Auburn finally cans Tuberville

After almost firing him a few years ago, he went undefeated.  Now he's getting fired after one losing season.  It probably had a lot to do with Alabama currently being undefeated in Saban's second year than one bad season.  I'm guessing he'll get another job in Div-1.  What do you think about his job prospects, and are we sure Coach Boom is locked up no matter how much money Aurburn gives him?

Muschamp move looks even better

Gotta believe our own DC would be target numero uno for that spot given his highly successful tenure at Auburn and SEC experience in general. This emphasizes the importance of the timing, as waiting even a few more weeks could have been costly to our chances of retaining the guy.

good point

at first i thought we were acting a little too hastily but the more time that passes it looks like we did the right thing

Leach?

They could get Mike Leach. I would be happy.

That would be interesting

Washington tries to get Leach, he goes to Auburn. Washington hires coach Auburn just fired?

Man,

the irrationality of SEC schools is almost awe-inspiring. “If you was a moron, you might even admire it.”

Auburn had beaten Alabama 6 years in a row.

If you're Mike Leach

you make sure you get seen on a plane to Auburn. After all, we don’t really know that UW had him in for an interview. The crafty pirate could have just bought a ticket for Seattle out of his own pocket. It would be a good investment, once Tech tries to renew his contract.

He did interview at UW

and is on his way back this for the final interview, according to Dan Patrick.

I know, it was really a joke

But if you are a hot coach looking to get a raise, it would make sense to make your current employer think you might leave for greener pastures. See Charlie Weis and ND after his first narrow loss to USC. Get ting your agent to spread rumors is a time-tested way to get more money. I figured Leach could make Tech pay for not renewing his contract last year.

Tech92

Possibly getting too far ahead, but what are your thoughts if Leach does leave? Who might replace him?

by BrooklynHorn on Dec 3, 2008 6:52 PM CST to parent up reply reply   0 recs

I'm not Tech92...

…but wouldn’t Ruffin McNeill be a logical choice, particularly if they want to stay in-house?

by kjm017 on Dec 3, 2008 8:24 PM CST to parent up reply reply   0 recs

It would be a logical choice

but I don’t think that happens. Texas Tech is not the type of school where you can hire someone safe (i.e. Kansas State’s recent hire). I’m a firm believer in taking a chance with a guy that you hope is there for a while. There’s also talk that Briles is an option (graduated from Texas Tech) although IMO he doesn’t seem like the kind of guy that would coach Baylor for 1 year and then leave.

What is Auburn thinking?

While this season hasn’t been good for Auburn I don’t see why Tommy is being fired now. Sure, from the outside looking in the stories make him sound like someone who isn’t easy to work with, but at the end of the day he has a good record for the conference and keeps them in the upper tier of the SEC. On top of that, how can you use this season as the nail in the coffin when he’s trying to install the spread offense, and he lost BOOM? I don’t think he was going to turn in a Championship run performance like Saban in the next few seasons, but who is so genius on the field and flashy to recruits that he’s going to take them from a winning team to a Champion? Mike Leach? How’s he going to recruit the South and go back to pass-first in a confernece with (slightly) better overall D than the Big 12? Someone from the NFL looking to jump? I just don’t get the timing? Again, don’t get me wrong, Tommy has a rep for being a bit of a prick and is more of a manager, but I think Auburn may be a bit shortsighted…unless they secretly have someone amazing coming in from the Sunday league…

I agree. I think he went 49-14 in the five years leading up to 2008, and then all of a sudden he’s canned? Raw deal, IMO. But Auburn’s not the Joneses in the SEC right now—’Bama and Florida are, and now Auburn and Georgia are going to try to keep up with impact hirings.

Stoops

He con go to Auburn for all I care. The sooner (lol) we get rid of stoops in the big 12 the better

i say go after paul johnson

he proved the flexbone can work against the 3rd best sec team, if they could buy him out it would be a great hire

by wishiwasalonghorn on Dec 3, 2008 11:40 PM CST reply reply   0 recs

Muschamp wont go back!

Would you want to recruit int that area with the resurgence of Bama, and againest the like of UF Florida ST and Georgia! I wouldnt. Auburn is and always will be the step child to Bama in that state. That is just how it is!

I think Tuberville could be a good pickup for Mississippi St. now that Croom is gone.
