Rundown of the First 2 Practices
I was able to attend both of our open practices on Friday & Saturday so here's a short run down of some observations, etc.
Here's a bit of a rundown of Friday's and Saturday's practice;
- young DB's look great. Chykie Brown is looking like our best DB right now, he's all over the field. Wells and Thomas are the first team safeties right now during 7-7. 11-11.
- the backup QB's have a way to go. they made some good throws and some pretty bad throws. Colt looks pretty good considering the lack of time he's had with the newer WR's
- Malcolm Williams is definitely starting to separate from the pack. I don't know if i've ever seen a 6'3" 225 lb WR run like that.
- Buckner looks good too, made some nice catches today (Saturday).
- First team defensive line consisted of Houston, Miller, Alexander, and Orakpo
- On friday, Muschamp ran a 4-2-5, Nickel look almost the entire time rotating LB groups. Group 1 was Muck and Bobino. Group 2 was Norton and Robinson.
- Keenan Robinson has grown and certainly passed the eyeball test, the man was stellar in coverage.
- Shipley looks like hes finally gotten his first injury-free offseason, you can definitely tell he's improved a lot.
- Cody Johnson looks like a TANK
- Fozzy has shown tremendous speed and agility while looking bigger as well. But you can definitely tell that McGee is the best 'back on the team. Fozzy is looking more and more like he'll be assuming the Ramonce Taylor role.
- Beasley looked great in coverage as well. If you're looking at just the last 2 practices, Palmer is the third corner right now. Chykie was covering Quan and he had absolutely no way of getting by him. STUD
- INJURY REPORT: Curtis Brown had arthroscopic knee surgery a couple days ago, it's not serious as he was seen walking around during practice. However, he did have a limp. Mack has said he'll be back for the last 8 practices. Sergio was also seen walking around with a limp. But good news is that he's walking.
- The Lb's look like they will not be a problem this year as Muschamp sent Robinson, Muck, and Norton as the "first" team for Saturday's 11-11's. On the 2nd day, Bobino was sent out as first team but was frequently spelled by Robinson
***Another nice little nugget about Muschamp;
- During the first day, Muckelroy picked off Colt and ran it back for a touchdown. Coach Muschamp trailed the defense down the field and got right into the middle of the celebration. I think we found a keeper.

Thanks for the update
Great update. I'm a bit surprised about the comments re: Chykie, considering the reports of him being a slacker and on-field evidence of him running around last year without any apparent purpose.

it's very surprising..
Chykie is playing like a man possessed. He was matched up on Quan on the outside, and there was absolutely nothing Cosby could do to get by him.
It would appear that him and Beasley are playing with a very high level of confidence and are reacting rather than thinking too much. Definitely bodes well for the coming season.

Thanks for the updates
for those of us unfortunate enough to have to live away from Austin, these updates are great.
I think keeping Muschamp around is more about how long he wants to stay before becoming a head coach.

Ramonce's Role
Does that mean Fozzy's gonna get busted with a pound of weed and a weapons cache?

Just a point
It's legal to roll with weapons in the car in Texas (I carry a .38 in my car). Pot? Well, we're still working on that one...

When was the incident for Ramonce?
Because if he was under 21, then handguns are still a no-no. Otherwise, you are correct about the great state we live in.

Really?
I didn't know that 21 was the age-limit for a handgun. Is that for possession or purchase?

re: possession or purchase
I believe it covers both. But there is probably something regarding "direct supervision of an adult", as I was never arrested at the gun range when I was a kid.
Aren't there a disproportionate number of lawyers hanging around BON? One of them is bound to know what the Texas Penal Code states in reference to this subject.
Disclaimer: I may be wrong.

Killing Cats
I was curious, so I did a bit of digging.
It is OK to possess a handgun if 18 or older according to federal law. However, there is the tricky part where Texas does not allow a hangun to be carried (unless w/ a concealed license). Apparently it gets really complicated after this part. I'll leave it to the lawyers for interpretation.

Apparently...
That very topic has come up quite often in the Texas courts. My understanding is that (without a CCL) if a handgun is in the car with you and is not definitively "out of reach", then it falls under the illegal carry definition.
However, it is apparently written in the Texas Penal Code that it's OK to have a handgun (unloaded) in the car with you when travelling to or from a sporting event (shooting at the range) or a hunting trip. But I believe that the burden of proof is on you for that.
It is also OK if you are "travelling". This is apparently where things get a bit complicated, as there is no set definition in the law of "travel" regarding to handguns. My understanding is that as of recently in the courts, the burden of proof is on the state. So they have to demonstrate in court that you were not travelling, instead of you having to prove that you were.
Word of advice....one should just go get a CCL if 21 or older. It solves a lot of these issues, and you learn quite a bit about the laws surrounding this topic.
But back to the original conversation that brought this topic out. If Ramonce had the gun loaded and it was not "out of reach" (aka in the trunk), and he was not 21 w/ a Texas CCL, then he was in violation.

Just thought this was funny...
I've got a buddy who refs on the middle and high school level. He had the oppurtunity to ref the UT practices. I told him he totally should have done it. He's such a huge UT fan, though, he said that if he accidentally blew the whistle late and a player got injured, he couldn't live with himself.
Also, thanks for putting these reports up. They're much appreciated.

could anyone fill me in on...
until how long practices are open to the public? I was able to make it to last friday's and am hoping to get in on a few more.

no more
I think that just those two (Friday and Saturday) practices were open to the public. This fall, two more will be, far as I know.

Cool...
I'm stoked about the 4-2-5. Do you remember who the front four was when Muck and Bobino were playing LB? Was Chykie in at safety??
Thanks for the info mvp!
