Hatred for Horns bubbling up all over Big 12
With the recent UT-ou-TT-BCS 3-way tie controversy, it is very pleasing to see that most of the country is on our side. ESPN did a poll and found that people througout the nation voted UT over ou 60%-40% to get the nod to go to the Big 12 title game (the US truly is a BURNT ORANGE NATION!). This is awesome since, traditionally, I have found that the country is usually very anti-Texas. Looking at other SB Nation blogs and message boards, however, I have seen very strong anti-Texas, pro-ou sentiments. Specifically the Tech, Nebraska, and K-State (of all schools) blogs. It baffles me to no end that the Big 12 is so anti-Texas. The oklahomo spooners beat everyone just as much as we do (if not more so), are extremely arrogant (like us, only a lot less classy), run up the score on opponents, have been to the Big 12 Title game 7 times and won 5 in the past 13 seasons, and seem to always find a way to the National Championship game every year. Let's face it, in the history of the Big 12 so far the sooners are the evil NY Yankees while the Longhorns are the loveable Boston Red Sox. So I ask, why all the sooner sympathy? Why does it seem like all the other Big 12 schools are patting the sooners on the back, wishing them well? Shouldn't the conference be more behind us? I find this anti-Texas campaign very disturbing and undeserving. In my opinion, Texas is the classiest school in the Big 12 and probably the country, and we represent the conference very well on the BCS stage (2-0 in BCS bowl games). Sure we bash ou no matter what, and have pretty big rivalries with A&M and Tech, but we are extremely respectful to all other schools. I am not naive and realize that the small and middle size schools will always hate us because of our success, power, and influence. But why so much Texas hate?

Warning
Drewmonsta: Both the ‘oklahomo’ and ‘Bradford likes men’ comments are not just juvenile; they’re against community guidelines. Trash the Sooneers all you want. Do it without gay-bashing, though—the lowest form of rival takedown.
And do not, ever, try to justify your own trash talk by saying that the Aggies do it. The point of being superior someone else is lost if you can’t actually rise above them.

Arrogance
Probably because many UT students and alumni have a sense of entitlement. UT is to the Big 12 as SMU is to Conference USA. That being said, we’re still the best.
P.S. I haven’t seen or heard “t.u.” in a while, I wonder what the reason for that might be (haha).

I'm not sure if it is widespread
But I guess I can theorize about some of the hate we’re receiving.
First off, we weren’t expected to challenge seriously for the Big 12 title, much less the national title. Teams like Mizzou, Kansas, Texas Tech, etc. thought gleefully that this would be the year they wouldn’t have to deal with a strong Texas team. We proved everyone wrong, and Mizzou and KU particularly have fallen back to the wayside. That’s going to make some fans unhappy. Nebraska fans still blame all of Texas for the formation of the Big 12 and the subsequent shift of power to the South.
Secondly, we happen to have wealthiest athletics program in the country and we not only stole Auburn’s defensive coordinator (again), we made him our head coach in waiting. People don’t like seeing the rich get richer.
However, I don’t know if there’s significant “OU over Texas” sentiment. In fact, I think the vast majority of football fans have agreed that Texas got screwed over. But there will always be haters, even if you don’t necessarily do anything wrong. Comes with the territory.

Point well taken.
I’m not sure what the cause for the dislike is either. It may be loyalty to the old Big 12 vs the SWC (keep in mind that we are outnumbered 8 to 4 in that regard). Also in the Nebraska Corn Nation blog there is a reference to UT throwing its weight around at the time of the formation of the Big 12. I don’t know what that was about or why it would lead to continuing resentment. Or it could be just that Texans, especially successful, and proud ones, are disliked around the country. Or maybe we can just blame Texan Goerge Bush, since everything else is “his fault”.

Partial qualifiers
Since I’m old enough to remember this, Nebraska resentment centers around Texas putting their foot down on the subject of partial qualifiers. Perhaps someone can correct me, but these are basically recruits who don’t meet all of the academic qualifications for enrollment, but can attend school on scholarship. they don’t play for the first year and if they get good grades, they then become eligible. As I recall, Nebraska especially was very fond of partial qualifiers and was quite po’d when Texas took the stance that the new conference shouldn’t accept them and got their way (We are Texas, after all). They’re still a little cranky about it. read more here
Incidentally, I also recall Roy Williams at Kansas making some comment about Texas not being much of an addition in Basketball. I’ve hated him ever since. Snide bastard

Nebraska's fabled walk-on program didn't survive the Big 8 for long, either.
I read something this year about how they’re trying to resuscitate it once more. It’s an emotional scar and Texas gets some of the blame. Breaking their long winning streak at home might be in there, too, somewhere near James Brown. hehehe and my gloating.

I’m not sure why the Big 12 morons can’t just let Texas play OU for the Big 12 Championship. Not like Mizzou could argue they should be in there, regardless of the north & south division. The South was so heavy this year anyway, I say let the true “winners” play each other and we would have a true champion.

when many refer to someone’s sexuality as a way of bashing. You certainly aren’t the first to use it in that context, but it’s sort of ironic to call us classy and then use something like that.
As far as the hatred for UT in the Big12, I think it’s just us using the “if you aren’t with me, you’re against me” logic. It’s just an over-the-top assumption. Besides, you also have to consider that many of the coaches in the Big12 are Stoops affiliates.

Speaking as a Tech fan, I can speak in general terms as to why Red Raiders don’t have a problem wishing OU well and being somewhat happy UT is out of this barring a few scenarios. Especially at DTN…
First, OU fans don’t come to the Tech blog site and try to completely discredit everything about Tech from the fans, to the academics, to the football team, to city, whatever. This season a few BON regulars made a habit of coming over to DTN and being punks. All season. We expect it from Aggie fans because they are Aggie fans. Not so much from Texas fans.
Secondly, and probably more accurately, Texas – as a poster alluded to above – has the biggest and best of everything in athletics. Your pockets are infinitely deeper than anyone else’s in the conference. It appears to outsiders that you normally get your way or buy your way and when you don’t, as in this year’s BCS, it makes a lot of people pretty freaking happy.
Part of it is fans in Texas were either raised as UT fans or they weren’t. I come from a very long line of Tech alumns and it was sort of bred into me to hate orange. Not to I actually was a massive OU fan in the Big 8 days, so it’s hard for me to work up the same amount of “hate” towards them as UT.
A possible final reason Tech fans are displeased more so than normal is that we beat you guys this year in the game of the year. Yet many UT fans don’t want to give credit where credit is due in regards to Tech earning that win. Yes, you made a great comeback and our hats were off to you guys for that. But we also had a pretty fancy comeback as well and that somehow gets lost by UT fans. Or it seems to.
Why do the other teams hate you? Dunno…maybe just because you’re Texas.

I don't understand some of your arguments
First of all, the vast majority of Texas fans don’t jump over to yalls blog just to raise hell and that goes both ways. It doesn’t really matter to me that Tech, OU and aTm fans jump over here, its an open forum. To hate Texas anymore because of a few people that do is just kinda dumb, but whatever to each his own.
I understand point #2, excuse my baseball reference, but its a Yankees type of deal, everybody loves it when the team with the highest salary loses, etc.
Your argument about being raised a UT fan or not just seems stupid. The same could be said for a&m or Tech, or even OU (coming from North Texas, the OU population is fairly even with the Texas population), it is kind of regional depending on where you are in the state.
And last about yall beating us. I don’t discredit Tech’s victory or the amazing drive that yall had or any of that. It was obvious that Tech deserved to win the game, by outplaying us for 3 quarters, the part you don’t see is that in the eyes of a Texas fan, we “should” have won that game. We had the game, Colt’s heisman trophy, a Big 12 championship and a National Championship bid in the arms of our true freshman DB…and he dropped it. While there were other factors that led to yalls victory, that is the one that will stand out in the minds of most Texas fans. When we think of that game we’ll think, “WE lost the game and gave Tech the game”. I’m sure that when yall think of that game , you’ll see Crabtree’s TD and think “WE won the game and took it from Texas.”
Its just different ends of the spectrum

I understand (and completely expect) everything you've written
but it seems OU has been far more offensive than has Texas in the “normally get what you want” department.
1) OU benefited in 2000 from Miami being unjustly snubbed by the CG, essentially (in my eyes) giving them their only title of this era. Without that gift, Stoops has one of the worst records in BCS history.
2) OU unjustly went to the Championship game in 03 after badly losing the Big XII title game.
3) OU unjustly goes to the Big XII title game (and most likely the NCG) in 2008.
4) OU regularly self-imposes scandals and sanctions involving paying players, steroids, spying, and all forms of cheating imaginable in both Football and Basketball, and yet never seems to suffer any consequences.
Seriously, other than winning a lot, what has UT ever done? I know we’re the elitists of the Big XII, and I understand the hatred that necessarily must be incurred, but why the love for OU? They’re just as arrogant as we are, but they’re uglier and less likable.

I think you summed up my argument a lot better than I did. Texas and ou are the current football giants of the Big 12. Everyone will inevitably hate both of us. But, given a choice (like the present situation), why not gnash your teeth at oklahoma? As you said, we are both arrogant and snobby, but they are a lot uglier.

Apology
Don’t want to offend anyone, just taking shots at ou. Believe me, I’m open minded, especially after living here in Austin for the last 4 years. Sorry if I broke any guidelines. saying t.u. and the reverse horns is dumb though. But I digress. The point of my post is this: I’m a recent graduate from UT. In the last several years, thanks in large part to Mack Brown, UT has become a culture of class. We view ourselves as extremely respectful to other teams and schools (minus ou, and sometimes A&M). I just find it strange that a lot of schools see the situation as UT whining because the big dog isn’t getting what it wants this year, and trying to change the tie-breaker rules to benefit the Horns in the future. At most, a lot of Big 12 schools should be apathetic to the whole situation since they aren’t involved. If we use this situation to highlight the Big 12 tie-breaker rules, it will most likely help a smaller school in the future. But who knows, maybe it’s all in my head. Again, sorry for the offensive comments. They are supposed to be poking fun of ou, not gay-bashing. I’ll watch myself in the future. I’ll correct myself, “mobilehoma sooners,” and “sam bradford hates Jesus.”

This gay blogger thanks you
About the Texas hate … I imagine the lesser lights of the Pac 10 hate USC, the underachievers of the Big 10 hate Michigan, and so it goes. Coming from Tech country (with sibling alums) I always thought Tech hated the ags nearly as much as we did. My older brother told me the Tech lore that the statue of the Red Raider is so positioned that the horse’s ass points toward College Station. (Guess it could just as readily be pointing to Waco.) I guess we didn’t win any Big XII fans by upsetting NU so often, or crushing CU in ’05, or coming back on KU in ’04. Good thing is, as you note, America at large loves us. I see UT caps and shirts all the time here in NYC — evidence that we are the best-merchandised program in the BCS.

I think some people hate us for the reasons...
…implicitly outlined in last month’s Texas Monthly. It takes a fantastic look at how Mr. Dodds started the arms race at Texas and created the juggernaut that makes so many people jealous. If you haven’t seen it, do yourself the favor of checking it out.
Obviously, the organic extension of our powerful brand, and the opportunities it bears, is that we get to put things on our resume that no one else in the Conference can even come close to approaching. Who else has modern highlights as impressive and iconic as our back to back Rose Bowl wins in the final seconds? That’s better than any OU record. Nothing is as memorable in all of college football for many people (Orangebloods or not) as how Vince beat USC. That’s bound to create some jealousy and animosity. Or, for that matter, who can do things as New York Yankees-esque as locking up a coordinator for $900,000 per year for presumably at least a few years? (I totally agree with doing everything in our power to keep Coach Muschamp, don’t get me wrong…it’s just that if you’re Iowa State or Baylor looking at that deal it must make you pretty sick to your stomach to know you have no shot of competing with that).
Further, I also believe a lot of the hatred is that other people in the Big 12 see us as separating from OU but want us and the Land Thieves to tear each other apart so they can sneak up and try to topple us. (Tech had maybe there once-in-a-decade chance this season. Missouri has been threatening for a couple seasons…but always winds up shitting the bed).
All in all, I guess I’m just saying that jealousy, and that fact that we make the entire college football landscape play by our rules is bound to make a lot of people hate us…even if we don’t run up scores.

If you will recall several years back, their athletic director made the comment about thinking that the Big XII needed revenue sharing. His specific reference was to Texas and I think they had a coach or some fans crying about the fact that we have more money than them, blah blah blah.

Most football programs lose money.
Apparently only the top 25 teams that regularly go to bowls profit while the perennial doormats suffer losses. In order to counter that, genius athletic directors at these weaksauce schools throw more money at their problem, creating a cyclical deficit spending. He is probably bitching about that.
