Texas Volleyball's Quest for the Final Four
It begins tonight at 6:30 at Gregory Gym against Lamar. If you can make it out, the Gazelles need our help.
Tonight against Lamar will probably be little more than a practice match. I expect Wichita State to dispatch Rice in the 4:30 game today. If that's the case, the Gazelles will draw a very tough 2nd round opponent, Wichita State. Wichita was 29-0 going into last weekend's conference tournament where they were upset. Single game tickets for this weekend went on sale today, 471-3333.
Next weekend is the regional at Gregory Gym. General admission tickets still available. Tickets for the regional

Coach says.....
Head coach Jerritt Elliott
On the home crowd: Our goal is to have this place sold out. We are expecting the Longhorn fans to come out and support our team, and if they haven’t been out here, then they need to come out and see the caliber of talent we have on this team.
Come on BON’ers there’s no football this weekend so let’s support the Big XII Champion Gazelles – who don’t have to worry about any silly tiebreaks as they start their post-season.

Nope, no football...
… just a de facto Big 12 second-place-ionship and something about a bunch of alligators rolling around in some dirty water. I’ll take the Gazelles over that, easy.

Saturday at 4:30
Game on against Wichita State. The Shockers let Rice take a game off them which gives me hope that we will sweep tomorrow afternoon. On a side note, there’s something really surreal about watching the volleyball/soccer moms in the wichita state crowd standing up giving the “shocker”.
The crowd tonight was really disappointing. Small and lame. I guess holiday parties and UT graduation don’t help with attendance. I hope we get a better turnout Saturday and especially next weekend.

Don’t sweat Wichita State any.
An old co-worker of mine from a year ago moved on to the newspaper in Wichita and has covered them a few times this year. They’re good for the Missouri Valley, but he said they’d run into a buzzsaw as soon as they saw a half-decent squad from a major conference — much less Texas.

I sweat every single game in the post-season
And fortunately so does Jerritt. He does a great job of keeping the team focused on “one match at a time” – particularly since the perplexing loss to OU this season. Last year’s tournament was littered with upsets so we have to stay focused.
Speaking of running into a buzzsaw – the scores from the Lamar game were 25-17 25-12 and 25-8. Very efficient performance by the team, and lots of playing time for the subs, so the Gazelles should have very fresh legs for this afternoon’s match.

Just as an example – last night #16 Kansas State was upset by unranked Santa Clara.

And the Austin regional is set....
UCLA against Texas. Oregon against (drumroll please…) IOWA STATE!. Iowa State takes down #6 seed Minnesota @ Minneapolis in 4 sets. Next weekend is a Pac 10/Big 12 showdown series.
I belive Texas’ Friday match will be at 6:30. Saturday’s regional final will be at 5:30 broadcast on ESPNU.

That's great news
Texas has been knocked out of the post-season by a Pac 10 team in 3 of the last 4 years (USC last year, Stanford in 2006 and 2004). I think this year is the year we break that curse. I won’t be surprised if Iowa State upsets Oregon, but I’d be just as happy if we take out two Pac 10 teams on our way to the Final Four.
Let’s hope attendance is better for next weekend. Barely over 1000 fans on Friday and Saturday? Come on guys, we can do better! The Gazelles deserve better.
