$5 (not really)

To anybody who can explain why even with a win over Bama Florida will jump UT in the polls. Correct me if I’m wrong, but Florida’s SOS is lower than Texas’ and Florida has a worse loss (at home to unranked team). Florida has three wins right now over top 25 teams including one win over a top 10 team. Texas has the same, but all three top 25 wins are over opponents ranked higher than Florida’s. Florida’s toughest four game stretch was South Carolina, Citadel (WTF) Florida State and Alabama. Texas’ was…I’m sure you know. Against common opponent Arkansas, Florida had a margin of 31 whilst Texas had 42. Granted our Arkansas game was at home versus Florida’s at Arkansas, but is that worth an 11 point differenetial against a weak team? Anyway, call me crazy bu I’m pulling for OU tonight because I believe there is a rematch possibility.

by UTexasCPA on Dec 6, 2008 6:49 PM CST reply actions

Objectivity says we should stay ahead

But unfortunately subjectivity rules the BCS, and the voters WILL make sure Florida is ranked above us.

by goingforthecorner on Dec 6, 2008 6:51 PM CST up reply actions

They just beat the #1 team

and voters will put them to the top

by GoHorns1 on Dec 6, 2008 6:51 PM CST up reply actions

Silliness

That’d just be said given the two teams are pretty easily comparable in their schedules. People need to quit power polling at the end of the season, dangit!

by UTexasCPA on Dec 6, 2008 6:54 PM CST up reply actions

not certain...

A big OU win tonight could put them in the #1 spot and decrease the space between Texas and Florida in the human polls. That being said, i’ll be rooting hard for Mizzou tonight.

by brownf on Dec 6, 2008 6:58 PM CST up reply actions

Craig James

just echoed my point. what a surprise…

by GoHorns1 on Dec 6, 2008 7:00 PM CST up reply actions

Just stop

Florida’s in. I agree with your argument, CPA but FLA is in. We need Mizzou or it’s just a BCS bowl

by shadyrock on Dec 6, 2008 6:51 PM CST up reply actions

You're crazy

If OU loses, you’re in. If OU wins, you’re probably not in. (If OU wins huge, it’s possible that they would be a unanimous #1 and the computers might keep you ahead of Florida … but not likely.)

If you want to be in the title game, you are a Mizzou fan tonight.

by SpartanDan on Dec 6, 2008 6:53 PM CST up reply actions

Don't forget

that off throwing hand injury to Bradford should cause +2 turnovers at the LOS during the game.

by UTexasCPA on Dec 6, 2008 6:55 PM CST reply actions

fumbles moreso than turnovers

he could pick them up and run them in for td’s as we saw last week

by andmyster on Dec 6, 2008 6:57 PM CST up reply actions

Good point SpartanDan

if OU wins, we should actually root for them to win in a huge blowout. We’d want them to get as many 1st place votes as possible from the Coaches and Harris guys, so Florida would be stuck with #2 votes at the highest.

by goingforthecorner on Dec 6, 2008 6:57 PM CST reply actions

Media

I like what the media’s been saying lately about Colt and Texas getting the shaft.

by UTexasCPA on Dec 6, 2008 6:58 PM CST reply actions

They were all rooting for us.

Because advocates of a playoff system believe what happens on the field should count. BCS supporters don’t think that’s the way it should be.

The real key powering OU offense is TO margin.

OU is +20 overall, +11 in November.
UT is +3 for the season.

What could we have done with 17 more TOs? hmmmmmm

So, for Mizzou, the real lucky key is getting TOs instead of making them. It’s that simple.

by whills on Dec 6, 2008 7:06 PM CST reply actions

why couldn't we...

have snuck in Muschamp for mizzou, just for a coupla days this week…?

"When you get to the end zone, act like you've been there before."

by txex92 on Dec 6, 2008 7:07 PM CST reply actions

The bad part

Is that Mizzou doesn’t seem like the team that likes to sustain long drives and eat the clock. We totally wore down OU’s defense and had a big advantage in TOP. I don’t think Mizzou is the type of team for that.

by TheElusiveShadow on Dec 6, 2008 7:09 PM CST reply actions

by Hopkins Horn on Dec 6, 2008 7:28 PM CST up reply actions

So I'm a bit confused

I’d been assuming all week that, if OU were to win, a OU blowout would make the “Florida doesn’t catch us” scenario likelier to happen.

But I just read bcsguru, and he makes the case that we’d be better served with a narrow OU win.

OU comes out strong, moving the ball at will on the first drive. Somehow their shanked field goal goes through.

by silky51 on Dec 6, 2008 8:29 PM CST reply actions

Run down of Mizzou’s chances:

Third and 2: Line up five wide and run a keeper.
Three and out with a shanked punt by OU: Five wide on first down, has to throw it away. Loss on second. Three and out.
After touchdown: Stupid penalty to give OU great field position.
After getting the ball on OU’s side of the field: Run a keeper. Fumble.

This is why you coach at Mizzou, Pinkel.

by TexasSooner on Dec 6, 2008 9:13 PM CST up reply actions

Big 12 North

Here’s the Big 12 title game history recently:

2008, North team down 31 at half
2007, North team loses by 21
2006, North team loses by 14
2005, North team loses by 67
2004, North team loses by 39
2003, North team wins by 28
2002, North team loses by 22

So, North team now falls to 1-6 in the past 7 years. If Mizzou keeps it even in 2nd half, margin of victory for Big 12 conference winner? 31.7 POINTS.

by JohnsonUT on Dec 6, 2008 9:08 PM CST reply actions

How would a playoff work this year?

7 BCS conference one-loss teams (T tech, Tx, OU, Fl, Alabama, USC, and PSU)

2 undefeated teams (Utah and Boise St.)

2 other BCS conference champions (Va Tech and Cincinatti)

Who should be in the playoff?

I agree, go with the 8 best teams

1. Oklahoma vs. 8. Penn State
2. Florida vs. 7 Texas Tech
3. Texas vs. 6. Utah
4. USC vs. 5. Alabama

Not that hard. 8 teams go. Boise State doesn’t get in. Tough shit, if they don’t like that they should schedule more than one decent OOC team (Oregon this year).

To be honest

I’m kinda uneasy about a possible UT/Ohio St. matchup. Maybe it’s just a perception that they have a good defense.

Seeing what Hunter did to us, Beanie Wells could do the same. Plus they have Pryor.

We should win but I don’t think it’s going to be a blowout.

It’ll be interesting to see how well Mack can motivate the team. If we do win, then I’m thinking we could be preseason #1 next year.

Weird thing...

…I watched the UF-Bama game with a friend who is an OU fan and who is very wired into this whole BCS thing — like email a question to his buddy Jerry Palm and get a response within five minutes wired — and he wasn’t even aware aware of this scenario. Once I pointed it out and he began crunching the numbers and got some feedback from the Palm types, he became a believer that it can (not will, but can) happen.

Point is: if a BCS number crunching geek like this wasn’t even aware of what might happen, I don’t think Brent and Herbie will be either.
