Supporting the BIG XII during the Bowl Season

Lately on the local sports radio stations here in Austin, there has been an argument that UT should continue to root for Oklahoma in the national championship.

The reasoning would be that (a) We could claim to be the team that beat the National Champs and draw an AP title and (b)An OU loss is bad for the BIGXII.

My opinion of this is an emphatic HELL NO!  I will never root for the Sooners, especially not with a National Title on the line.

(a) The chances of a split title small.  No matter what Texas does, if OU wins the BCS title, they will most likely be a unanimous champ.

(b) I don't buy the hype about the BigXII's reputation being damaged.  Please, OU has lost its last 4 BCS bowls and nobody gives a d*mn.  I mean look where they are at now.  Ohio St has lost its last 2 and is STILL in a BCS bowl.  And if OU losing means I have to listen to another year of SEC fawning, thats just fine with me.  It'll be drowned out by the whimperings of the distraught neighbors north of the Red River.

anybody who calls himself a Texas fan

and roots for OU in the championship game is a liar, imo.

Ughhh, the thought of rooting for the Land Thieves

makes me nauseous. So, no, I think hell would freeze over first.

by HornigStrega on Dec 8, 2008 11:51 PM CST reply actions

It's easy

We hate them. They should have let us in that game if they wanted the Big 12 to be represented properly. I will never root for the Sooners in any sport ever again, no matter how many national championships we might win if they win. If they win, fine, we’ll just have to beat them so bad in Dallas next year that no one will confuse them for a good team no matter how many points they score in the rest of the season.

i don't think i could do it

part of me wants big xii to look really good, and that part wants ou to win for that reason. but that part was brutally murdered by the other parts about a week back. we don’t miss him. i do agree that the big xii’s image would take a hit if they get blown out though.

but i think texas’s image will be better boosted by a shelaking of ohio state than whether or not ou wins/loses. ou losing a close one, texas killing tosu, that’s what i want. actually no, i want ou to get beat so badly that we all get to see another crying sooner child.

Believe me, I don't want to hear SEC crap

If OU gets whipped, there’s no question that the SEC and their fans will use that game to “prove” that the Big 12’s offensive numbers just come from poor defenses. It will be very, very annoying, especially since we already know that OU has a mediocre defense so they aren’t telling us anything new. After all, SEC love just arguably robbed us of a national title game, as numerous people have argued convincingly that Florida’s overall resume isn’t close to ours.

However… there’s no way I’m cheering for OU. Not going to happen.

by TheElusiveShadow on Dec 9, 2008 3:05 AM CST reply actions

I will also say this

While I want OU to lose, I don’t know if I want them to get totally wasted. OU jumped us because of a silly tiebreak; Florida jumped us frankly because of SEC love and voter manipulation. So it’s not like I wish good things for the Gators right now.

Anti-Big 12

The voting has left a sour taste in my mouth and I will be cheering against almost all Big 12 teams from now on.

by JohnsonUT on Dec 9, 2008 7:34 AM CST reply actions

I'll be cheering for

all Big12 teams, except OU. Missouri, Nebraska, Kansas, Oklahoma St, Oklahoma, and even Tech.

What does it really gain?

Is a split MNC worth more than the recruits Texas will lose over the next few years if OU wins in Miami? I know my answer to that.

So you're saying that now I have to think of some witty Sig that will be applicable across all the SBN sites? Go TexanHornStros!

by Shake on Dec 9, 2008 7:52 AM CST reply actions

Absolutely not. OU needs to be embarrassed, and UT needs to work to marginalize the Dirt Thieves in recruiting over the next couple of years.

by burntorangehorn on Dec 9, 2008 8:40 AM CST up reply actions

There’s no split title this year. OU is already rated ahead of UT in the AP poll, and that’s not going to change if OU beats UF. Root for UF.

Also, I agree with JohnsonUT: I’m rooting against the Big 12. Well, maybe not against Okie State, Mizzou, Nebraska, or Kansas, but against OU and TT for certain. Leach and Stoops each need to floss their digestive tracts with barbed wire.

by burntorangehorn on Dec 9, 2008 8:39 AM CST reply actions

I'm physically incapable of rooting for OU

I’ve tried before, but after 1 quarter I’m always cheering against them. I’m think I’m hard wired.

I loathe everything

about the disgusting university in Norman, Ok. A friend of mine from Houston texted me “how about my sooners…” to which I replied “I hope the Gators absolutely destroy you.” I think he was actually expecting me to be rooting for them. Why? I mean, I was the biggest boise fan a couple of years back. Perhaps he is thinking of the A&M fan holding the sign after VY and the boys whipped up on them en route to clipping the Trojans. Roles reversed, were A&M undefeated and heading to the title game, I think I would pull for them. OUsux has replaced the Aggies as the most hated team in Austin.

The disturbing thing

Is that you have a friend who is an OU fan.

by Meekrob on Dec 9, 2008 3:32 PM CST up reply actions

i hope

that they lose by a 100. i hope that the goaters beat em so bad that stoops doesn’t even want to come out after the half time show.

...and ou still sucks.

I have always rooted for all of our other conference teams (first SWC then Big XII)

in their respective bowl games, keeping charts to compare conference bowl records, and hoping for the Big XII to have the best. I felt it would help our own cause if our conference “brothers” made a good showing. I always wanted OU to have just one loss – to Texas, which, in a just and logical world, would normally mean that Texas was universally recognized as the superior of the two teams. (Of course, that “logic” has now been proven not to exist.) In the last few years though, I’ve noticed that even though I wanted OU to win their bowl games, I found myself increasingly enjoying each of their losses – with particular emphasis on the Boise State game. After this season, I have come full circle. ( O VINCE! I HAVE SEEN THE LIGHT!) ln fact, I now find it hard to believe that I ever rooted for OU to win anything. I will still pull for all of the other Big XII teams to win their respective bowl games, but I want Florida to win the championship by the exact score of 45 -35. Then let the “what might have been” discussions carry over into next season.

Big 12

I will certainly be rooting for Tech over Miss and Missouri over (WTF) Northwestern. I like both schools and not their opponents. I have less enthusiasm for Kansas over Minnesota and Nebraska over Clemson. I don’t like Okie State and kinda like Oregon, so I would not be disappointed to see that Big 12 school drop one. And of course, if I could not bring myself to root for OU when it might have helped us, you can be sure I will not be rooting for them just out of conference loyalty.

Before you criticize someone, walk a mile in their shoes. If they get mad, you're a mile away AND you have their shoes.

True Orange

A true longhorn would rather go 1-11 as long as that one win was against Mobilhoma!

Hell that's fine

Big 12 rep be damned, who cares about any of ‘em!? "We’re Texas," and frankly, that’s all we should care about, not about how our ass-backward conference looks compared to the others. Especially after seeing the Coach’s Poll vote breakdown. Do you think any of them hope we win to make them look better? Or better yet, you think they would if they wasn’t a chance they’d look better as a result. No, and again, we’re Texas, we can overcome them looking bad a lot easier then they can overcome us looking bad, etc. To hell with them.

And Tech people aren’t at the top of my list, personally, I had to grow up listening to their crap nonstop, and now they want in on the big-boy conversation? Puh-lease!

by orangeblood1 on Dec 10, 2008 1:11 AM CST up reply actions

No freaking way

Just the idea that they would own another MNC sickens me. Also, I can’t stand the sight of Bradford’s dumbass shit-eating-grin on ESPN all the time. I’d laugh myself silly to see a 2×4 suddenly come out of nowhere into his face. To hell with ou.

by UT92 on Dec 9, 2008 11:45 PM CST reply actions

As much as I hate the SEC

Or they love they get, rather, but I’ve got nothing but respect for UF. Should they be playing for the MNC? I think we all can and have made the case over and over again why Texas should be playing in Miami instead of either team, at least Florida seems to show up for the BCS when invited. We damn sure know OU hasn’t. I don’t know about the rest of you, but for the next month, I’m totally on the Gator bandwagon, and I’ll have a blast singing about how “It’s great…to be…a Florida…Gator!,” and doing the Gator Chomp all night long Jan 8!

It’s 12:57…

by orangeblood1 on Dec 10, 2008 12:57 AM CST reply actions

and OU still sucks!

In fact, I recently made the drive from Ohio back to Texas. As we crossed from the Eastern into the Central time zone, I couldn’t help but thank Vince that I could experience OU sucking for an additional hour that day.

BCS

Great Poll idea!

This year the BCS Committee has really blown it more than they usually do. Putting Oklahoma ahead of Texas after Texas beat them is ridiculous and crazy!

Go to www.BSFlag.com/BCS – they have an email system set up to send a BSFlag right to the BCS mailbox! Check it out!

If enough people send flags to the BCS committee, maybe they will take notice, and maybe then, we the fans, can make a difference!
