Off Topic - Breakfast Tacos in Austin

Sorry for this post. But this past weekend when I was in Austin, I tried Cisco's on East 6th, because it was reccomended on this website. I had a potato, egg, and cheese taco and a bean, egg, and cheese taco. They were pretty good, better than Juan in a Million, but they were no where near as good as Taco Xpress tacos. I crave those tacos everyday. Damn, I could go for some right now. Again, sorry for this, I just wanted to throw my 2 cents out there.

Best carne guisada anywhere

at Mi Madres.  I'll be in Austin this weekend for the o.u. game.  I'll find out if it's still there and still as good.

Texas honey ham
if you can stand the westlakers long enough to get their breakfast burritos, they are by and large the best in Austin. On bee caves and westbank by the wells Fargo.

I'm A Joker, but

...when it comes to good food, I'm serious.

Maria's (Taco Xpress) is awesome, no doubt about it. Mi Madres, eh...I can take it or leave it.  But, I'm telling y'all (and I know this is going to sound really really stupid) there's this older mexican woman that makes breakfast tacos in a little catering trailer next to an Exxon station waaaaay down FM969 heading into Webberville. Buck fitty per. (I live between Webberville and Bastrop so I take the road into Austin every morning.)

Man, she makes the tacos from scratch - right there in front of you, we're talking cracking the eggs open, grinding the chorizo, and dicing the potatoes - throwing everything into a seasoned iron skillet, grease popping in her face and shit. Whew...man. The chorizo tacos are friggin' - nay, FUCKING brilliant. Whoa. It's lunchtime!

Where's Taco Xpress?

It's been a while since I lived in Austin.

by NYCHorn on Feb 20, 2008 12:07 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

It's

Located on S. Lamar. Been around there for awhile. But it moved from it's original hole-in-the-wall location to a spot behind a new Walgreens. So, you can get your tacos and THEN get some Rolaids afterwards!

All about the Taco Shack

I live near campus and so Taco Shack at 29th and Guadalupe is easily my favorite.  A few Sundays ago I was forced to venture elsewhere (Taco Shack is closed on Sundays), and I had heard about Maria's from this site so I decided to head over with a friend and try it out (I rarely venture more than 20 blocks away from campus except for Top Notch).

So I get there and am greeted with a nice 20 minute line out the back.  Alright, well we went on a mission to try this place and we weren't going to back out just for some line.  It wasn't too bad I guess, we ran into a girl from freshman year dorms who had really taken the whole hippie thing to heart (looked like the stereotypical '69 Woodstock hippie).  It was interesting getting a refresher on the whole "Keep Austin Weird" slogan.  So we finally order, wait another 10 minutes, and then our food arrives.

I always order 1 bacon, egg and cheese and 2 potato, egg and cheese.  The potato one was delicious, but not anything extraordinary.  The single reason why I will never go back though is because of the bacon one.  I opened it up to find one single strip of bacon.  One.  It's not like I'm ordering shrimp or lobster.  This isn't fucking swordfish.  It's a pig.  A package costs like a buck.  It was just insulting.

With this whole ordeal I just decided it wasn't worth driving 50 blocks south, so Taco Shack will have to do. I recommend you try it.

BTW, Maria's is at S Lamar and 25th roughly

All the above are good but, like Ryan, I will take Taco Shack.  Great and fast.

nothing like a don juan to sop up after a night of heavy drinking...not to mention Juan's high fives.

A few others...

Salivating and hungry for dinner right now...no tacos in sight.

A few that haven't already been mentioned

If you're ever near the airport that time of day - El Meson on Burleson.

Taqueria Aranadas - I frequented the one on Burnet, just north of 2222.  Oh, crap and get a torta milenesa for me too.  Or some pozole.

Love Mexican food.

All of those places are pretty good, but the best place is Chipolte. Although, they don't serve tacos, Chipolte is the best chain mexican food restaurant place out there.

Seriously?

Chains have nothing on the hole in the wall places for breakfast tacos.  Besides, the two best taco chains are cabana and freebirds.

Taco Shack went Downhill

I used to eat at Taco Shack almost everyday when I worked at Breed & Co. on 29th. It used to be delicious. I went back about a year ago, and the it was just bad. The taco was not as good and they changed the salsa to something awful. Maybe I just went on a bad day, I don't know.

At Taco Xpress, the only way to go is with potato, egg, and cheese tacos, and a margarita to wash it down.

Also, Freebirds sucks. Their food is always salty and bland. I would take Chipotle over Freebirds any day of the week.

My adopted son Vondrell is growing up so fast!

Taco Shack blows now. A whole bunch of my friends got really sick recently eating them. They're fairly pricey too.

El Chilito on Manor Road and Taco Deli are my new favorites. The Mexican joints on Airport blvd are pretty good but you gotta have cash on you which I rarely do.

El Chilito though, mmmmmmmmmm.

by Blitzburgh on Feb 20, 2008 1:33 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

El Chilito

Really? I've heard conflicting reviews. What kinda taco? In my mind, the quality of the migas will be representative of the quality on the rest of the menu. Like enchiladas should ALWAYS be the ruler to measure the menu at a good Mexican or Tex-Mex place.

I'll have to swing by the joint on my way to work.

by Bombilla on Feb 20, 2008 1:36 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

yea man

Though I will say that their lunch and dinner tacos are probably a touch better than their breakfast tacos. Just good fresh ingredients all the way around though.

Migas are pretty good.

Id take Taco Deli for breakfast and El Chilito for lunch in a perfect world.

by Blitzburgh on Feb 20, 2008 1:40 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

yep

El Chilito's lunch/dinner tacos are better than their breakfast tacos.  My favorite taco they have is the Cochinita Pibil.

by crocodile235 on Feb 20, 2008 2:55 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

which one is that

I just get the puffy tacos with beef and the fish tacos. Their true spanish names are beyond me at the moment. The fish tacos are awesome and I usually dont like fish tacos.

by Blitzburgh on Feb 20, 2008 3:20 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Cochinita Pibil

"Yucatan style braised pork with orange and achiote."

I might add:
"and some kick-ass marianated, pickled red onions."

Best on a corn tortilla.

Yeah, I like the fish tacos a lot, too.

El Chilito's Charlies Special Burrito is damn goo

d nad the chipotle salsa is the perfect complement.  Two of those and a lemonade make for a great Sunday morning...

El Chile

The same guys own El Chile right down the street and it is definitely worth a try. Their margaritas are great are worth the trip alone.

their ritas are the shit. Chilango is my favorite. Nice and spicy. Both those places were started by former sous chefs at Jeffrey's. They know what theyre doing.

Taco Deli

Makes pretty solid breakfast tacos.  And lunch tacos, for that matter.

What I really love is the Salt Lick Breakfast Taco stand at the airport.  Brisket + eggs + bbq sauce, so good.  It makes early morning flights much more bearable.

by Meekrob on Feb 20, 2008 1:30 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

Definitely Taco Shack
That place is too good. I usually don't want to take the drive all the way towards Medical, so I buy them from Dominican Joe on S. Congress & Riverside. Definitely recommend the green sauce if you get a taco.

by longhornricky on Feb 20, 2008 1:31 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

Tacos

Taco Deli is mighty damn good, but I usually stick to the meat-related tacos there.

Seriously, the best tacos I have had are at a place called Zapata's in Taylor.  Home-made tortillas, home-made salsa, and it is absolutely the best.

Taco Shack - has gone way downhill.  Sorry.

If you are going to make them at home, this is the way to do it:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-XMTW...

Close to how I make mine, though I don't exactly have enough time to make tortillas from scratch.

Not even a debate...

The best breakfast tacos are from Tamale House. Hands down!

by saveadre on Feb 20, 2008 2:32 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

For my money...

Taco Bell rules all.

Actually, the best tacos anywhere on the planet can be found right across from Dulles High at Soliz Casa Del Tacos. Can BZ, or any other Sugar Landers on this site, help me validate this claim?

i've actually never been

despite driving past it constantly as i was growing up.  i've heard nothing but phenomenal things though.  it's definitely got that hole in the wall vibe.  do they still have the patio furniture-looking tables/chairs outside?  it's been awhile.

Do you guys eat at Lopez?

on Wilcrest - near 59? I used to eat at the old one back in the 80's, but have only been to the new expanded location a couple of times and not recently. Not for tacos, per se, but it was damn good Tex-Mex back in the day. It reminded me a lot of the old Matt's in Austin, on Town Lake.

I can promise y'all that after this diary I'm Tex-Mex-bound for happy hour.

Re:

It's practically religion to any kid that went to Dulles. What's amazing is that everyone I know has a different favorite taco. For example, mine's the 17 with cheese (which is beef fajitas, onions and cheese). If you're ever back in SL, I suggest dropping in.

don't laugh...

But I've been sampling lots of breakfast tacos since I moved back to Austin and some of the best are at Dan's Hamburgers.  For real.

Matter of fact, their entire breakfast menu rules.

i believe it

Fancy doesnt always mean better. Dan's is good grub. Always has been, always will. I like a little variety with my breakfast tacos, but on any given (hungover) day, Dan's would hit the spot.

Maudies

Pete's tantalizing tacos are my favorite.

Their migas is tasty as well.

by Wells on Feb 20, 2008 5:01 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

Right place wrong taco

The Tatiana's Tamale tacos are the best there. We have one across the parking lot, here in south Austin, from where I work, best thing for Saturday morning shifts.

Chipolte is definitely crap. Freebirds is alright, but Taco Shack's burrito is just as good and like a buck 50 cheaper. Mission Burrito in Houston kicks Freebirds' ass though. Taco Milagro was my favorite place in Houston (own by the same people as Cafe Express). I've heard good things about the Texican Cafe off of Manchaca.

by afaeguy on Feb 20, 2008 9:12 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

My 2 cents

I have to agree with those of you that think the Don Juan at Juan in a Million is the best. You get practically 3 or 4 tacos for 3 bucks.

I live on Manor and I've been to all the Tex Mex places around here, but never for breakfast. Personally I was pretty dissapointed by el chilto. However, el Chile is fantastic.

My personal favorite breakfast tacos can be found in Giddings on 290 on the way to Houston.  The place is called La Taqueria Chihuahua and it's on the left side of the road close to the end of the town if you are heading to Houston.  It used to be in a little orange trailer but recently moved into a bigger building right next to it. Cant be beat.

Get on over to La Reyna

I know you college kids don't get away from campus too often, but do yourself a favor, and head over to La Reyna over on South First (across the street from the Soup Peddler).

It's seriously good homemade, old-style Mexican food served up at a family-owned dive. There's a reason that you'll be the only gringo in their on most occasions.

Their homemade tortillas are so good, they'll make you cry.

It's not just their breakfast tacos, either, but everything they serve there...it's amazing food, and it's really cheap too.

There's no such thing...

as a breakfast taco in Baton Rouge, which means I have to make my own. I can't find good chorizo either. It's a good thing cajun food is so good, otherwise I'd go nuts.

you get the MIGAS. They are simply amazing.
