Davey O'Brien voting ends 12/7!!! PLEASE VOTE FOR COLT RIGHT NOW!!!!
Hey Horns,
Please take a second and vote for Colt McCoy for the Davey O'Brien Award. This award honors the nation's top collegiate quarterback. The other two finalists this year are Sam Bradford and Graham Harrell. Fan voting counts for 5% of the total, so please do this to help ensure Colt keeps the monster lead he has earned ON THE FIELD. You can vote daily, and the website is: http://www.daveyobrien.com/fan/login.asp.
Vince Young won this in 2005, and Earl Campbell won in 1977 before it was exclusively a quarterback's award. I know we're all biased here, but I don't think anyone can argue with what Colt has done this year. Let's give him all the support we can.
While you're at it, the Heisman race from ESPN and Nissan is also extraordinary close, with Colt clinging to a slim lead over Sam Bradford. Please vote for Colt! The website is: http://promo.espn.go.com/espn/contests/theheismanvote/index

A Heisman win could push Colt toward leaving early BUT...
…there are TWO really big concerns Colt’s advisors have to make clear to him as he ponders entering the NFL draft. Now granted, he is an amazing college QB, but NFL scouts are notoriously narrow-minded and focused only a few things for the next level. Thankfully both for Colt as an eventual pro prospect, and for us as fans of him staying at Texas, him coming back for a senior season would give him time to completely address all of these issues:
SIZE
College football is quarterback-rich at the moment, and despite Colt’s amazing performance over his career at Texas, he’s neither as thick, nor historically durable as Tebow, Stafford, Freeman, etc. I think the people advising him have to make it clear to him that to be in the NFL as a QB (and not a receiver) Colt’s going to have to do his usual off-season thing of packing on at least another 15 pounds of muscle. We all know he’s a tough kid, but in the NFL the injuries could be much worse if he can’t beef up a bit. and when you’re QB goes down you’re inconsistent and lose (i.e. Cowboys, Patriots, yada yada).
STYLE/SCHEME
Colt has made a living off of short passes and nice scrambles this season. That said, the last time we sent a guy to the Sunday league who did that for us, it didn’t work out as people had hoped for. (Insert rant about Jeff Fischer’s nurturing of VY here). Anyway, we don’t run a traditional pro offense like some other schools, and that hurts Colt’s stock a bit. We’re even running “junk” according to some pundies. Colt will make the jump, but it’s common knowledge he’s working with a stripped-down offense after he couldn’t quite handle Greg Davis’ playbook last season (insert rant about 2007 OL, GD, etc here). Again, last year wasn’t all his fault, but it’s still in the back of scout’s minds. Colt’s stock can only rise from another season in which he proves he can run a more complicated offense than this years and still be efficient. He needs to make the defense worry about more. In short…he needs to show more of the long ball. (Repeat rant about GD here).
In any event, if he leaves after this season (Heisman or not) I wish him all the luck in the world, and hope that we’d roll the dice and start Gilbert as a true fresh.
