This is a special team Vol. 3
A few quick thoughts before the Horns head to Manhattan to take on Michael Beasley and his likely tournament-bound Wildcats.
1) A thought-provoking diary earlier in the week by longhorn00 comparing DJ vs. TJ Ford. The peanut gallery seems to come down on the side of TJ, and there's certainly reasons to support that assesment. I don't think the comparison is apples to apples because of their contrasting styles of play, but let's take a look at the numbers to see if there's any glaring differences. To the numbers, which of course, don't tell the whole story. Before I share, allow me to ask you (don't cheat), where do you expect TJ to beat out DJ statistically? I'm guessing you said A) assists B) steals C) wins vs. losses
Let's take a look to see if you (and I, because that's what I thought as well too before looking) were right:
TJ (two-year averages here, guys): Pts per game: 12.9; Assists per game: 8.0; Turnovers per game: 3.6!; FG%, 3PT FG %, FT %: .406%, .228%, .801%.; Steals per game: 2.09 (nice)
DJ: Pts per game: 16.5; Assists per game: 6.4; Turnovers per game: 3.0 (also a lot); FG%, 3PT FG%, FT%: 44.2%, 39.4%, 81.8%; Steals per Game: 1.4
So, what to make of that data? Well, DJ's a better shooter, no doubt about that. We'll always remember TJ has the ultimate distributor, a guy that made his teamates better every night. True, but DJ ain't too shabby himself distributing. It basically comes down to immeasurables: i.e. competitive greatness and the ability to carry a team on your back in the toughest of times. TJ was able to do so in a Final Four run (albeit one, I'd argue, that was one of the easier Final Four paths in recent memory). We'll see if DJ can replicate that success and cement his name in UT lore as one of the all-time greats.
2) Not much to say about the OU game. I mentioned last entry that I wasn't worried about OU. They're just not very good. How many times did they blindly throw the ball up at the rim, only to have it riccochet violently off the backboard, barely resembling a FG attempt? You can throw your hands in the air all you want Mr. Capel. It still won't change the fact that you've got the absolute most unsinspiring team in the top 30 of the RPI. If they get in, which they probably will due to their favorable schedule down the stretch, I can't see this team getting out of the 1st round. Texas handled business just fine on Saturday, something that we might not have been able to expect a few months ago. Now? We're blowing out teams we should.
3) Now, a few thoughts on Monday's game. I noticed an 'argument' between two BONers about what tomorrow night's game would mean for Texas if we were to win. Someone posited that a W would truly indicate we were ready to make a deep run in March. The counter argument was 'how can one game mean anything, one way or the other?' Both fair points, but here's why I agree with the initial assesment. Remember last March when we lost to USC decidedly? Remember why we got our butts handed to us? I do. They were more physical, much meaner and nasty, and really had no trouble getting inside our heads in the first 10-15 minutes of the ball game. I see Kansas State as very similar to the Trojans of last year. Sure, USC may not have sported the National Player of the Year as KSU does, but they are similarly thugtastic, equally agressive and physical, and just as capable of putting you away early and often if you don't counter-punch in the first half (especially at home, where they've absolutely obliterated people, as was mentioned in a previous post by either PB or AW).
If we win tomorrow night, I'll have the last piece of evidence that tells me we have what it takes to win it all this year. We can run with the best of them, our defense is sound against teams that aren't accomplished offensively, and we have multiple go-to-guys in late-game situations. What we haven't done, is beat teams that can both score and play dirty, tough-nosed basketball. UCLA and Tennessee were our last opportunites to play teams that might fit into that category, but December basketball is a whole different animal than late February and March. When AJ and DJ have it going on, it's obvious we can beat anybody. And clearly our impressive out-of-conference wins prove we can beat anybody anywhere. But we really haven't been tested by a team that's nasty and tough, yet still has the basketball skills to actually score buckets in quite some time. Sure, we've been tested. The Big 12s no easy gauntlet to navigate. But really, other than Kansas, have we faced a team that can match us physically and still run up and down the court and score in bunches? OU sure can't run with us. A&M's proven their offense leaves more than a little to be desired. Tech's athletes can't hang, nor can Baylor's. Mizzou got hot and took us down, but that's just going to happen on the road at least once a year in a power conference. Tomorrow night's game is a great measuring points for the following things: 1) Damion James' ability to shine against the best. You better be ready to defend and score tomorrow. Contain Beasley and consider yourself a rich, rich man as soon as you say when Mr. James. 2) Can we handle a a hostile crowd and stay within ourselves as we have in our recent winning streak? Can Abrams avoid the temptation to jack it up if we get down by 9 early? If he can't that lead can quickly extend to 15. Can Augustin find himself good shots or will he attempt the impossible? 3) Gary Johnson. We've been singing your praises for awhile now. Time to show you're here to stay with a big showing when the stakes are high and the pressure is on. 4) Rick, what a job you've done. Some call you not the best in-game tactician. Prove them wrong.
Here we are with a conference championship on the line. KSU coming off a loss, surely looking to bounce back. Beasley red-hot. I'd guess Vegas has KSU as at least 3-5 point favorites.. What a great opportunity for this team. When the '05 football champions were presented with similar opportunities, they responded, most times in a huge way. When the '07 football team had similar opportunites (vs. KSU, A&M), they folded. Can't wait to see how this basketball team responds tomorrow night.
My prediction? We win another high-scoring entertaining affair. I think our defense is playing too well right now to lose to a Wildcats team that may be able to light up the scoreboard behind Beasley, but still struggles themselves to stop anybody. Remind any one of last year's Horns team when Durant played Beasley's role? I sure would like to add my fourth entry to this series Tuesday morning after an impressive road win in Manhattan, a win that would all but secure an outright Big 12 championship, a #1 seed in Kansas City, and an inside track to a #1 seed in whatever bracket we happened to be placed in on Selection Sunday.
HOOK EM.

Who guards Beasley?
One of those times when you know Wingman's length would help "bother" Beasley but his experience would end up getting 40 dropped on him. You hate to pull Conner that far away from the basket. Damion would get shot over all night. 2-3 Zone? Triangle and 2? What's the solution?
I believe when this is answered it will be extremely indicative of how the tourny run will be. When we beat 3 of the top 10 teams in the nation, we bowed up and didn't allow ourselves to be pushed around. If someone steps up and does that to Beasley, we'll now the heart and fortitude of this team and how they rise to the occasion.
As a side note, March madness gives me a boner.

Did you see the Baylor/KSU game?
Beasley went wild for like 44, and Bill Walker had like 31. And the entire rest of the team scored about 11. And Baylor won. Remember last year when Durant dropped 25 in the first half on Kansas and KU still won? One player can't beat a good team.
My feeling is that we play Beasley straight-up with a rotation of Damion, Gary Johnson and Mason. Give him different looks, and perhaps double him if he posts up, but don't sacrifice the game to hold him below 20 points. If Beasley can score 75 points all on his own and beat Texas, fair play to him. But here's betting he can't. And outside of Bill Walker, he doesn't have a lot of help offensively.

Play to our defensive strengths
Beasley averages only 1.3 assists per game. I like Damion guarding Bill Walker for most of the game, and rotating players guarding Beasley so the player guarding him always has a lot of energy. I say we play to our team strengths and collapse on him. We have very quick bigs who can defend the weakside well, and this has proved to be our strength on defense in the recent games. He'll probably still get his but definitely not 40. We should make him kick it out to their other players (who are far inferior).

agreed
Good thoughts.
I just mentioned Damion vs. Beasley because I think the two of them are going to be battling for lots of boards down there. No way Barnes leaves him all alone on Beasley, but I do think that in transition and on the glass, the two of them will face off plenty.
Can't wait.

Beasley
How is Beasley going to take getting stuffed by Connor at least twice?
Not well probably.
by jimmer on Feb 25, 2008 11:56 AM CST up reply actions 0 recs
hehe
I wonder if Connor's mom still reads the blog? Wasn't it her who complained about the overly critical tone showed towards her son last year? Was it whoopspat who overheard this?
Anyway, she must be all smiles if she does still read along.

Yeah
But JD's mom is probably still pretty pissed.

surely by now
JD's mom knows that her son sucks at basketball.

My brain hurts...
the juxtaposition of your analysis if the game to Chum's...my feeble mind can't handle it.

Nice write up
Personally, I think this is a very losable game and I will be happy if the final score is close and we play solid. Of course a win says a lot, but I think we can lose this game and still be a really scary team in the tournament.
We have been on a run and KSU has lost on the road. And they should be really pumped up to play Texas in their own house on national TV.
A win does put us in excellent position for the outright conference title and a possible 1 seed in the tournament.

Need AJ tonight
Our team D more than made up for a very ho-hum offensive effort on Saturday at the Drum. If they play that way on offense tonight they will lose on the road, even if the D shows up. Nothing quiets a hostile crowd like a few 3 balls, so here's hoping AJ just had an off day on Saturday and rights the stroke tonight.
2 cent prediction:
Beasley drops 30+ but the Horns keep Walker in check. 2 double/doubles by the DJs and another stat sheet filler by Connor power the Horns to a close win, 72-66. AJ, DJ, DJ, GJ, CA all in double digits.

yeah
Need to put of many more points to win tonight. As for Saturday, I'll say that I personally think OU just has a waty to bring you down to their level. Theyre so pathetic offensively, yet theyre somewhat competitive. They do so by playing aggressive hard-nosed D. Their crappy offense and D makes it hard to find any ryhthm. I don't think KSU plays as good on defense and they definitely allow for more of a 'flow' to be established in a game due to their ability to score in bunches.
I think this one will be in the 80s or upper 70s. Shit, Baylor hung 90+ on them. We should be able to do something similar.

Called it
Good one, you were absolutely right. No way we would've won at Kansas State without AJ getting his.

Intangibles
No hard facts to back this up, and only my memory to go back on, so here goes.
Why I claim TJ was the better point guard, and perhaps the best point guard we will ever have, comes down to two purely subjective impressions.
- I remember him getting double team pressed in the backcourt and beating it, regularly. I remember laughing in the final four run when people would press TJ, because that just meant a 3 on 5 on the other end.
- I remember thinking, we are good when hes scoring, we are awesome when hes passing. I remember our best games as a team, where when TJ had 8-10 points, and ramped up his assists. Our tough wins were when he had 18-20 for the game, as he took the team on his back in the last 10 minutes, driving and getting to the line.

I think it gets back
to apples to oranges comparison.
TJ is the best pure point guard I have ever seen at Texas.
DJ is a great scorer and runs the offense well, but is not quite as good at the pure point guard skills.
Which would I choose to lead my team? I don't know, can I have both, with Aldridge, KD, and Gibson filling out my starting 5?
by Wells on Feb 25, 2008 2:20 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
Well..
They both play point, so its not entirely apples to oranges.
If I can have only one point guard, Ill take TJ.
I agree they have different skillsets, the OP supports that as well, and DJ could be a really fun to watch shooting guard if you paired him with a stronger point guard, mainly because its tough to find someone who is a better point guard. However, TJ your not running him not at point ever, and you would be foolish not to.
Mason running the point works as a good change of pace for DJ for example, I dont remember TJ ever not being point while he was on the floor.

Whoa
Too many negatives, try to figure the point of THAT sentence out.
Ok I go back to work now...
by BoddickerIsClutch on Feb 25, 2008 2:31 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
The other thing is
When TJ wasn't on the floor, the offense fell apart. I remember one game in the tourney, Connecticut maybe, where TJ got in foul trouble I think and sat for a few minutes, and our lead just evaporated in no time. The offense couldn't do anything and even our defense seemed to suffer. TJ came back in and we roared right back. In RPG terms, TJ has a +5 aura of badassicity.
DJ's a fantastic player, but I'd take TJ for his greater impact on the team as a whole. I'd also take TJ over Durant, but I could just be blinded by my love for the little guy.
by Meekrob on Feb 25, 2008 2:52 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
fair enough
All good enough points. I do remember that UCONN game and you're absolutely right, things fell apart when he wasnt out there.
Hard to say if that would or would not happen if DJ wasnt out there in a big game. He does play nearly 40 minutes a game, so no data supporting either way.
Your points do lend support to one thing I've been mulling over and discussing with PB: which team is better, this year's or the Final Four team. If the team was totally reliant on TJ, perhaps you'd have to say this year's team, as we've been able to win big games even when DJs played very poorly.

Id probably give the nod
To this years team.
I think the overall talent level is higher. I also think Barnes has done an exceptional job this year with his talent.
Its really hard not to love this team with our last 2 outtings. Our supposed weakness in depth has seemed to disappear as we get quality minutes where they have been needed, and our starters look like they can own anyone else's group, working great as a team on defense, and running the offense as more than DJ trying to create his shot.
Also don't get me wrong, when Im saying Id rather have TJ, thats a huge bar to set to, it doesn't mean I think DJ is that far behind. Just because Id rather have Walter Payton doesn't mean Id turn down Barry Sanders.
/cue possible derailment.
