Barnes Dream Team

A lot of people on this board have announced their love for Barnes as of recent. Like any coach he has weaknesses as well, but in my opinion he's addressed them very successfully this season. As noted by AW his gameplans have been great this year, when previously they seemed hit or miss. We're all excited about the Horns chances of winning the outright Big 12 championship this year, and the only other time we did that was in Barnes' first year as head coach, when he coached a seemingly subpar team to the conference championship. Lack of depth resulted in a season ending choke, but I ramble now. Barnes has produced excellent players over the years, some great coming in and some developing in the program. Who would you pick for your 13 scholarship players on Barnes' dream team (taking into account college play, not NBA)? Here's mine:

Star-divide

Starters:
Point- TJ Ford (I'll take a distributor over a high scoring point guard when there are so many other options)
G- Maurice Evans (great scorer who's only weakness was creating shots for himself, which won't be needed here)
G/F- Kevin Durant
F- Lamarcus Aldridge
C- Chris Mihm

Bench:
Point- DJ Augustin
PG/G- Daniel Gibson
G- Royal Ivey (most all-around outstanding guard we've had)
G- AJ Abrams (every great team needs a lights out shooter)
G/F Damion James (I'll take his better rebounding over Clack's slightly more phenomenal dunks: http://video.google.com/videoplay?do... )
F- PJ Tucker
F- James Thomas (he was an aggressive rebounder/defender who didn't need to score to greatly affect the game, need him to deal with the beasts)
C- Chris Owens

Walkon:
Chris McColpin

I can't believe I'm going to have to cut you:
G- Brandon Mouton (better overall player than AJ so far, but we need the shooter!)
G- Darren Kelly
F- Gabe Mouneke

I meant to put him on the

"can't believe I have to cut you list"

I mentioned him after Damion. He was a great all-around player.

I like it...

...but I would have the starting 5 look more like this:

PG- TJ Ford (no debate)
SG- Royal Ivey (valuable way beyond the box score)
SF- Kevin Durant (again no debate)
PF- PJ Tucker (could score, rebound, and defend even though undersized)
C- LaMarcus Aldridge (big man who could rebound and shoot)

This is a fun discussion to have cause there's not a right answer.

I'd stick with strictly Barnes's players

Werent Mihm and Mo Evans Penders recruits? and maybe even Chris Owens?  Damn, Barnes has been here awhile.

I think they said on TV Monday...

it has been about 10 years.  I think he came the same year or so MB did.

PS - Just looked it up and it has been 10 years.

Connor?!

I want Connor and/or Buckman on that list.  I can't imagine who I'd kick off though...

by pleaseplaykindle on Feb 26, 2008 11:48 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

Including Gibson

Gibson is a good talent, but frustrated the hell out of me when he was at Texas.  What did he do that would make you put him ahead of other guards available?

by whoopspat on Feb 26, 2008 11:51 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

gibson

Has been great in the pros, but the diary said in college, and i agree whoopspat, he was maddeningly frustrating at UT. Plenty of great moments, but looooong stretches of head scratching play.

Not sure I'd start Evans either.

He was a Penders guy too, so was Mihm, and Owens. Not sure Barnes would have recruited any of those guys. Maybe Owens.

Gibson

Was a natural 2.

Most of my frustration came from when we had to run him at point.

As a shooting guard he was excellent, as the primary point guard, he was frustrating.

by BoddickerIsClutch on Feb 27, 2008 8:05 AM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Connor, etc

I included the players Penders recruited on the list because I think Barnes played a big part in their development, especially with Mihm who I think would've played in Europe if not for Rick. Evans was a Barnes recruit from another college (forgot which one) and so was Owens (Tulane). It wouldn't suffer much otherwise.

Can't go wrong with Buckman, but I don't know what he brought to the table that these guys didn't.

Connor and Mase have yet to play their best basketball as they'll definitely be back next year.

The list is just for fun, I didn't put a formula in or anything, an argument can be made for all the players mentioned.

A little more

Gibson was a solid defender in my opinion and played a huge role on our elite 8 team, and his freshman year.

True with Evans that he wasn't the best player while at UT, but he did lead us in scoring during his only season. I put him at imaginary starter because he seemed to be a player in search of a good point guard when he played. If he'd stayed and played with TJ we might have a national championship under our belt.

can you have a Barnes team

without a tall white guy stepping out for the 3? :)

I'd go with Ford, Durant as off guard, Tucker, Aldridge as my main four.  Talk about matchup nightmares.

5th might be Boddicker (prolific high % 3's).  Even if he's not one of the top 13, definitely fills a role and would make the team nearly impossible to defend.  None of the other forwards can really play pick and pop unless you want Durant setting screens.  Connor getting there fast.

by tenuki on Feb 27, 2008 12:42 AM CST reply actions   0 recs

I like the Boddicker Love

But id probably say go with an AASAA scheme with:

Ford
Augustine
Durant
Tucker
Aldridge

With off the bench contributions from:
Ivey
Gibson
James
Buckman
Atchley

That starting five would be solid on D, and with an AASAA, I dont think anyone could keep up with them in scoring.

by BoddickerIsClutch on Feb 27, 2008 7:46 AM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Boddicker is needed

Boddicker needs to start just for the fact that every fan base hated him so much.

by JohnsonUT on Feb 27, 2008 9:34 AM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Thomas > Aldridge

In college anyway, I would have rather had Thomas on the first team.  Just when LA started showing us what he could do, he was gone.  His freshmen year didn't count as he was injured the whole time, so we only had him for one year.

Thomas, not nearly as good as LA, gave UT so much more over a 4 year career.

Is this about what they gave

or what the top team would be?

by Wells on Feb 28, 2008 7:40 AM CST up reply actions   0 recs

James Thomas

He could have been so much better if only he had a softer pair of hands.  Every basket he made seemed to come after he misses the first shot and got his own rebound.

by JohnsonUT on Feb 27, 2008 9:36 AM CST reply actions   0 recs

My Team

Starters:
TJ
Mouton
Durant
PJ
LA

Bench:
DJ
Gibson
Royal
James
Thomas

Biased, but I'm adding

Brandon Mouton ... don't ask me why. He's not as good as most of those players, but when he got hot behind the arc he was as good as Abrams

"Excuse me while I whip this out."

Texas Tech Game 2003

The 3 off of the inbounds with about 2 seconds left is why I love Mouton. He always seemed to come through when we needed him.

Vote for DJ

TJ Ford is one great player but I would pick DJ to run the point. DJ doesn't have the blinding speed or quickness but he is much more deliberate in the half court offense which leads to better shots. If you compare this teams offensive efficiency to Ford's I bet this years team was higher. That's DJ controlling the pace and taking the time to get the defense out of position. DJ is totally methodical about cutting up the defense. I can't think of another college PG as  exacting and in control as he dissects the defense.

I would pick Atchley over James Thomas. Thomas was a great rebounder but he had hands of stone and didn't add much on the offense. Atchley may get 2-3 less rebounds per game but he will gets more blocks to make up for those. Atchley is a much better passer and can even carry the offense for a small part of the game. He's also much more of a threat in the pick roll and High Screens.

Impressive

Just looking at all the players people are picking, it's ridiculous how long Barnes has been around, how many great players have come and gone and how many NCAA championships we've won...oh, wait, we haven't.  Just looking at the impressive list of players that Barnes has coached, isn't it the slightest bit frustrating that we haven't ever come as close as we did with TJ when we made it to the Final 4?  If only some of these guys would stick it out 1 more year or 2, we could really assemble some unstoppable teams, but for some reason, they like to jump to the NBA as soon as the opportunity presents itself.  But it is frustrating.
Question on Boddicker, who I happened to love when he was at UT, but why was he so hated by other fan bases?  I had no idea about this.

Honk if you're longhorny!

Another team

I like this team:

PG: T.J. Ford: he wasn't as pure a scorer as DJ but he was a better passer, unstoppable in crunch time and a better defender/rebounder. Imagine if he had played with Durant or AJ (here he will).
SG: Royal Ivey: This team will have all the necessary scoring to allow space for a fantastic defender who could run the point if necessary.
SF: Damion James: Outstanding rebounder and can guard post-players and tall perimeter players extremely well. Runs the court well and spaces out the floor.
PF: Kevin Durant: The best player to play at UT ever. We can put James on a post-player if necessary to protect Durant, it doesn't really matter.
C: LaMarcus Aldridge: Imagine Texas running some of the high screen plays we've run with Atchley/DJ only with Ford/Aldridge. LaMarcus could shoot 15 footers or run to the basket.

Bench:
*DJ Augustine: not really needed with TJ Ford but one of the best players to play at UT so I include him.
P.J. Tucker: Versatile and could spell either Durant or James.
Daniel Gibson: Rest for Ivey or TJ. Good shooter off the bench.
James Thomas: Best rebounder Texas has ever had.
Brandon Mouton: Another Shooter off the bench who could also do other things.

That's my nine deep and the best combination of players I think Texas could assemble in a way that would make sense. Texas could continue to spread the floor with this team and have lethal defense and a deadly transition game.

I like it

With Barnes as coach, though, we need at least one big white guy.

Jason Klotz?

If it is only Barnes recruited

then I go with Connor over Klotz, otherwise Mihm.

My favorite team

The one we would have had last year given a stay in school for 4 years rule.
Augustin
Gibson
Tucker
Durant
Aldridge

bench:
James
Mason
Atchley
Abrams

I wonder who they would have had to play (given the 4 year rule).

by Longhorn Person on Feb 28, 2008 10:26 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

Of course, there is this situation:

Atchley, James and Mason, to some great degree, all developed - and are developing - during this season.

If your bench guys hadn't been starting, the chances are high Atchley and James wouldn't have reached the competitive level they have so far and Mason wouldn't be the complete package he has become.

But seeing as how you're speculatin' we shouldn't let reality intrude too much.

by whills on Feb 28, 2008 10:43 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

While we are talking reality

there is no way we ever get that team with a 4 years rule.  Even if they all wanted to come sit the bench, we would not have the scholarships.
