Medical Redshirt?

What kind of requirements does J Shipley need to meet to get his sixth year of eligibilty? Is there precedence that the NCAA follows and are there any big names that have ever received an extra year? I always see him referred to as a senior by most national writers, but around here everyone hopes he will be back next year. Any chance B Irby could meet the requirements also? When will the NCAA let him and UT know?

This is the best Wikipedia has:

A medical redshirt, called a “medical hardship” by the NCAA, can be granted by the governing body for a season lost completely or almost completely to injury. A medical redshirt can allow a player to gain additional eligibility beyond the standard four academic calendar years. On rare occasions, a player may be allowed to play in his or her sixth year of college if he or she suffered a serious injury which kept him or her from playing for more than one season.

Also this:

To receive a medical hardship waiver – in any sport – the injury must limit the student-athlete’s participation to no more than 20 percent of the team’s contests (rounded to the next whole number), with all participation occurring in the first half of the season.

Therefore, for a football player, the maximum number of games that he can play in and still receive a medical hardship waiver is three (20 percent of 11 equals 2.2, which is rounded up to 3), and none of his time on the field can occur after the fifth game (the sixth game of an eleven game season is considered in the second half of the season).

They both should

They both should be able to because B. Irby didn’t play enough this year before the injury and should get one. Shipley had a year to a year and a half where he pretty much didn’t play, The Texas coaches seem confident that he will get another year of eligibility.

He will medical redshirt this year – he’ll have 3 years of eligibility left starting next year.

Does anyone have any more recent update at all on Irby?

Id love to hear any news on his recovery, disposition or the like.

I saw him at the A&M game and he was walking around the sideline without crutches and without limping. I don’t know if that’s news, but that was the first time I had seen him without his little scooter thing.

Unfortunately,

I read (I think on ShaggyBevo) that he’s doubtful for next year.

Link.

I don’t know where they got their information, though.

That's probably right...

He blew out a knee against Rice in late September. Knee injuries take a full year to heal, and he wouldn’t be able to practice in any meaningful way until Sept 2009, which means he would miss spring football, summer 7-on-7’s and summer camp. He might be ready late in the season next year.

Considering that the program has called it a dislocated knee

but hasn’t discussed the ligament damage that occurred, I think that plays into it. Shaun Livingston still isn’t back totally healthy after shredding his knee and I think it took McGahee some time as well. If Irby only had to deal with one ligament tear, it’s conceivable he could play next year at some point, but I wouldn’t count on it.

As for Shipley, he missed two seasons, so it shouldn’t be a problem for him to get the hardship waiver because he didn’t endanger his eligibility by getting on the field at all. Bo Scaife is the obvious parallel.

Jason White

I remember that he was able to return for a 6th season due to both of his knees being injured at some point.
