Around SBN: Ohio State And Florida Target 2013 Receiver Recruits

Just let it go already!

I did a similar fanpost to this one I am about to write after the Tech loss. Some of you may know that I am in Iraq right now and I am not able to get on BON very much, due to limited time my computer time is pretty much left to emailing my wife. I do get on BON once in awhile to see how everyone is doing and just read up here and there. This last week though I have been able to get on BON a few more times.

All I gotta say is, let it go! Yes when I saw the BCS standings I was pissed and ready to take on any OU fan that is over here in Iraq as well. But after being able to settle down I realized that there is nothing I can do about it. It is what it is, then I remembered where I was at and looked around my surroundings and said to myself, "Hey I am in Iraq, I could be killed over and never see my family again." Once again reality set in for me and realized that there are a ton of more important things in this world than what the Texas Longhorns do on the playing field. You know what is important to me, the fact that I missed my sons first birthday. That killed me a million times more than Texas losing a 3-way tie or even getting beat by OU.

Don't get me wrong I am a huge Longhorns fan, but there really are more important things in life. I am sure many of you have wives, kids, and jobs you have to worry about.  I read, so many of the posts and you guys fail to realize what a success this season was. You have the mentality that if there is not a national championship then the season was a bust. I have never seen a team do, so much with, so little. Yes I know this Texas team is talented, but it is a very young team with positions that still have yet to really be filled by a standout(i.e. the rb position, which is the second most important position on the offensive side of the ball).

So next time you think about writing another post about how you are pissed off and how Texas got screwed. Remember a few things. First if Texas had gone undefeated then there would be no problem. The only team that has any right to argue about that is Auburn. Second this team went way beyond expectations and will at the worst be playing in a BCS, you look at Tech. They think they are all happy, but they have to settle for the Cotton Bowl, unless a miracle happens in KC tonight. Third I am as big of a Longhorn fan as anyone that reads, writes, or contributes to this board, but I know there are way beyond more important things in life than a National Championship. LIfe goes on everyone, it is not the end of the world. If Texas does not win or OU wins a national championship.

But I will never let this go. Especially if OU wins tomorrow.

One of my online friends died a few weeks ago

He was diagnosed with skin cancer about a month or two ago and was just asking people on another forum I frequent what he should expect from chemo. The next thing I know his brother is making a thread about how he collapsed in the shower while he was getting ready to go see the doctor. His name’s Mitch and he was a diehard Missouri fan but everyone called him Zou. That is such an eye opener to see that someone you consider a good friend who you talked to almost on a daily basis can be taken out of your life without a moment’s notice. Value your family and friends but especially your life because without a moment’s notice it can and one day will be taken from you. I miss ya, Zou.

Not trying to take attention off of HornsRiverine’s post it’s been something I’ve been thinking lately as well. So much whining and complaining from people here it’s felt like OU fans after a bowl game. All of this griping and we still are in this. No matter what happens on Saturday be thankful that we had a hell of a year and are in a BCS bowl because most fans won’t have that luxury as they watch their teams play bowl games this month.

Nice Post

but I must say, its a good thing the government did not give me a firearm and then force me to be in close proximity to land-thieving cretins during this whole mess. I think I would be in Leavenworth by now!!

All kidding aside … stay safe and come home soon … and GO MIZZOU!!!!

by Loisaida Horn on Dec 6, 2008 7:22 AM CST reply actions

I agree

I like the post. I was talking to someone last night and what he said really hit home even though i heard it before. He said," You know coming into the season if you would have told me We would be 11-1 and beat OU and be in-line for a BCS bowl i would be very happy." He went on to say, “We are in a win-win situation, we are going to a BCS bowl for sure and may even play in the national title game.”

You can’t look at what OU does in one season, regardless of the outcome I will always look back on the ’08 season as the a great season.

Agree with ya HR.

While I don’t like how things fell, I knew we could be in for the emotional rollercoaster we have seen the past week and a half. I started prepping myself for this right after the Baylor game. You just cannot predict what the human element can do. Living here in the land of thieves has not made it any easier. Most know here in hell know I keep a level head about my Horns so I don’t get too much crap. I told most it was gona be close and could fall either way. Many of the idiots on the radio here cannot or won’t even try to see our side. They forget about Dallas in October. Even the anti-horn on the radio here (Jim Trabbor for those up here) sees our side.

BUT, as HR says, there are more important things in life than Texas Football. Not many, but there are. You don’t have to be in Iraq to realize you might not see the sunrise tomorrow, or something could happen to a loved one or friend. The season before our MNC, I was big time engrossed in the boys. I went to every home game and a few away games. To make a long story short, my wife left an 80K a year job that traveled 3 of 4 weeks a month to take one for 12K so she could be home with the kids. I only made two games during the MNC run but it was still sweet. I still don’t get to go to the games as much as I would like but my family life is much better.

Look back to last year at this time. We did not even know which way our program was going. In July/August, we hoped to be 8-4 and seeing improvement to build a run for 2009. A BCS bowl is a lot better than going to San Diego or San Antonio. Hell, Tech is only going to be going to the Cotton (That is only if Mizzo or ou doesn’t get it after Saturday). While I don’t see it happening, there is a small chance of getting to MNC. We have lots to be thankful for. Hell, who knows, we might get to see the land of thieves get their asses kicked AGAIN (win for us).

HR, stay safe and keep warm. I was there in 90 – 91 and did not know you could freeze you ass off in the Middle East.

Peace

We're Texas...and you're NOT

Of course there are more important things...

But this is BON…a site built for this precise verbal onslaught…a site to vent…a site to rejoice…and a site to hold voters accountable for their ineptness.

BTW, thank you very much for serving and may God bless and protect you and yours.

Thank you for your service and may you and your family stay safe. Much as I love the "Horns, they should be a bonus to everyday life, not a substitute for it.

What we’re all really mad about is OU going to the big dance yet again. We went 3 years ago and want to go back. We’re mad we’re not there (pending Mizzou’s outcome), and especially that OU is the bunch that kept us out, particularly since we beat them.

But for One missed interception, One missed tackle, or One less second go we.

The answer is Beat EVeryOne. BEVO has spoken.

by Longhorn1214 on Dec 6, 2008 12:10 PM CST reply actions

kind of agree...

college football is not life itself.

BUT… it is a nice (if, in the end, inconsequential) part of life. And that part has certainly been tainted by all this mess. We are sitting home watching two teams we beat by double digits play off for a conference championship. That hurts – not like big things in life – family, friends, faith certainly, but it’s a part of life you’ve chosen to feel passionate about, and part of that passion is submitting to the pain; if you don’t, then the pleasure of something like 2005 is also muted. In other words, it’s not cancer, but even skinned knees hurt…

I guess if OU wins, we will console ourselves with the knowledge – the certainty – that it will be a tarnished, asterisk-riddled title. Unfortunately, they’re used to tainted championships, in fact, don’t know any other kind, so they won’t care. Again though, they’ve never felt the kind of joy we did in ’05…

Trust me, in our real lives I think we all have this in perspective. Please stay safe and return to your family unharmed – and thank you from the bottom of our hearts for your service!!!

Thanks

for serving our country. Freedom is not free. Without you and others who are in uniform, we may not able to enjoy what we can enjoy everyday..Thanks for fighting and protecing our freedom.

You’ve nailed it right.. There’s a lot of things more important than football. I approached this whole BCS crap like “not taking everything for granted attitude”.. This team have done more than what we have expected. I’m grateful to see Applewhite came back to be the Horns and we have Muschamp have done an tremedous job for our D. We got a spot on BCS bowl not to mention we still have a chance to play MNC if some miracles happen on MIzzou today.

Beside the Horns, I am not sure if you are also Army or Navy fans. Army does not doing well this year and they are losing big to Navy today.

Our thougths and prayers just like your family. We hope you and your buddies over there will come home safe soon.

Have a safe and Merry Christmas to you and your family.

I agree,

As much as I hate the fact that we’re out of the money here…I must be getting old.

All I can say is “If you don’t like it…you should’ve made a play”

I am embarassed that my coach is a laughing stock as he grovels for votes.

It’s football. Maybe they shouldn’t have snapped the ball on the go-ahead drive vs Tech with so much time left on the play clock. Maybe Gideon should hold onto the ball. Maybe Brown should actually defend the pass or (gasp) tackle Crabtree. Maybe Earl Thomas should run between Crabtree and the goal line to help out rather than just running toward the bench as a spectator.

Sorry guys. I’m upset too but I’m over it. We controlled our own destiny and we blew it.

Don’t like it? Make a friqqin’ PLAY and we’re not having any of this conversation.

Different strokes, for different folks.

I appreciate you are fighting for my rights which enables me to have the freedoms I do have. However, I choose to make Longhorns sports a part of my life. My wife and I chose not to have kids so we can enjoy things like Saturday afternoon football without the responsibilities of taking care of kiddos. Someday we might change our minds, until then I am going to be pissed about our situation because I feel a disservice has been done to a group of young men and their coaches that worked their tails off. I can’t reasonably tell you your priorities are wrong because they differ from mine. They are just different, and I can appreciate that.

Spare us

I doubt there is anyone here who does not realize that football is a game and there are more important things. But you can’t help feeling the way you do and having someone tell you that you aren’t entitled to your emotions does not make things better.

Before you criticize someone, walk a mile in their shoes. If they get mad, you're a mile away AND you have their shoes.

by Caradoc on Dec 6, 2008 6:36 PM CST reply actions

Correction

Tech is not going to the Cotton Bowl. OU is :).

by TheElusiveShadow on Dec 6, 2008 6:51 PM CST reply actions

I did mean to offend some of you guys!

I am not telling you not to be mad about what has happened to the Longhorns. God knows I am still upset about it. Even more, so watching the “Land Thieves” hold the Big 12 trophy again. I was just trying to tell people that were still complaining about the BCS standings a week later to put it behind them and move on. There is nothing you or I can change, it is what it is.

Yes it sucks a million times more due to the fact it was lost to the hated state from the north, but it still is what it is. If I set anyone off or offended anybody, I am sorry that was never my intention. I was just trying to make everyone feel better and put it into perspective that’s all.

The next up and coming Longhorns QB!

by HornsRiverine on Dec 7, 2008 1:01 AM CST reply actions

No offense taken

I know you were just trying to help. But like everything else in life, people will move on at their own time and in their own way. The best thing you can do is say how you dealt with things yourself, and that was the good part of your post.

Before you criticize someone, walk a mile in their shoes. If they get mad, you're a mile away AND you have their shoes.

by Caradoc on Dec 7, 2008 10:33 AM CST reply actions

Understandable but......

This is where you are wrong!

You said, “I was trying to tell people that were still complaining about the BCS standings a week later to put it behind them and move on. There is nothing you or I can change, it is what it is.”

You of all people should know that’s not true. I’m not comparing this to war by any means but the only way to stop injustice is to STAND UP AND FIGHT! If we don’t state our case to the Beebe, the BCS and the nation, who will?

Don’t ever get over it! Our kids and coaches busted their tails for years and years to get to this point and it was stolen. True fans will forever be PISSED!!!!!

Be safe. May God bless you and protect you.

by Ericg320 on Dec 7, 2008 10:36 AM CST reply actions

Ericg320 and Caradoc you are 110% right!

This morning as I woke up, I get online to see what the final BCS standings were(you gotta remember I am 8 hours ahead of Eastern time) and I was not expecting to see Texas playing in the national championship game, but what shocked me was the coach’s poll.

I want some blood, I want mikey leach’s fat little head on a stake on top of DKR next to little howies, and arties. You are right as fans we have the right to deal with it how we want, and as Texas fans we straight up got bent over. Every Texas fan has the right to bitch for years to come. So lets hear everyones disgust of the BCS, the coach’s poll, and every injustice that has been shown over the last two weeks. I apologize for telling everyone how to deal with this mess. You deal with it how you want and if you want to scream to the world that this is “bullshit” well I will be right there with you. I know I may be a hypocrite(I think that is how you spell it), but I do not care, I want some justice and I am starting with stoopsy and his cronies.

Hook ’Em and beat the hell outta the Buckeyes!

The next up and coming Longhorns QB!

by HornsRiverine on Dec 7, 2008 11:36 PM CST up reply actions

I do agree! Somewhat!

First of all stay safe over there. Second I agree with the overall message you sent, all except that the season is a great success. It without a doubt it was a very great season. A success it was not. One of the reasons Texas is such a great instituion is we are one of those schools that the moto here is “Championship is Bust” examples USC, Florida, Ohio State and yes even Oklahoma (that hurt). Now yes I know some of you will say we cant win it every year this that and the other but that doesnt meen we do not expect it. I for one am proud of the moto. We will never settle with saying that “well we didnt win the title but the season was a great success.” The only way now at least for me that this season can be a great success is if the BCS is done away with and a playoff system is put in sooner rather than later. REMEMBER we expect Greatness every year! WE’RE TEXAS!

by LEMILES on Dec 8, 2008 12:49 AM CST reply actions

I remember watching Longhorns games as the sun came up in Tikrit back in ‘03. We had one television in my entire company, since we were basically living in old concrete hangers we had blown up during the invasion. Anyway, I was the only one willing to sacrifice two nights of sleep (’Horns on Sunday morning, Chiefs on Monday morning) most weeks to watch my favorite teams play, so I was lucky to have the chance to watch the games. Too bad the season didn’t go that well, and that I missed out on getting to use the KSU@UT tickets wifey had bought me for my birthday that season. But I did get to watch UNT@UT earlier in the season when I was back at Ft. Hood for two weeks.

Anyway, I’m glad I’m not over there now, but my prayers are with those who are. I lost a few buddies, and I of about 60 married people in my platoon, more than half ended up getting divorced as a result of the deployment. Since our battalion had to go into Iraq at the same time as the first brigade in and left the same time as the last brigade out, one guy I know missed his kid’s birth AND first birthday, and of course never got to take his 2wks. leave, so he met his son for the first time when the kid was more than a year old. Others in my battalion (but not my company) committed suicide, some in my company attempted to do so, and a number mutilated themselves in attempts to get sent home. This is all much more serious and important than college football, and we all know that. I have a number of buddies over there now, and while it’s a lot better now than it was then, not having to eat MREs every mealtime and not sleeping in a humvee shelter doesn’t make Thanksgiving or Christmas much better.

That said, this is a site for Longhorns sports and discussion thereof, so it’s absolutely appropriate to ignore proper perspective and gripe about the injustices of sports. I think we all know that, in proper perspective, sports are isignificant compared to life-and-death matters.
