I don't care that much about this story....

To me we are spending a lot of time on a kid we didn’t get, who apparently is kind of a drama queen and a mam’s boy. Let him enjoy Norman.

I want Kennard, and Kirkpatrick. Lets pick them up and Introduce them to a guy named Gilbert and a beast named Okafor – let them hook up with the best 3 Offensive linemen in this year senior class from Texas on say Jan 5th around 6 pm or so.

Tell them to wear something orange and enjoy the show as we stomp the Buckeyes on our way to a Top 2 finish for 2009. And if they are lucky, they keep their mouth shut, listen, learn, and give everything they have, then Maybe they can join the rest of the members of the 2nd winningest program in NCAA history as it begins its National Championship run next year.

Well done!

Can’t talk about recruits, so this is probably about as good as we’re going to get. A head coach calling out a newspaper, hopefully this side of the story will finally generate some press.

Curious

Would Texas present to the NCAA any violations they may have on another team, specifically from the university that shall not be named?

Why would he want to choose TX after all this, the kid is probably embarrased as shit. What his family should do is save face and move to Mobilehoma!

by kcmorse on Dec 29, 2008 8:11 PM CST reply actions

I think he’s already hung Thayer out to dry by stating he didn’t know how he received the copy of his English paper. If he says anything else, he’s going against his momma. What if mom has a Come-to-Jesus moment, realizes she’s screwed her son over…and blows OU outta the water?
I know it’s not gonna happen but I do feel bad for him. After following his recruitment this past year, I doubt he asked for this or brought this on himself in any way. Seems like a good kid in a bad situation that got worse when his family decided they needed to go into pockets…

This should be a very interesting week for JM.

He’s in San Antonio with his peers preparing for the Army All-American bowl Saturday, which is usually a pretty fair game itself, especially if you have any interest in recruiting.

We’ve seen from the video intro with Howell and Whaley that the Texas commits there are well aware of this situation and it’s probably one of the topics of general conversation in what is a very macho and achievement oriented atmosphere.

Some tough kids. I was looking up the date on the game when I came across this Army promo story on Xavier Nixon out of North Carolina. Both his parents are army, his father now in Afghanistan, and when Xavier was younger and growing up, both his parents were drill sergeants. Tough in its own way.

What I’m saying is that JM is going to encounter some things which might challenge him and his manhood long before he hits the field.

Would players feel comfortable with a teammate that will complain about behavior that he does not approve of…i.e. alcohol and girls romancing each other? I would be skeptical of having someone like that on my team.

I think his disapproval was part of the spice added to his school paper. I’m betting he was there, enjoyed himself, probably did a few things he wouldn’t want his mother to know, then wrote a paper that he intended more for his mother’s benefit than to accurately portray the party events and his participation.

However...

Chuck Carlton might want to proofread his column prior to release…

The piece, by writer Thayer Evans, detailed a wild party hosted by Texas fans in Dallas, which McFarland attended. It also reported the offer of an interest-free low to McFarland’s mother,…

What the hell is an interest free “low”?

" Washington focuses its bailouts on people who take showers before going to work rather than on those people who need a shower after they work. "

That's not really what the original story said imho.

I didn’t read it that way.

From the original Thayer story in NYT:
This is near the start of the story:

McFarland’s mother, Kashemeyia Adams, said she received numerous offers, including one for an interest-free loan for a former classmate, if her son were to choose Texas.

In the final page there’s this follow up about the classmate:

Earlier this month, a former classmate called Adams and asked if she would coax her son into attending Texas. If so, a banker had promised the former classmate any type of loan.

Nowhere does it say the loan is to Adams or for her. You come out of the sentences thinking that’s the logical conclusion, but it is not by any close reading. There’s no connecting sentence saying the former classmate would give the money to her. None. This is very carefully constructed and not a function of direct quotes; it’s all conveniently paraphrased. And this is Thayer’s work, not the moma’s per se.

by whills on Dec 30, 2008 1:51 AM CST up reply actions

Thayer, Momma, Carlton

It’s all ambiguous heresy at this point. He said / she said / they said. I, quite frankly have had enough of the story.

But seriously, folks

I have opined on this site before that Mack’s class, and refusal to run up the score, help us get the kind of high quality kids we want in our program. This was based on the idea that classy kids come from classy parent(s). This has nothing to do with race or economic status. Class is class.
Now we have a situation where it seems that an apparently classy kid somehow achieved that state without the benefit of a classy Mom. All I can do is wish him the best, except for a certain Saturday in October.

What about next year?

This Thayer Evans for the last 2 years has managed to coincidentally find a highly sought after recruit, who at the last minute picked some other school. In the coming months we need to discover who he has latched onto and take preventive measure to avoid his achieving a trifecta. Also there has been talk of his being on the Houston Chronicle staff. I searched the Chronicle website and found over 60 articles by him, none sports related, all covering minor local stories. I have not seen anything in the Chronicle about this story. Yesterday, I went on the blog of Joseph Duarte who covers the Horns for the Chronicle and merely asked his take on Evan’s “hatchet job.” He didn’t even print my question, and if you have seen his blog, he needs all the reader comments he can get. I will ask Richard Justice a similar question, since he is a UT grad, but since he hasn’t mentioned the story I assume they have been told not to comment about a fellow “journalist.”

by OBdoc on Dec 30, 2008 3:29 PM CST reply actions

Interesting hobby you have there, doc.

There is something similar in both stories. Each of the recruits and his mother sits down at the table (kitchen) and has this time-period to hash out where he’s going, each listing the schools, the good and bad points for each. In each, all the competing schools are whittled down to two: Texas and Colorado, Texas and OU.

In each story there is a single mother, with no ready male counterpart that is a part of the conversation (not JM’s uncle nor Scott’s uncle). There is no HS coach’s input. No serious point-counterpoint. You don’t get the whole, in-depth conversation, just peeks here and there.

In each, a decision is reached and there is no reflective period, no other opinion allowed to enter into it.

Then, calls are immediately made to inform the respective coaches and schools of the choice. The End.

Very formulaic in this respect. No suggestion of how much writer is injecting into the conversation; he appears as a witness only, according to the way his story flows.

So, out of high profile 5-stars being recruited in this region, single dominant parent, probably poor to some degree: you should be able to narrow that down to a small number relatively quickly.

by whills on Dec 31, 2008 10:52 PM CST up reply actions

Follow up

I just asked Richard Justice for his “take” since the Chronicle does not seem to be covering the controversy. He merely responded that he (1) believed the article accurately reflected the family’s feelings, but (2) didn’t agree with the assessment of Mack Brown and his staff. I guess I am not surprised that he won’t criticize someone on the staff (even though Evan’s position on the Chronicle is apparently not in sports). I am more surprised that the Chronicle does not seem to be wanting to have anything to do with the whole controversy, since controversy sells newspapers. It will be interesting to see if Evans remains with the Chronicle.

"Only angry people win football games." --DKR

by OBdoc on Dec 30, 2008 4:18 PM CST reply actions

There is also the chance they are doing a story on this.

In which case, if Justice isn’t doing the story but knows that it is being done, he would defer until he could get something from the writers, or else stall. If you hear something official and bland tomorrow, that could be an indication. With the Texas’ and OU’s respective games next week, they have some time to work on this, looking for a publishing date no earlier than the big Sunday edition.

It would surprise me if they didn’t do a story. But they may have to get their house in order.

In dimecoverage’s round-up for 1-1-09, there is a cite to a story in the Lufkin paper. They said within it that story that Thayer had been asked to comment but there was no response. He doesn’t seem to be talking to anyone one.

The fact that the story was “spiced” indicates that JM was not consulted or questioned about it at the time and JM’s mother obviously believed it. Then Mayer took it as gospel. That’s a problem.
