Hi Def Hoops. Ticketless for Texas' Big Monday showdown with Texas A&M? Consider heading to one of the dozen movie theaters statewide which will be broadcasting the game - commercial free! - in high definition.

Even as someone who's generally annoyed by the over-ESPNization of sports, I think this is terrific. Get a group together, slip a flask in your boot, and go be social while watching the game. If anyone goes to one of these theaters, give us a report on Tuesday.

"Yaw yaw yaw! Ooglety booglety!" The Aggies have their (newest) replacement for Gary Arnell and it’s another 4-2-5 disciple - Joe Kines, former DC at Alabama. Best known for his barely intelligible halftime interview at last year’s Independence Bowl.

If nothing else, this is an appropriate hire in the sense that it adds another yammering YouTube legend to the Big 12 coaching ranks, nicely complementing Dan "Division 1 Football!" Hawkins, Mike "I'm A Man!" Gundy, Will "Boom Motherf*cker!" Muschamp, and Mike "Yarrrr!" Leach.

Trap game. Tempting as it might be for Texas to look ahead to Monday's huge game against A&M in Austin, the team can't afford to look past Baylor tomorrow in Waco. Ken Pomeroy has Texas as just two point favorites heading in, and though Baylor's hit a rough patch in their season (losers of four of their last five), they surely know their NCAA Tournament lives depend on picking up at least two wins among their final four home games (Texas, Kansas State, Missouri, and A&M).

UT Assistant AD Investigated For... Embezzlement? An odd story on the crime blotter, as Travis County officials are investigating University of Texas Associate Athletic Director Douglas George Wilson in connection with roughly $50,000 to $60,000 in missing money from Texas Relays proceeds. The news blurb linked above provides only the haziest of details, so it's tough to comment on the story just yet. The oddest thing about it all is that investigators either found or expect to find bulks of evidence of the alleged crime in an office at DKR - "a large amount of checks, cashier’s checks, money orders and receipts, all of which were dated between 2003 and 2007, that were ... related to the payment of these entry fees that were not deposited."

It's not totally clear from the report what that means, but I suspect there may be more to this than's being reported right now. If not and this is in fact an embezzling scheme with the evidence is just lying around DKR? Douglas George Wilson deserves a Darwin Award...

Don't Be Quick to Judge

Doug's given a lot of years to the University of Texas and is a standup guy. Just because he was ultimately responsible for what has happened doesn't mean that it was criminal. The relays are something that are run with a lot of volunteers and on a shoestring. Read the actual legal paperwork and you will realize it doesn't add up. The investigation has just begun, let's wait and see what comes out. I am not sure what the purpose of making this public was but it certainly seems that ruining a man's career so prematurely is not the way that my "UT family" normally handles it's business. Just my opinion and two cents.

ps. Go Texas, Beat Baylor!!!

I was trying to note that he'd be a real idiot to have left all the evidence of this supposed crime just sitting in DKR. It sounds weird. Like something's not right here.

Like Doug's either a huge idiot or there's more to this story. I was suggesting that there's probably more to this.

thanks for your comments! I just want to point out to all of the other true burnt orange faithful that it's a shame to roast one of our own before the facts are in. Another case of the media trying the case before it's finalized.

Trap Game

Hell yes I'm nervous about Baylor. The Bears only shot 8 of 25 from 3 at the Erwin Center, but I seem to remember them starting off with a pretty hot hand from BTA. And as we all know, Texas sucks at covering the long ball. Ken Pomeroy's stats pretty much say it all:

Only two schools yield a bigger chunk of its points on treys than Texas does. Ouch. Fortunately several of the other teams at the top of that list are expected to be Final 4 contenders, and as AW noted in his recap of the KU game Gary Johnson continues to improve his perimeter D.

The Texas womens' team got it done against the Bears on Wednesday. The men need to step up to secure this one in comfortable fashion so they can get some rest before the revenge game against the Aggies on Monday.

So if perimeter D is one of the keys to the game, what are the others? Augustin finding his shot would be a good one. Suggestions for the third?

Don't play down to the Bears

I would really like to see this team come in and play something close to the level they're capable of playing, instead of the level Baylor plays. They are going to be crazy about beating us, as usual. We can't expect to win at the last second on the road.

hate to contradict you, Peter, or aorist, ftm,

but Joe Kines is a 4-3/3-3-5 guy, not a 4-2-5 guy.

Everybody loves animations, here's his 3-3-5 running a 5 under cover 3

As a fan of the 33 Stack, I'm thrilled with the hire of Kines, partly b/c of the diversity of scheme we'll be running, and partly b/c he's an old school coach who emphasizes discipline and fundamentals.
Anyone who watched A&M the last two seasons knows our defense was severely lacking in the core fundamentals, like form tackling. It is my hope that Kines can help us fix that.
