Big 12 Bubble Watch. Chip Brown's got a nice summary of Big 12 teams on the bubble - Baylor, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, Texas A&M, and Texas Tech. The Cowboys picked a huge win in Columbia last night for their fourth straight victory. Oklahoma State's consecutive wins over Baylor, A&M, Kansas and now Missouri has them back from the dead and sitting at 6-7 in conference play. They'll need to win at least two of their next three (Nebraska, Oklahoma, Texas) to remain in the hunt.
Tonight's Big 12 schedule features Kansas at Iowa State (6 p.m., ESPN), Oklahoma at Nebraska (7 p.m.), Texas Tech at Texas A&M (7 p.m., ESPN Plus), and Baylor at Colorado (7:30 p.m., Fox Sports Net Rocky Mountain).
One and done. Tennessee's rise to the top of college basketball's rankings was fun, but staying on top's not easy, as the Vols learned last night in a 72-69 loss to Vanderbilt in Nashville. Tennessee still leads the SEC at 11-2, but they'll need to finish strong if they want a top seed in the NCAAs. The Vols close with Kentucky, at Florida, and South Carolina before the SEC Tournament in Atlanta.
Baseball to 4-0. The Longhorns won their fourth straight to start the season with a 10-3 win over UT-Pan American on Tuesday. Freshman Brandon Workman gave Texas 6 excellent innings, allowing just six hits while fanning 11. Texas put away UTPA in a five-run fifth inning in which they drew five walks and had two run-scoring singles.

If Tech really wanted to secure this one before they walked onto the floor, they would make Leach attend.

is right. The amount of hatred displayed towards Tech on the texags forum nearly rivals the amount of hatred for us. I love when these schools play each other.
But they don't limit their hatred to rivals,
they even throw their own children under the bus to create an aggy excuse:
If that chubby ball boy gets on the floor and wipes up after players fall Bryan Davis dunks and we are up 2, but no of course he just sits on his fat a$$. At least twice in the second half this happened. Sloan slipped on another situation. And remember last week's game, Kirk missed a freethrow and grabs his rebound, but what happened he slipped. Probably because of CHUBBY

I totally agree...
aTm/tech is becoming one of my favorite rivalries to watch. There ALWAYS seems to be some underlying soap opera story when they get together on the field or the court.

RPI Game
The Horns, with 4 losses, no longer have to play the RPI game of "we want KU, UCLA or Tenn to win so it helps our strength of schedule." Standing at only one game behind in the loss column, we want ALL of them to lose, several times if necessary, because now they stand in our way of grabbing a #1 seed. UT's SOS is high enough, regardless of what those three teams do now, to land a #1 seed if they take care of business down the stretch.
So no more "does that help our SOS" talk about teams above us or near us in the polls winning. "Dey is all in da way", let them crash and burn.

I don't want UCLA to pick up any more losses.
If UCLA wins out, then most likely UCLA would be picked as a #1 seed, and seeded for the Phoenix regional. This would better our chances to be in the Houston regional, so long as we don't totally tank down the stretch.
Regardless of whether UCLA ends up with a seeding higher that Texas, I'd like for the selection committee to already have UCLA locked into that spot, thereby making Texas not the most western-located highly ranked team.

Let UCLA be the shoe in for the west, UT should be the shoe in for the south, and let whatever Easterly teams duke out who has to go north.
Id rather Texas not be the team furthest west geographically to get a #1 seed.

help Texas move up a spot? or will Tennessee only drop to #3 or #4 leaving Texas at #5.
I would be tickled to death if Texas went into the tournament as the overall #1 seed. Without those couple of losses to Michigan State and Wisconsin at home, we probably would be #1 in the polls right now. I blame the Christmas holidays. The two conference losses are legitimate losses. Mizzou might of even been a contender in our conference had they not had one of their best players suspended indefinitely. Too bad he didn't get in trouble before they played us.
Perhaps the sneaky #5 they are describing Texas as is a good position to be in. If we can get through our first couple of games in the NCAA tournament without any goof-ups, I think a National Championship is surely in reach.
Christmas Holidays to blame.
It's Division I basketball! It's the Big 12! It ain't intramurals! You've got two weeks after finals. You've got a week at July 4th. You've got a week before camp starts. That's probably more vacation than you guys get.
And we're a little bummed out that we don't get three weeks! Go play intramurals, brotha. Go play intramurals.

Bill Self to OSU?
I heard about this rumor even before I read it again in Chip's article and I know he has ties to the Cowboys, but seriously, does anybody really think Self would leave Kansas for OSU?
If Kansas was playing poorly and there was talk that Self would be fired at season's end, then maybe I could see it. But to voluntarily leave? That makes no sense. I don't care if he did play for the Cowboys.
Anybody got any more scoop on this rumor? Did T-Boone offer to buy him half of Grand Lake if he came back to Stillwater?

said that Mike Holder (AD) is still silent on the issue, which has raised speculation to high levels. TBP has been dissatisfied with Sean Sutton for some time now, but he may have bought himself a little time with his current (4-game) winning streak. If they get to the tourney and win a couple, sweatball could be spared.
I can't see Self making that switch, personally, but what do I know. (answer = not much)

Sutton is on the hot seat and not just because he always looks like he's punching out a turd in a West Texas outhouse on an August afternoon...
But I think it's pretty presumptuous on the Pokes' part to think that just becuase they may have a coaching vacancy, Self is automatically a candidate.
Reminds me of when some Aggies thought Tuberville was an option to replace Fran.

I've been...
hearing that rumor for two years now. If Pickens would have had his druthers, he would have blocked Sean Sutton's promotion to head coach and offered Bill Self the finest meats, cheeses and strippers Stillwater has to offer (OK, maybe he could find something better than Stillwater strippers).
That said, the KU job is clearly a "better" (i.e., more elite) job than Okie State, but don't forget OSU loves its basketball something fierce. Not to mention, fan expectations are through the roof at KU, and unless Self can deliver a Final Four this year, he's going to have fans breathing down his neck. And finally, think about what KU is likely to lose after this year: Brandon Rush, Russell Robinson, Mario Chalmers, Darnell Jackson, Sasha Kaun and quite possibly Darrell Arthur. That's a lot to replace with a fan base that's getting impatient for what it considers "real" results.

but the freshman pitchers are putting up some pretty sick numbers. Let's hope they can keep it up through this years busier schedule.
As far as the bubble goes in Big 12 Basketball...
There are 4 teams now battling for the last spot (under the impression we should land 6 teams from the Big 12 in the tournament).
They are Nebraska, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, and Texas Tech. THREE of these teams are our 3 final games. Although these teams are toward the bottom of the conference, they are desperate for wins, especially impressive wins against big name teams like Texas.
I certainly think Texas should beat these teams; however, we should remember that these teams will be playing with nothing to lose and everything to gain. Understanding your opponents' mindsets going into a game is an important aspect to strategy and expectations. I hope that Barnes communicates this to the players.
