Is Dick Vitale smoking crack?

Check out ESPN's "expert" rankings for this week:
http://sports.espn.go.com/ncb/powerr...

Star-divide

I'm not of the opinion that Texas is the #1 team in the country...but we're also a far cry from ELEVEN.  Somehow Vitale has ranked Stanford, KU, Xavier, Indiana, & Georgetown ahead of us.  I can understand a ranking in the 3 - 6 range, but 11? come on.  What could this possibly be based on?  No one else had us lower than 5.

#1 + #1 = #11?

Maybe Dick was so impressed with Texas, Dick thought we deserve two #1 spot.

#1 + #1 = #11?

Dick is a dick

Just another case of ESPN (their employees) having way too much influence on sports.

I refuse to watch games when he does color commentary. I truly do not understand what anybody sees in him. His cliche's are old and boring and he always finds a way to work in props for the ACC regardless of who is playing.

Quirky math

I also don't understand how Texas can have 152 points to UCLA's 149, but they're ranked fourth and we're fifth.  Vitale must have a grudge against somebody.  Even Bilas and Glockner, not our biggest fans this season, have us fifth.  And we scored two first-place votes.

IF

they do it the same, points wise, as the other polls, where a team in the number one spot gets 16 points and a team in the 16th spot gets 1 point(which I'm sure they did), then Texas only has 140 points not 152 and would therefore be behind UCLA.  Thanks DICK-V.  What a douche, apparently because Texas isnt in the ACC, their wins over Tenn, at UCLA, Kansas dont mean anything.  In his eyes, we never really played those games, and Stanfords tough PAC10 schedule puts them above us...  The man should retire and never be allowed to cast a vote again...

My adopted son, Lamarr Houston, once beat up Chuck Norris. Now thats a bad ass!

And

a Xavier team that lost to 15-12 Temple by 19 points is two spots better...really?

hmm

If he'd voted us 5th, we'd be third (tied with Tenn but with 2 first place votes).

Dicky V

You may think his schtick is stale and he hangs from Coach K's left nut (both true), but Dickie V has been the loudest promoter of CBB for as long as I can remember watching.  His passion for the game is unquestionable and I think the broadcasting world would be a little less fun without his presence.  His peers and stewards of the game agree as well, landing him in the basketball HOF recently.
Before the BONers light the torches and get a rope for a hyperspace lynching, realize the guy is recovering from throat cancer and is probably not 100%.  Is that an excuse to slack on his job of analyzing all things college basketball?  Probably not.  But maybe his priorities are a little different at the moment.  And since when does the weekly ESPN.com Power Rankings mean a damn thing??  The only thing that matters is steamrolling Tech on Saturday.  The rest will work itself out.  Let's avoid acting like Aggies and turds and stay the classy fan base the country knows us as.

Good answer

By getting upset at this we actually would be giving this meaningless poll more importance than it actually has.

Agreed

The Power 16 means absolutely nothing. We really shouldn't be upset about this.

I doubt he is smoking crack.

The man just overcame a battle with cancer. We should all be understanding of his situation. Understanding that medical doctors proscribe the BEST drugs, Dick is probably on seven of them.

Alzheimer's

This was just posted by Dick on ESPN?

http://espn.go.com/dickvitale/080129roundballchatter.html

• How about some consideration for Rick Barnes of Texas as national Coach of the Year? Think about his Longhorns after losing the Player of the Year from a season ago, Kevin Durant. Well, Barnes regrouped his team and Texas is in the hunt for a No. 1 seed at the big dance. The Longhorns have wins over Tennessee, UCLA and Kansas. His name should be mentioned among those doing the best coaching job this season!

Now that

Just makes his ranking us #11 all the more...stultifying? Certainly gives some credence to bill's SEVEN drugs argument.

Does any of this matter?

I know very little about how the seeds in CBB are determined, but please tell me that Dick Vitale and ESPN have nothing to do with it.  Pleae?

It's up to the selection committee

To my understanding the selection committee doesn't include any ESPN analysts, they're all NCAA representatives in some form or another.

Lucky for us, a recovering Dick Vitale will have nothing to do with the final decision.

Back in the SWC days during the early 80s

Lamar under Billy Tubbs had the best team in Texas year end and year out.  Thats not saying alot, but I remember the year they made the Sweet 16, Vitale had some quote that that was just a rude put-down.  Can't remember the quote but it made the paper in Beaumont.  The whole town was let down.  Hated the clown ever since.

Picking a nit here, but...

UTEP was easily the best college hoops team in Texas during the early eighties.

The Billy Tubbs Teams

were from 1976 to 1980,1980 was the year they made the sweet sixteen BB Davis and Mike Oliver on that team.  80 to 86 was Pat Foster he had a really good team in 83, won in the first round and lost in the second round to villanova by one or two points. Tommy sewell was on that team i think he was drafted #5 in the 84 draft.

A new addition to the meaning of Hell.

Dick Vitale calling a series of Duke games for eternity and being forced to listen to every inane word.

by Xerxes on Feb 29, 2008 11:23 PM CST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I still like Dickey V

He is a Duke lover, and I despise his Duke-love even more for the fact that they've kicked our ass every time we've played them. I definitely have problems with what he (along with any other commentator) says.

However, the universal popularity of college basketball among fans and non-fans alike is in part because of his enthusiasm toward the game. Think about it, if you were watching something you didn't care about (for me, let's say women's golf) would you rather have a calm commentator talk about the mechanics of the swing or Dickie V shouting "it's in the green, baby!"?

No one should doubt his knowledge of basketball either: a poor NBA coach is to an well-informed fan analyzing basketball as JD Lewis is to Lebron James playing a game of one-on-one.

ESPN hates Texas

It's that simple, really.  And Dick Vitale is no different.  The proof is in the pudding: after that killer win against Kansas last week, the headline on ESPN.com was about Beasley scoring 30 in the loss, not about Texas winning.  And you can bet your ass I wrote ESPN a strongly worded email about their anti-Texas bias showing.  And it's not just in basketball, football too.  After we beat USC in 2006, the broadcasters went directly to the USC sidelines!  Traditionally, you go to the winners' sideline to congratulate them, but for some reason, they didn't.  Bias.

Honk if you're longhorny!
