Texas Tech being Texas Tech
Apparently, Texas Tech fans are making and/or buying these shirts.
I can understand the "South Champions" part as there is a 3 way tie. I believe technically they are co-champs, but that is a minor quibble. The key to this shirt is that if you look at the top you can see "The Best Season Ever".
Even in the worst of weeks for Texas football, it is good to remember that we could be Texas Tech.

Yea what a bunch of losers
celebrating a pointless 11-1 season. We should’ve printed shirts that said “We’re going to cry about not going to a BCS game over Texas even though we beat them god I hate college football being happy about shit is pointless especially when you ONLY win 11 games I hate everything.” It might not fit.
How about instead of remembering that you aren’t Texas Tech or complaining that you aren’t Oklahoma you actually… celebrate? You guys had an amazing season. You are going to the Fiesta Bowl for a BCS game. You were a play or two away from going to the national championship. You have a young defense and a returning QB and you just secured Will Muschamp who you all seem quite enamored of. But why be happy when you can just be shadenfreaud about our historic season and make fun of us for being so fucking beneath you. Being unhappy is way cool so long as you’re better than everyone else.
This really was the best season ever, I really, truly enjoyed it more than any season prior. I hope that bothers you, I’m going to buy the t-shirt.

Misunderstanding
I never called Tech’s team losers although my post was vague and could lead to that inference. I am merely pointing out how good Texas has it.

The problem is that the shirt is a lie
Texas Tech is not the Big XII South Champions, Oklahoma is.
I don’t even see how it’s their best season ever, since they have won conference championships in the past:
Border Intercollegiate Athletic Association – 9 times (1937, 1942, 1947, 1948, 1949, 1951, 1953, 1954, 1955)
Southwest Conference – 2 times (1976, 1994)
In 1938, they went undefeated in the regular season.
Tech fans seem to have no sense of history.

Oklahoma isn't South Champion
It’s the Co-champ and the representative in the title game. If we’re playing semantics, might as well include the ones that ding OU.

Re:
Big XII South Championship was split three ways between Texas, Texas Tech, and Oklahoma. Oklahoma gets to go represent in the Big XII Championship. You guys received a trophy, too.
You seem to think one t-shirt reflects the fact that all Tech fans lack a sense of history. I doubt a t-shirt that said “Best season ever (at least since 1938)” would sell very well. Both ‘76 and ’94 were split championships as well. In 1994 we were 6-6. In ’76 we were 10-2. 1938 was great and all, I wasn’t alive, but we have more wins this year than we did then and that ended with a loss to St. Mary’s in the Cotton Bowl.
This really is one of the, if not the, greatest regular seasons Tech has ever had. I was born in 1983. I really could care less what happened in the Border Intercollegiate Athletic Association 50 years ago. I get no enjoyment from it. That was a long time ago.

If I get my dad this t-shirt for Father’s day, does it mean he really is the greatest Dad in the world? Some dude’s just trying to make a quick buck selling a commemorative t-shirt.

Tech is proud of their season
Nothing wrong with it.
by the1austin on Dec 5, 2008 10:35 AM CST reply actions 0 recs
Agree
There is nothing wrong with it. They should be proud and Texas fans should be proud of our season. At the same time, Tech’s “Best Season Ever” ends with them playing in the Cotton Bowl, getting no shot at Conference Title, and there coach interviewing at other schools.
All things considered, no matter how bad Texas has it, Tech has it much worse.
by JohnsonUT on Dec 5, 2008 10:44 AM CST up reply actions 0 recs
Their coach is just jacking up his price.
Leach should be lobbying for a BCS game instead of interviewing. He just rolled over.
And while he wasn’t looking, you can bet Art Briles was stealing everyone in sight.
by whills on Dec 5, 2008 6:44 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
True, it should have said “Best season ever, to date.” Tech will have plenty of opportunities in the future to have even better best seasons ever. We gotta start somewhere, right? 11-1 is nothing to scoff at. Any other year, 11-1 would be a shoe-in for the BCS. (see last year with 2 loss champion and 10-3 OU and UT). Especially all this considering the strength of the division this year.
True, UT has had many great years and a very rich tradition. But UT has quite an advantage with all the money, support, history, tradition, etc. Tech is 40 years younger without access to the texas land/oil money. We have also never had near the attention/support that others in the state have had. We have already overtaken one state “superpower” in A&m and are finally competing with the other big boys. It has taken time but it has been building slowly but surely. The program has been winning more and more consistently. We just need to sustain what we have done this year.
And just like Skinpatrol noted, the season as a whole this year has, in my opinion, been one of the most exciting and interesting years in a while (definitely in the Big12 if not the nation).

How Thoughtful of You
The point is that, for a 3-way tie/co-championship and not an actual championship, victory, #1 slot, to be your ‘best season ever’, your standards have to be pretty low.
Or perhaps it is the ‘best season ever’ just because you beat Texas?? Really guys?? I guess that would inherently set your standards back to high. Thanks for the complement Red Raiders!
by NYTexan on Dec 5, 2008 11:56 AM CST reply actions 0 recs
Yeah, that was actually giving Tech the benefit of the doubt that being a “co-champ” in a 3-way tie would not actually be grounds for the “BEST year EVER”.
Otherwise, Tech’s standards must be pretty low, like getting a knockoff mp3 player instead of an iPod for Christmas and declaring it the “BEST gift EVER”. You know you wanted the iPod! Who does that? Oh yeah….

So are we allowed to celebrate at all or do we just have to listen to you tell us how inferior we are when we do so? Sir?
by Skin Patrol on Dec 5, 2008 4:22 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
Of course you can celebrate.
11-1 is a good season for Tech.
Are we not allowed to be miserable that we were 2 computers or one catch away from a title shot? I could see your indignation if this was posted on a Tech blog. But here? Really? Why does this
a. Surprise you.
b. Matter to you.
?
by ctex80 on Dec 5, 2008 4:58 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
Who said you can’t be miserable?
Question back at you:
What on earth does Tech’s celebratory t-shirt have to do with UT not finishing higher than OU in the computers?
a) It doesn’t surprise you? This is a UT website and some guy posts a Texas Tech t-shirt trying to fact check the words on it and discussing how great it is not to be a Texas Tech team that just went 11-1 in what was one of the best seasons in school history. That’s a bit odd, don’t you think? There should be fanposts up about how great a season Texas had, not fanposts about how great you guys are relative to a team a lot of you find pathetic. I thought it was a surprising fanpost. And if they are angry fanposts (and you guys are entitled to a lot of anger, certainly) you’ve got better objects of hate than some fairly mild marketing campaign.
b) Doesn’t, this is what I do to avoid studying for finals. I procrastinate.
It’s a t-shirt, nothing more, nothing less. How many CFB t-shirts have you read that DON’T have some measured hyperbole on them? Did Texas have a great season because Tech is a shitty football program historically or did you have a great season because you’re 11-1 and going to a BCS game? I don’t think is good therapy for anybody.
by Skin Patrol on Dec 5, 2008 5:49 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
Fair question.
The Tech T-shirt merely gives us a frame of reference for our own expectations. The fact that another school could finish with the same record, in the same conference, and go to a lesser bowl, AND then see that as “the greatest season ever” is a nice frame into which we should put our expectations.
Texas DID NOT have a great season. A very good season no doubt. But not a great one, for either of the reasons you mentioned.
I don’t think anyone here “hates” the t-shirt. It was merely pointed out as a comparison of the expectations and perceptions of two programs.
To me the entire point is that while we are not happy with how our season turned out, we should count ourselves lucky that we can be disappointed in an 11-1 season.
by ctex80 on Dec 5, 2008 8:06 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
I know UT’s season has ended in a shaft, but how can you not call it a great season when the expectations were to be 2nd or 3rd in the south? Nobody can say that 11-1 (and being a few plays from 12-0) was not a great season, I don’t care how arrogant they are. OU’s and UT’s great seasons just happen to beat out Tech’s great season this year of so many great teams and individual players.

Skin Patrol
I mean this genuinely. Tech should be flattered by this. Do you think this would have been posted here if it pertained to Baylor or TCU?
This is a small sign that Texas is beginning to view Tech as a legitimate rival.

I appreciate you Brooklyn Horn and I wish I’d just said what you said early on: not a big deal. Because this is not.
Flattering but, if we’re being honest, Tech and UT ain’t rivals.
by Skin Patrol on Dec 5, 2008 5:52 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
A legit rival
A legit rival beats us more often than once every 7 years. I view all this as more of a sign that we are embarassed that we lost to Tech. I absolutely do think if we had lost to Baylor or TCU (unquestionably sub-Tech), there would be a similar reaction. It’s anger over a loss that 100% should not have occured. Tech is good, no doubt, but not a true rival of Texas.
by Texas Our Texas on Dec 5, 2008 7:05 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
nah
the world of college football moves quickly these days, and cares little for whatever prideful or arrogant claim we might make about our superiority over the Red Raiders. We just saw a three-year period that centered largely around the emergence of the Big East, and from it sprung rivalries between Louisville, WVa, and Rutgers. Competing for top-5 positions does that to conference foes.
I guarantee that if Tech wins ten games again next year, they will be our rival. Whether it lasts permanently is a different story, but even our rivalries with A&M and OU go through hot and cold periods.

Might as well buy the shirt if you're a Tech fan
Because that might very well be their best season ever, and that WILL be their best season ever for awhile.
I don’t see them going 11-1 for a long time if Leach leaves.
The main reason they went 11-1 in the first place was the luxury of playing their toughest games at home at night. The one time they had to play a good team on the road, they were blasted.
Meanwhile, OK State is pretty much written off even though they had to play @ Mizzou, @ Tech, and @ Texas. If Tech had to play a tough road schedule like that this year, they might very well be 9-3.
by goingforthecorner on Dec 5, 2008 1:27 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
Shrug
It’s at least their best season under Leach. They can celebrate that if they wish. The Horns aren’t satisfied at all because we expect more, but for the fans of Tech, it was a step forward and it may not be sustainable (especially if Leach leaves). They had a great season and they should be proud, and you know how college students love T-shirts.
I agree that it’s good to remind ourselves not to be spoiled and to be thankful. We had a memorable season as well, and no amount of screwing by stupid rules is going to change that.
by TheElusiveShadow on Dec 5, 2008 1:49 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
As a born and bred Red Raider, it does kind of make me pause a bit when we feel the need to make a t-shirt about our best season ending in the Cotton Bowl. Twenty years ago, that would have meant a whole lot more. I don’t see a problem with the shirt…but I hate that we look so, ohhh, what’s the word…satisfied?…that we had one great season.
I guess what would be a little cooler and more relevant is a shirt saying that We Own the Night or something like that…because apparently, at home, we do.
And yes, all three of us got a Big XII south division championship trophy.

Missouri being presented the North Division trophy a couple of weeks ago.
I also find it interesting to learn that Mizzou razzed Kansas earlier this year after learning that KU recieved a trophy for last year’s co-North championship and having the gall to display it. My guess is that any program would proudly display such an award, but still…I guess this whole debacle will be revisited many times next season.

Why aren't you satisfied with the season?
It was a good season. It’s unfortunate that we won’t go to a BCS game, but we picked the absolute worst year to win 11 games.
It’s a fucking t-shirt, what am I missing here?

In the South are tri-champions, in the North are co-champions.
Texas, Tech, oU, all 7-1.
Missouri, Nebraska, both 5-3.
Five trophies, a banner year for trophies.
I’m surprised we’re not butt-deep in t-shirts.
