on its way. Of course more would always be nice but I am not worried. They still have a good lb class and a few def lineman coming so we will be able to re-stock. The only question with that talent is whether or not it can play immediately. Mack and CO will find the talent they need to play at a high level as they do every year.

I agree

… And with Muschamp manning the defensive helm I’m not as worried about the number of five stars we’re getting (like it matters anyways). As long as you give him speedy, talented athletes, he’ll find a way to use them.

I wouldn’t mind seeing one more good one commit, though.

I felt better about McFarland than I did about anyone else, and he’s (apparently) going to OU.

Kennard looks like a decent possibility, and I’d love to see the guy in burnt orange.

But the hard truth is that Mack’s refusal to push hard for kids who don’t bleed burnt orange means UT could very easily not get any more recruits in the 2009 class.

yup

I’m not surprised about this at all. In fact, I had a bad feeling about this guy so I’m not surprised he has chosen OUsucks…. makes sense.

Ain’t got a good feeling about Kirkpatrick either, but not as bad (I don’t think he’s going to OUsucks lol, I’d say ’bama). Loston is definitely out of the picture and I think LSU.

Just like I thought from the beginning… I’ve had a decent feeling about Kennard through this though.

Kirkpatrick is all Bama. Has been for awhile. He’s just enjoying the attention at this point.

So who are the offers still out there? McFarland’s gone, leaving Kennard, Jones, Kirkpatrick, and Loston, but I don’t know who else has received an offer from UT. I see that Tevin Mims lists UT among his favorites, but there’s no offer reported at this time, although Muschamp is listed as his recruiter.

Mims offer

probably depends on whether Kennard commits or not.

Also, I’ll add that I think it’s great that two of UT’s top recruits are big risers right now. Gilbert is doing more and more to challenge for the #1 QB recruit label, and Okafor has been a machine, earning his fifth star fairly recently. Even if UT does not get Kennard, Okafor has the potential to be all-world. The amazing thing would be to have a 2010 lineup involving both those guys lining up outside some great young DTs who have earned their stripes through baptism by fire, like Johnson, Howell, Randall, and Humphrey. Heck, of course we wouldn’t want to count out any of those two- and three-star guys the team has recruited over the past few years either, as guys like McCoy and Gideon have shown us.

Sorry for all the consecutive posts, but here are the guys on the target list who have not committed to other schools:

Devon Kennard (offered, recruited by Kennedy/Muschamp)
Dre Kirkpatrick (offered, recruited by Muschamp/Akina)
Craig Loston (offered, recruited by Applewhite)
Christine Michael (no offer, recruited by Applewhite)
Jarvis Jones (offered, recruited by Muschamp)
Tevin Mims (no offer, recruited by Muschamp)
Marquise Goodwin (no offer, recruited by Kennedy)

This are the only ones listed on Rivals who haven’t committed anywhere but are on any UT coach’s target list.

jrod that link isn’t around any longer so what did Dre exactly say about Brown and Co.

by kcmorse on Dec 28, 2008 8:15 PM CST reply actions

the link works for me...

Basically he said, that he has no clear favorite right now…He likes Alabama because of Saban(when asked he said he would not consider Bama if Saban was not there)…he likes Florida because they have a lot of energy on the field and they are ‘wild’….he likes texas a lot too, because Coach Brown and Coach Muschamp always show him a lot of love…and Muschamp was the first coach who offered him a scholarship(“he told me I could be somebody”)…

The decision, he says, will come down to his mom and dad. They will accompany him on all college visits and he says that ’his mom will tell him things from the heart and he trusts their opinion.

Hopefully Mack doesn’t screw this up we need another solid blue chip right now. Hopefully he shows the parents love.

by kcmorse on Dec 28, 2008 9:59 PM CST reply actions

Cuz we all know...

it was Mack’s fault we lost the other recruit. He must be the worst recruiter in CFB to have handled McFarland that way. I can’t believe he fucked it up so badly.

I think he should take a page from Boob Stoops – sit down and watch a crappy movie with the kid’s mom.

That’ll learn ’em!!!

I’m thinking Mack Brown was Jerry Maguire to Bob Stoops’ Bob Sugar. Calvin Howell = Rod Tidwell.

He sounds like a hmm!

Jamal Charles! Hopefully he produces like Jamal did!
