not as strong

But Scottie Reynolds is a beast of a guard, to be sure. Contain him, and I think we win.

Ya'll have fun...

… my TV’s in the other room. I’ll come say “Damn!” or “Dayum!” at halftime, depending on how I think it’s going.

Ebanks

had some freaking adrenaline on the last shot!

May Colt be with you. Yeah, that's right.

would be nice if this were a tournament

I would love to play Davidson tomorrow. An AJ vs. Curry matchup would be a lot of fun.

over/under on north carolina references by vitale tonight?

or maybe he can give us a preview of the unc/duke game that is only 2 months and 2 days away?

me, too

I like us not letting them dictate the action- we’re going with Dex and making them adjust to OUR game, not the other way around.

I like what Ward did there

We need our guards to penetrate like that…. He went at his man twice.

by the1austin on Dec 9, 2008 9:16 PM CST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

on offense

moving james out to the perimeter seems to totally kill atchley’’s strengths. we can’t have both of them just standing out there. takes away our spacing.

timeouts during longhorn basketball games means somebody’s gonna get yelled at for not playing defense.

and it’ll continue all the way through timeout and into the first possession following.

by APinAustin on Dec 9, 2008 9:37 PM CST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

thats great

it means aj will always play hard defense cause getting chewed out in front of scouts could hurt his first round draft chances

by hayzer13 on Dec 9, 2008 9:39 PM CST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

at the ucla game

rick took maybe four timeouts after our bigs jumped away from collison on the pick and roll and gave him an open shot. and during each one, he chewed out one of our bigs. and they wouldn’t dare say anything back or even look away. it was hilarious. and awesome.

Ah crap

good penetration by Balbay but has to control himself once he gets into the paint. He’s not used to the floppers here in America.

by goingforthecorner on Dec 9, 2008 9:45 PM CST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

floppers in America?

i thought all of the blame for flopping was going to the influx of foreigners?

by longhornscardinals on Dec 9, 2008 9:46 PM CST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

True

but there is a lot of flopping going on in college too. And we know college is pretty much 99.99% American players

by goingforthecorner on Dec 9, 2008 9:47 PM CST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

probably 80-20 villanova.

even the casual fans with no affiliation are rooting for villanova, but we have a lot of alumni in NYC.

by DrunkArmadillo on Dec 9, 2008 9:46 PM CST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Ward has been aggressive

Given us some good minutes, but he has 2 costly turnovers. Still, I like that he pushes the ball up the floor when he can and attacks the basket. He’s had a good half.

by the1austin on Dec 9, 2008 9:46 PM CST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Uh-oh,

Final possession of the half. This could get ugly.

by ctex80 on Dec 9, 2008 9:47 PM CST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

It was productive this time

With Mason, Ward, Abrams, Balbay, and James, you have 5 players that are capable of driving to the basket. I wish we could see this more often.

by goingforthecorner on Dec 9, 2008 9:49 PM CST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Chris Mullin

I loved that Golden State team with him and Hardaway and Mitch Richmond.

by the1austin on Dec 9, 2008 9:50 PM CST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

This team is DEEP.

6 points at the half, Abrams playing very composed, solid bench contribution. Nova playing sloppy, but Cunningham is killing us.

by ctex80 on Dec 9, 2008 9:51 PM CST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

wright says nova playing "too fast"

hopefully our depth can wear them down in the second half and we can keep reynolds down.

by DrunkArmadillo on Dec 9, 2008 9:51 PM CST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Kind of what you'd expect

We’re outscoring their bench 9 to 0. Only 3 players from Nova have scored!

by goingforthecorner on Dec 9, 2008 9:52 PM CST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Deep, team, etc.

but color me “unimpressed.”

colt on tirico/van pelt

anyone have a (non-espn insider) link where i can hear his interview today? i heard it was really good.

by hayzer13 on Dec 9, 2008 10:02 PM CST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

it was the standard “say the right things” fare until the last couple of minutes. at which point he told mike and scott he went “spotlighting” on saturday night to shoot at some “varmints”…to take out some of his anger of not being in the big 12 title game.

yes, he said varmints. good stuff

by APinAustin on Dec 9, 2008 10:04 PM CST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

sorry i don’t have a link though. i heard it replayed on 1530 espn radio during the evening.

jimmy v foundation

i heard that all of the money donated is actually applied toward research. they don’t use these donations for administrative purposes, etc.

good cause.

by DrunkArmadillo on Dec 9, 2008 10:02 PM CST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

why do we pick up our dribble??

this team needs to learn more ballhandling skills because very time i see anyone other than mason play with the ball, after 3 seconds they pick up their dribble. it kills the offense and it gives the defense an easier time to trap. if we just improve on this, we’re a top 5 team hands down

by CaliforniaHorn on Dec 9, 2008 10:10 PM CST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

why doesn't Dex use two hands to dunk?

probably gets the basket plus the foul. can he not get off the ground for it?

by longhornscardinals on Dec 9, 2008 10:12 PM CST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Connor with a turnover...

He just doesn’t look like the player I saw last year…

by the1austin on Dec 9, 2008 10:13 PM CST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Patience

This team is still growing into itself offensively. Connor’s been fine.

I tell you what

We’re up by 7, but it’s really more like we’re up by 12-13, because our defense is just dominating them. They can’t score on a consistent basis at all.

flashes of some serious potential

saw it for about 2 mins in the first half against ucla. even if his solid production only comes for 3-5 mins a game, i like the spark he provides.

by hayzer13 on Dec 9, 2008 10:18 PM CST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Yeah he's close

At least on offense. Real close. On defense his feet are soooo slow.

--PB--

by PB @ BON on Dec 9, 2008 10:19 PM CST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

sadly though

once his burst ends, it goes way downhill. like the rest of the ucla game.

Cunningham

Incredible game. Single-handedly keeping them in this.

--PB--

by PB @ BON on Dec 9, 2008 10:20 PM CST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

It seems to me like we are dominating this game.

The only reason Villanova is even in this game is because that Cunningham guy is on fire. You just can’t defend someone who is on fire.

by HornPossessed on Dec 9, 2008 10:21 PM CST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Man, I LOVE our defense!

They just scored, but if we can maintain that intensity, we will win this running away.

No matter how bad you’re struggling on offense, a great defense can keep you in games. This D can carry us a long way.

by goingforthecorner on Dec 9, 2008 10:21 PM CST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Very bad shot AJ

Take your damn time on offense.

by goingforthecorner on Dec 9, 2008 10:23 PM CST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

--PB--

by PB @ BON on Dec 9, 2008 10:23 PM CST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Bad pass by Mason

As good as our defense is, our offense is just as bad. As the season goes along, we have to find a way to improve this offense without lowering our defense execution.

by goingforthecorner on Dec 9, 2008 10:25 PM CST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

PB, as to Atchley

In the last 5 game (not including tonight where he hasn’t scored) he is averaging 6.2 points and 1.5 rebounds a game. He’s only taken 28 shots and 15 of them have been 3 pointers. I realize this team is playing a lot of new guys, and is trying to find its offensive identity, but those are not good numbers. Obviously, the season is young….

by the1austin on Dec 9, 2008 10:30 PM CST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

yea

Atchley has been a disappointment thus far.

by clra2 on Dec 9, 2008 10:30 PM CST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

What's the deal with the offensive rebounds

seems like other teams are getting a lot against Texas.

by Kool Hand on Dec 9, 2008 10:30 PM CST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Yes!

Johnson asserting himself. Great to see, and comes at a time when Texas really needed it.

by 40AS on Dec 9, 2008 10:32 PM CST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

He can get more mean in three seconds than Dex in a month of Sundays.

by whills on Dec 9, 2008 10:32 PM CST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Make the free throws Gary...

And it was nice to see us get an offensive rebound

by the1austin on Dec 9, 2008 10:34 PM CST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

OMG free throws are killing us

Then again, our whole offense is killing us.

Realistically, while I expect the offense to improve throughout the season, it’s not going to become a great offensive team. We have to deal with this all year.

by goingforthecorner on Dec 9, 2008 10:35 PM CST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

i like balbay's disposition.

if we could put balbay’s disposition in chapman, yikes.

by DrunkArmadillo on Dec 9, 2008 10:36 PM CST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Now I can see why Barnes is OK with AJ chucking up shots

Sadly, it may be our best chance of scoring. We can feed it inside, but it’s no point if they can’t convert their FTs.

by goingforthecorner on Dec 9, 2008 10:37 PM CST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

No no no no

There’s a huge difference between AJ shooting indiscriminately, and AJ shooting within the offense. He’s doing the latter tonight.

--PB--

by PB @ BON on Dec 9, 2008 10:39 PM CST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I know, but

Rick has essentially condoned AJ’s chucking in the Notre Dame game. He’s OK with it because we don’t really have many options.

But today is much better. He has 12 shots so far. Pretty much where it should be.

by goingforthecorner on Dec 9, 2008 10:40 PM CST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Does anyone else get nervous

when Mason’s handling the ball at point?

by StanTheCaddy on Dec 9, 2008 10:38 PM CST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Less so than ever before

I was terrified when the year began. He’s exceeded my expectations. And continues to improve.

--PB--

by PB @ BON on Dec 9, 2008 10:39 PM CST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

On offense, we're prone to turnovers

on defense, the other team is prone to turning the ball over against us.
