Finley's 40 time
wow....Finley's 40 time was abysmal 4.82.....
NFL combine TE 40 time

This is definitely going to kill his draft stock...if he was a projected 2nd-3rd rounder, now I see him as late second day pick....
They say 40 time is not everything, but 4.82??? we all know how athletic he is...but still.
His 40 time was the last in TE group...WOW
should have stayed in school Jermichael....sigh...

Meh
I'm on the side of those who don't really care about the NFL Combine and all these measurements.

Saw an article where...
Finley said a big reason for his leaving early was UT's inability to get him the ball more often.
Can't fault him for leaving, but I'm sure he understands a lot of that had to do with Colt running for his life all the time with a very young and banged up O-Line.
No doubt Finley's carreer at UT would have been a lot more like David Thomas' if Colt had had the same time in the pocket Vince had.
As for the 40 time, I'd say Finley got a little too fat and happy over the holidays...if he does drop to day two, he'll be a steal for some team as I'd imagine he'll regain his athletic prowess once he gets back on a strict work-out regimen.

what article?
I heard the reason he went early was b/c kid #2 is on the way.
Hard to support a family of 4 on a Pell Grant.

He wasn't last
He was 8th among TEs. See here.
There were 19 TEs in total.
It is a disappointing time, but its not the worst. He will run again at the Texas pro day next month if he wasn't happy with his combine time.
by BigTexBD on Feb 23, 2008 9:10 PM CST 0 recs
same link
My mistake. But on that site you can go to a list of all participants to see what TEs worked out.

Weird that they list him as 8th
During the combine, watched it on NFL Network, they showed him as 10th. Wonder what happened to the other 2 guys that were ahead of him.

Finley NOT the slowest TE
Finley was #10 in the top 10 fastest 40 times for the TEs. ND's TE, cant remember his name, was slower than Finley. The real problem with Finley's time is that he's not a blocking TE, he's more a slow slot receiver. So everbody was surprised at his time, they were expecting him to be faster.
But they did like what he did in the ball catching drills, unlike Fred Davis, USC TE, who dropped so many balls he looked like a lineman trying to catch a tipped ball.
by AgentBurntOrange on Feb 23, 2008 9:15 PM CST 0 recs
you're exactly right
about it being more important for him because he's not a blocking TE. i dont think it'll cause him to fall too much since he did well in the others, so he's still in the round 3-4 range

staying in school
wasn't going to help his 40 time...

I really....
.....find it disappointing that a good number of Longhorn "fans" are actually rooting against one of our young players. With children to care for, J-Mike needed to make this decision for the benefit of his family.
Given the fact the guy was running consistent 4.6's his senior season of HS, it's never a surprise to see one of MadDog's disciples getting slower under his tutelage. J-Mike was good enough to draw an offer to play B-ball for Lute Olson at Arizona. Now he's running one of the slower times, for a TE, in the combine.
I said it when he hit campus prior to his freshman season and I repeat it now. J-Mike should have been lined up as the X-receiver. Most programs will take a 6'4/5" receiver with 4.6 speed to the X and work to improve his speed. Meanwhile, we let MadDog put 30 pounds on the guy, make him slower, tell him to block 270lbs. DEs and then wonder in bewilderment as he complains about his utilization.
This game is about speed and for the life of me I don't understand why it is McDavis doesn't fully understand that point.
by HornChamps on Feb 23, 2008 10:56 PM CST 0 recs
I for one
do not root against him at all. But I do not give a sh*t about him no more. If he had given his children as the reason of leaving school, it would have been a different story.

speed
I disagree. Is it better to be a slower than typical WR or a faster than typical TE? The pro game has gone in the direction of TEs being more like big bodied WRs (see Antonio gates, Tony Gonzalez, etc). Let's just hope that Finley can rebound with a faster time at our Pro day. If not, as a Saints fan, I'd be thrilled if he fell to us in the later rounds.

X Receiver
He wouldn't have had many balls thrown his way as an X either. Limas Sweed was the X the 2 years Finley played, so making him a wideout wouldn't have gotten him too many more opportunities. As for a slow speed at this stupid combine; WHO CARES?? The guy is a mega talent and anyone who wants to question his speed can watch the OU game again and watch him nearly outrun OU's secondary to the end zone.

While I not as sure
it is the coaches fault that he is running slower, I do agree with HC that it is disappointing that any longhorn would root against J-Mike.
He gave three years of his life to this program and made some great catches along the way. Don't throw him under the bus for one bad comment to a reporter. I am sure we all made some remarks in our early twenties that we would not want reported to the nation.

If Finley can dish it
...Then I'd hope he'd be able to take it.
He's no longer an athlete at Texas, he wants to be a professional. He's gonna be subject to criticism.
Let me get this straight, its NOT OK to "root against" Finley, but perfectly OK to root against "McDavis?"
Your just disappointed that a horde of players didn't line up behind him when he threw GD under the bus to take their shots as well.
The funny thing is that all of you Davis-haters this time last year wanted Texas to run more of a downhill running game despite losing a load off the O-line. He did just that, but to do so required blockers. TE's the easiest place to pick up an extra blocker. The scheme they ran previously under VY didn't require as much blocking from the TE, it was about receivers blocking downfield, which freed Thomas to make plays for his QB. And now you think it was "terrible utilization" by Davis? Come on, get off your damn soapbox.
We go through this every year. When are you people gonna learn that the guy's gonna be here as long as Mack is at the helm of this team.
As for Finley, as see him the same as Todd Dodge now. It's cool he played for UT, but I just can't respect him after some of the things he's said.

Totally agree...
I'm still rooting for Finley to succeed in the NFL, and I'm not sure why Horns fans are rooting against him.
I do find it slightly humorous, though, that you find it disappointing when we root against our players, but you have absolutely no qualms about voicing extreme displeasure over our coaching staff and administration. I know, salaried-employees and "I'm a man! I'm 40!" and what not, but it's still an interesting contrast.

Slowest TE
It says here that he was the slowest of the 8 TEs that ran the 40...
by Texas Wahoo on Feb 24, 2008 4:38 AM CST 0 recs
Lets play misinformation!
Yeah, the person who wrote that blog just checked the top performers link that BigTex posted as their sole source of info. Believe me more than 8 TEs ran the 40, if not everyone did. If that person had actually watched the combine they would have seen that Finley was not the slowest.

Sweed = 4.46
For his first 40, had a 35" vertical. His group is about to run again and I think Sweed has a chance to run a faster time, he didn't look pleased with his first run.
Pittman ran a 4.76, ouch, hopefully he can shave off .21 for his second run.
I'll post Jamaal's numbers when I see them.

Martellus Bennett
Dude is a beast. why is he not projected as a 1st rounder? He is a monster blocker and led the agros in receptions. 6'7" and runs a 4.68? Ridiculous. Maybe he has a me first attitude, but I dont recall him being locker room poisen or a crook.

Jermichael's chip
Jermichael and Jamaal both played with chips on their shoulders and not the good kind either. Fortunatley Jamaal was extremely talented and he helped as did Jermichael at times, but these two alienated themselves from the team and their dismeanor really hurt the team concept. No wonder Mack was not sad to see them go.

How do you know what Mack was thinking?
I bet Mack would have loved to have both of them back next year.

WHAAAAAAT?
You think Mack wasn't upset about seeing Jamaal and Finley go? Are you HIGH? Yes, you're high, but you obviously can't admit that because, well...you're high.
Finley himself said that he decided to go early into the draft - NOT because of his 2 kids, but because GD wasn't utilizing him.
Wow...It looks like Kool-Aid season is starting early!

Thanks for proving my point
He left cuz he felt unappreciated. Emphasis on HE felt, not the team, he. Yeah he had potential but he could not accept his role, thus the chip on his shoulder.
