A Note On Terrelle Pryor and Russell Shepard
Just a quick update: no one is reporting that Russell Shepard committed to Texas over the junior day weekend. With Gilbert's Friday commit to Texas, that's not terribly surprising, especially in light of Terrelle Pryor as yet being undecided about where he'll play ball.
The point being this: if you want Shepard as much as I do, root for Pryor to wind up at Michigan. Because if Pryor doesn't wind up in Ann Arbor, you count count on Rich Rodriguez throwing the kitchen sink at landing Shepard. It'll make luring him to Texas that much harder, especially with Gilbert already in the '09 class.

I haven't followed Pryor's recruitment closely...
but can someone tell me why he's having trouble deciding between OSU and UM? Looking at the two offensive systems in place (or soon-to-be in place), I can't think of why he wouldn't go to Michigan. Add in to that the fact that NFL QBs don't exactly flow out of SweaterVest's program, you'd think that Michigan would be a lock.
And I see Oregon on his list the same way UCLA was on Darrell Scott's, really, as a late-comer to the party who doesn't really have a shot.
Am I missing something?
Father wants
him to go to Penn State. That's where I would go. If anyone ever took time to look at Michigan, they don't win anything. They're like ATM, their legacy is all a myth. 1997 was a fluke. they get all the calls in the big 10, i mean ALL the calls and still cant get to the MNC game.
wow
did you just type that? there is so much wrong with your comments, it's baffling.
What isn't?
Let's see...
-Most wins in D1 history
-Highest winning percentage in D1 history
-They claim 11 national championships (although the earlier ones are always rather dubious and only 1 since 1948)
-3 Heisman trophy winners
-50 former players currently playing in the NFL (atm currently has 21)
-40 consecutive non losing seasons
-33 straight bowl games
Now, don't get me wrong, I'm no fan of Michigan. They do have problems winning big games, but their legacy isn't all myth. And they're certainly not the "quality" of atm.
Michigan Legacy
Hey folks, longtime reader, first time poster.
It's not my intention to be disagreeable, but I think you'd be hard pressed to make a case the Michigan's legacy is all myth. Yes, they did lose to a 1-AA team this year, but balanced against 42 big ten championships, 11 MNCs and the most wins in D-1 history, that's not so bad.
Toss in 3 Michigan QB's who have made the pro bowl in Pryors lifetime and wunderkind Tom Brady and they've got a compelling history at the position. Probably more compelling Penn State's recent zenith of Kerry Collins. Factor this in, and I think he goes to michigan, http://nfldraft.rivals.com/content.a...
Strange to be taking up for Michigan, but their history is part of what made VY's first Rose Bowl win was so sweet.

thanks for others stating you point...
Well, the original post was about who TP would choose between UM, OSU, and PSU. I stated that Pryor's dad wants his son to attend Penn State, which is closer to Jeanette, PA than the other 2 midwestern universities.
Academically, Michigan would win that 3-way fight.
Athletically, Ohio State might win it because of Jim tressel's ownership of the Wolverines.
Aesthetically, Penn State would get the faxed signature with its history of no probations, no NCAA sanctions, and a historically higher graduation rate, especially for Black athletes, than either UM or OSU.
I understand that UM has the most wins in NCAA history. But how many of those were long before the modern era? If you're impressed with the records of a century ago, check out Army's, Harvard's, or Yale's ... they're still Big Dogs, huh?
Since 1948, UM has gone undefeated AND untied all of (drum roll, please) ONCE. The big bad buckeyes managed to do it in 1968 and then again in 2002. Meanwhile, Joe Paterno alone has been undefeated and untied through the Bowl games in 1968, 1969, 1973, 1986, and 1994. Had Penn State had the century-old voting system to anoint them national champions (or as in UM's case in 1997, SPLIT winners), the Lions would have SIX national championships in the past 40 years.
You talk about NFL QB's as if that means anything for a kid like Pryor. Using your convoluted logic, Vince Young should have gone to Rice where Tommy Kramer burned up the NFL instead of to Texas where James Street, Eddie Phillips, and Major Applewhite never graced a pro sideline. Michigan produces some top-drawer OL, but their list of QB's is not a whole lot more impressive than Penn State's ultra-short list of Chuck Fusina, Todd Blackledge, and Kerry Collins, although Michael Robinson, who was QB on the 11-1 2005 Lion squad, is in the NFL as a RB.
I agree with you that the analogy to TAMU was absurd, but my point was that just as A&M has been irrelevant nationally since 1939, so, too, has Michigan except for a single one-half share of a national title in 1997 ... and that is tainted by the publicly acknowledged scandal involving Charles Woodson that was so egregious, the NCAA lamented that the astute of limitations prevented them from penalizing the wolverines.
Personally, I hope Pryor does pick Penn State, if for no other reason than to send Joe Paterno's last team out a champion. Meanwhile, Rich Rodriguez can try to spend some of that $4 million he owes West Virginia to buy an SUV for next year's top QB out of Texas.
NFL
I forgot where it is, but there was an article where Pryor said something to the effect of (semiquote)I asked them how they would use me, would I just run all the time or would they teach me to be a real quarterback?(/semiquote) So I think that Michigan's perfect system is actually the biggest reason against him going there. Pryor doesn't want to go through the Vince Young "can he pass?" phase in the NFL, if I had to guess, and he sees tOSU as the place that will teach him how to be a "real" QB like Troy Smith (who is actually doing surprisingly well in Baltimore), while still using his athleticism as an extra threat, instead of threat #1. It's an argument that has some merit, IMO. If that's what he actually thinks.
Well...
if Pryor happens to go Michigan, then Ohio State will throw their "kitchen sink".
As well LSU and Florida and a host of others.
IMO wherever Pryor winds up is immaterial and it won't make it any easier or harder to recruit Shepard. He's a "kitchen sink" recruit regardless.

Agree
But I think Rich Rodriguez presents an especially appealing destination to the kid. Call it a hunch, but I think a Pryor-less UM would be the toughest hurdle to leap.
Straight from Shep's mouth...
"I would say Texas is still up there, but Michigan is really at the top of my list, especially if they don’t get (2008 top recruit) Terrelle Pryor," he said. "I feel like I could go there and play right away. I’m also looking at Florida and LSU. Both of those schools have pretty good depth-chart situations for me."
From the Statesman's Bevo Beat which has been busy today. Scroll down.
Pryor, please say "Go Blue"

Looks like we could really use Pryor going to Michigan.
Damn, you win
I took too long getting the link.
Congrats on your speed
Yeah....
I guess I'm just less impressed with RR than most people. If I had to choose in the unlikely [highly unlikely] scenario of a like, Thunderdome- style recruiting match,
Mack vs. whoever , I would choose Rodriguez without hesitation. Before Tressel and Miles and Meyer and the like. Seems lately there is alot of talk from Michigan fans about Shepard I know, but it's basically because theyre not getting Pryor and they have a hella need at quarterback
I think it's a bunch of daydreaming frankly.
Just because a bunch of folks want it and post about it doesn't mean it's gonna be. If that were the case Tenuta would be D-Coordinator of like 10 schools right now.
Anyway here's hoping Shepard had a good time and it solidified alot of stuff for him.

heh
there goes that, at least he didn't mention any Big12 schools and Mack can point to Chiles and Melton and
Jamaal among others as guys he followd through on.

What has Rick Rodriguez
done in the recruiting department in the past that makes you think he is a recruiting genius?
Richie Rich
Are you saying you don't believe in the power of the ROD?
