Kennard to USC!?!
First the whole Jmac thing and now I read this on Rivals...
http://footballrecruiting.rivals.com/content.asp?cid=894448
While five-star defensive end Devon Kennard from Phoenix (Ariz.) Desert Vista will not be in San Antonio until Thursday, a source on the West squad trying to recruit Kennard to Texas said that despite a good visit to Austin that Kennard will be heading to Southern Cal. Kennard has taken official visits to Cal, Southern Cal and Texas and could be ready to make his decision soon.
Is it me or do we seem not to do well with these late committing recruits? I must admit I thought Muschamp would be a difference maker. My confidence is waning a little.

Time will tell...
I saw that article too, but I’ll wait….OB hasn’t come out with anything, have they?
Maybe he'll commit when Carroll visits...
“He said he’s expecting a visit from USC coach Pete Carroll in early January, and the same of Cal coach Jeff Tedford. Texas coach Mack Brown stopped by before Kennard visited Austin”.

What a strange sourcing statement...
" a source on the West squad trying to recruit Kennard to Texas".
By my count there are 5 of them. Why not just tell us who the player is?
probably tells you in the article, course that costs money. either that or maybe they’re afraid the texas coaching staff might be upset with a recruit letting slip information like this before all is said and done (basically there could be premature backlash against the recruit only driving him away, very similar to the jmac situation where someone claimed texas was backing off to document ncaa infractions when it doesn’t look like that might be the case).

That's all there is in the article
I hardly think that statement would produce a negative backlash. It’s just a fancy way of saying one of the Texas commits told the reporter he thinks Kennard is going to USC.
no, we do not do well
with late recruits. In fact, we do awful. Christian Scott is the only late commit I I can recall in the last five or six years.
I think Mack Brown and staff pick their targets early, make their pitch and get a yes or no. No being “I’m not ready to commit,” and almost none of those not ready’s ever pick UT. It must have something to do with the strategy/style/approach Mack & staff use.
I don’t think his recruiting philoslophy is bad. But the pattern does repeat. Over and over. Were I inclined to venture out where the branches get thin, I might suspect that those “not ready’s” have a hand out. But since I’m no tree climber . . . . .
Recruiting
Well if history repeats itself year after year Mack needs to come up with another strategy of late season recruiting!
Out-of-state Recruits
I fear each time we fail to land one of these out-of-state recruits Mack will lose confidence and completely abandon recruiting these guys. Hopefully, we can land Jarvis Jones or Kirkpatrick to put my fears to rest.
I know we usually like to keep it in state with recruiting. But why is it always so hard for us to get out of state recruits to Texas? USC never has a problem, Oklahoma never has a problem, neither does Georgia,Florida,Michigan,Notre Dame Etc. Out of all the powerhouses we hardly ever get any recruits from out of state why?
don't know for sure
Maybe we just use the least amount of resources in recruiting out of state? It seems all the concentration is on the state of Texas, so maybe other states look a LOT more out of state, due to strategy or necessity. (In other words, a state like Oklahoma might not have near the talent, but can also take advantage of Texas players getting to stay “close to home” but go to another football powerhouse if Texas or other state schools aren’t looking at them.)
Mack's Philosophy
He prefers the in-state guys, because he believes there is plenty of talent to fill a class. He is probably right, but in some cases depending on the position and the year you have to leave the state to fill a need. Why does it seem we don’t have as much success as other schools? I believe it is because those schools recruit many players out-of-state each year so of course they are going to sign more, they have more opportunities. We may seriously recruit 3-4 out of state guys a year where as those schools will go after 10-15.

I still say we are the best school out there in regards to keeping it in state only with USC in 2nd Florida 3rd
Nah, Michigan, Notre Dame, and sometimes Penn State and Michigan State raid Ohio quite a bit. Not to the extent that OU raids Texas, but that speaks more for UT’s ability to lock down in-state recruits than anything else. Seriously, guys like AP, Loston, and McFarland shouldn’t be leaving the state.

Nah, Michigan, Notre Dame, and sometimes Penn State and Michigan State raid Ohio quite a bit.
Michigan State gets nothing Ohio State wants. Penn State has taken one legacy recruit from Ohio in the last three years (father played there.) Michigan has taken two players that Ohio State has waned in the past two years.
Notre Dame does get one or two Catholic kids a year. Nothing really big, though. Ohio State has a 90% + hit rate for Ohio.
Assuming what “Ohio State wants” means players they offered, Penn State “stole” the following four- and five-star players tOSU offered:
Mike Zordich (2008)
Brandon Beachum (2008, offer rescinded)
Notre Dame “stole” these:
4* Dan McCarthy (2008)
5* Kyle Rudolph (2008)
Michigan “stole” these:
4* Kevin Koger (2008)
4* Justin Turner (2009)
That’s hardly “absolute lockdown.” Keep in mind, these are just the in-state guys tOSU offered, not all the ones they actively recruited, whether in or out of Ohio. Brandon Moore, for example, was a tOSU recruit, but chose Michigan. Looks like Tennessee has made some good thefts on Ohio State offers as well. Relative to the population of the state, it looks like Texas is no worse at keeping Texans in state than Ohio is at keeping Ohoia…Ohia…err, players from Ohio.

Mike Zordich (2008)
Brandon Beachum (2008, offer rescinded)
Zordich was the legacy. Beachum NEVER had an offer.
Notre Dame "stole" these:
4* Dan McCarthy (2008)
5* Kyle Rudolph (2008)
McCarthy was also legacy. Rudolph was a legitimate “take.”
Michigan "stole" these:
4* Kevin Koger (2008)
4* Justin Turner (2009)
Koger was a legitimate take. Turner was never going to OSU. Father/Him were UM fans. It didn’t matter who offered.
B. Moore also never had an OSU offer.
we dont need all these fancy out of state 5 star recruits
we do just fine staying in state, hell colt was a 3 star from bumfuck nowhere and look at him
Hotty Toddy and Hook'em Horns.
fancy? what does that even mean?
we need to recruit the best players that will do the best for texas..

More a southern perjorative, unfortunately, like “elite.”
by burntorangehorn on Dec 31, 2008 1:10 PM CST up reply actions
i mean all these high profile out of state guys that all want to go to usc and notre dame
we do just fine with guys from texas, kennard is just going to go to usc and either get lost on the depth chart or end up doing nothing, and even if he ends up being good, we got alex okafor and that is all we need. let him go, we dont need him
Hotty Toddy and Hook'em Horns.
I'd forget all about Kennard IF......
we were to get Jackson Jeffcoat next year!

That is not to say Kennard
doesn’t deserve his own respect. From what I’ve read, he’s a good kid and has tons of talent. I would love to have both but we must get at least one of them.

whats that saying? a bird in hand is worth two in the bush? it doesn’t quite apply, but still relevant.
you want the best talent you can have on your team, you can’t just say “oh well, we never needed you” to every 5* who snubs texas. you can’t say “well we didn’t really need you this year, we’ve got blah blah coming down the pipe next year,” because you don’t know if you’re going to get him next year, or what his state will be then.
you want the best you can get, year in, and year out.

This is slightly bit off topic
but this reminds me of what has happened to Emmanuel Moody. Drowned in utter oblivion

I'm afraid
Jeffcoat’s dad is a UH coach, on Sumlin’s staff (ex-OU & A&M asst). I am afraid of what this develop implies for his prospects going to UT.

Could be, but Tim Brewster’s kid didn’t end up going to Minnesota, and he wasn’t from Texas. A blue-chip recruit will more often than not choose a blue-chip program, and while I have hopes that Houston will ascend, they’re not there yet.
However, I do think that when we bust up the Big 12, Houston ought to be on the list for the new conference. SWC North: Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, Arkansas, Tulsa, TCU, SMU. SWC South: Texas, TAMU, Tech, LSU, and two out of four from Baylor, New Mexico, Houston, and Rice.
Yep…it’ll never happen.

CraigLoston
Anyone with a Rivals subscription or knowledge on this young man’s plans for college?
He seems awfully good….
Loston
Is down to LSU and A&M. Russel Shepard says he is going to LSU but kind of weird deal with him.
My guess is he goes to LSU (but I am not an expert my any means, this is just from what i have read)
Adopt-a-recruit: Devon Kennard DE
Phoenix (AZ) Desert Vista 6'3" 257lbs
recruits
or for that matter…. which way is Jarvis Jones leaning?
Jarvis Jones
Evidently has always like Florida, that was “his team” growing up. And for that reason they are supposedly the team to beat. But I just watched an interview in which he said it was still wide open. He talked great about Texas.
Seems to be down to Texas, Florida, and USC
Adopt-a-recruit: Devon Kennard DE
Phoenix (AZ) Desert Vista 6'3" 257lbs
Stay the course
We’re going to land 1 or 2 from time to time. We do well on the national stage & the players will come.
Notable Longhorn recruits from years ago now: Jeff Leiding (Oklahoma), AJ Jones (Ohio top RB at the time), Chris Sims (NJ). Now, the last one (Simms) had a lot of bad press, deserved or no, that any recruiter on the nat’l scene could show a prospect & scare him off of coming to Austin.
Lest we forget, Ricky W from California, Major from Louisiana.
What we do get from out of state is usually just fine.
The chances appear to be that Texas will get NONE of the big recruits who were remaining late in the game: McFarland, Kennard, Jones, Kirkpatrick, Richardson, Loston, Lynn, and Michael. I wasn’t expecting UT to grab all those guys, or even most of them, but even just one or two would’ve been nice to see. I guess ruling out the three RBs would’ve been fair, considering the promise to Whaley, but going 0/5 on the others kind of sucks.

I would agree burntorangehorn, we are going to get none of the 5 star players that have a slight interest in Texas. We are investing way to much interest as fans in seeing what happens then were just let down when they choose the other school over us. Though it would make sense for these guys to choose us because of our depth chart compared to the other schools, plus Mack and Co. like to get all players involved in the games whether if there a starter or not!
SEC Boys
All the recruiting talk here in Atlanta has Jarvis Jones going to Florida. Alabama getting Dre Kirkpatrick, however both players talk high of Texas and Muschamp. Keep in mind all blue-chip recruits talk high of Texas late in the recruiting season (probably because of our “shirtless lady parties”)
ah yes the lady parties
the ones with the ladies romanticizing eachother and diplaying freakiness with no regard. Such eloquent words…I mean they are parties of magnitude never seen before
I typically go to five or six of these a month.

To all those who took the wait and see...
yeah. It was false. IT interviewed him. He’s still undecided, but said a decision could be made “very soon”. Exciting, I know.
To all the others, you can calm down now.
just cause a person says they’re undecided doesn’t mean they are, and just because a person says they’re decided doesn’t mean they are.
i’ll wait till signing day to get worked up.
