Jai Lucas to announce decision tonight
Trips Right speculates that there is a chance that when Florida transfer Jai Lucas (the son of John Lucas and brother of the former Baylor and Oklahoma St. star, John III) announces his decision tonight, he will land at Texas. Lucas would be eligible next fall, filling a large hole at point guard for the Longhorns, who currently don't have any recruits for the 2009 or 2010 classes at that position.
UPDATE: awiggo--Orangebloods.com is reporting that Lucas will be a Longhorn. Welcome Jai!

Rivals Info
Since this guy has blazed on to the scene from out of nowhere (at least to me), here is a link to his Rivals recruiting info.

This is good news!

Cautious
Lucas originally chose Florida over Kentucky out of high school but elected to transfer after just a single season in Gainesville. Jai is listed at 5-11 but is probably an inch or two shorter. His size alone makes me hesitant. He did start his entire freshman season at UF and averaged 8.5 points and 2.2 assists
If Lucas chooses Texas, then I will of course embrace him. However, if he doesn’t, I won’t lose sleep either. Mason is not a true point guard but a servicable one and one that could excel with another season and the additions of some outstanding freshman scorers.
Also, if Lucas comes to Austin and J’Covan Brown finally enrolls at UT, then we will have a scholarship problem next season. We are currently at 12 scholarship of a possible 13. The additions of Lucas and Brown minus the departures of Connor, AJ, and Damion make 11. But we also have three incoming freshman (Bradley, Williams, and Hamilton). That would make 14 and one too many. Something has to give—think a transfer or not both Brown and Lucas joining the ’Horns.

Posting on a second board indicating that Lucas is expected to choose Texas.
The more I think about it, Jai would help more in 2010 than in 2009. Next season would be Mason’s senior one and with the addition of Bradley and Hamilton to the starting lineup and Ward and Balbay off the bench, the back court is in good shape.
But in 2010, Mason would be gone for sure and Hamilton likely to have moved on to the NBA and possibly even Bradley, who knows. Lucas could start in 2010 along side Daniel Bejarano and Bradley in the backcourt.
Last, should Lucas chose Texas, he would not be eligible until the end of the fall semester. Basically, he could start playing after finals conclude in December 2009.

Looking the team next year looks pretty deadly!

J'Covan Brown
As I stated earlier, this would present a scholarship problem should J’Covan Brown ever make it to Texas.
After this, I have to assume that Brown will never be a Longhorn.

I've gotta believe this is good news
As a Kentucky fan, I was following the Lucas recruiting pretty intently, and was disappointed to see him end up with Florida. To reiterate the other posters, the primary reason for his transfer was an increasing shift to Nick Calathes being the primary ballhandler, and Lucas felt that ’09 recruit Kenny Boynton would further take away his PT at the 1.
From what I remember of him at UF, he never really took control of the 1 spot, as Calathes ran the team more often than not. He was very quick, and a good spot shooter, but often got lost driving into the lane. He was also a tenacious defender. However, Florida was a very young team last year, and I was a bit surprised that Lucas didn’t become a more integral player than he turned out to be.
Nevertheless, he was still a top 100 recruit, and he’s definitely got the skills to help out/start for an elite team. His height, which AW cited as a concern, can’t be too damaging, as Rick has coached up two sub-6’ers in Abrams and Augustin; last I checked, those two didn’t turn out too badly. He adds much needed depth to our guard rotation, particularly with Abrams leaving after this year. He should also immediately provide more scoring threat than any of Mason, Ward and Balbay starting next year. I, too, believe this means J’Covan Brown is never stepping foot on a basketball court.
Tenacious defender?
I hope you’re right, because I’ve also heard pretty much the opposite about his defense.
His dad lives in Houston, so I think he’ll be much more comfortable in Texas by default. As y’all recall, his older bro played for Oklahoma State, and made a big shot for them in the tourney against St. Joseph’s.
Unlike Brown, I haven’t heard any negative things about Lucas as far as academics and attitude. Both Barnes and his daddy will put him in the right place.
