I'm not sure if anyone read this article...
Now don't get me wrong, I expect vulgarity at a game and even partake in some of it. But chanting "faggot" and throwing things at a player's grandmother and calling her a whore is more than just below the belt. Being the obnoxious drunk frat guy is one thing, this is something else entirely.
I'm not going to advocate a solution by clamping down on fan behavior and the potential 1st amendment right violations, I'm just saying this is in very, very bad taste.

thanks for posting
It's amazing what goes on at other schools. I don't live in Austin so I can't get to the Drum regularly, but I'd be amazed if Texas fans ever got nearly so bad. An LA friend and USC fan has told me the Oregon fans are the worst in the Pac10. I think you can dismiss the Duke-Maryland stunt as pretentious BS from a one-sport school. But threats and obscenities should be cause for ejection.

I was at the UAB-Memphis game mentioned...
While it was a little crazy - the Memphis players brought some of that on themselves (as Calipari mentioned in his post-game comments). No excuse though - fans should NOT have been on the floor.
Full disclosure - I'm a UAB grad so have a bias against Memphis.

The line was crossed long ago
I thought the worst one was when the Arizona Fans chanted "PLO, PLO" to Steve Kerr, then an ASU player, when they knew his father had been killed while serving as the President of the American University in Beirut. Yeah, that's classy.
When the US was playing Mexico in a World Cup qualifier three years ago in the El Azteka (which is apprently 10x worse than playing in "The Shoe"), the Mexican fans chanted "Al Quaeda" at our team. Again, classy.
But from what I've heard, all that still doesn't hold a candle to what European Soccer fans do to each other...talk about a bunch of heartless bastards. And I always love how my English friends say that UT fans are no where near as fanatical as Premier League soccer fans...as if I should feel ashamed for that. I'm like, "Dude, a Sooner fan tried to rip the ball sack off a UT fan just for comign into his bar." Their response, "A Man U fan would have actually ripped it off."
And there's a wild story circulating about Tommy Hicks, son of Tom Hicks (Rangers and Stars owner who recently bought Liverpool's soccer team). Apparently Tommy was over there and went to a bar after a match...a bar where a lot of Liverpool fans hang out and apparently they're really pissed at the Hicks family for how they run the team.
Anyway, Tommy had to be ushered out of the bar by security because the fans were spitting and throwing drinks on him.
Think about that for a second...that's tantamount to you and I running into Deloss Dodds at a bar in Austin and spitting on him. Unreal.

Soccer fans are insane
And I don't mean that in the best way. It's gotten really bad in Spain especially, where racism and anti-semitism almost seem the norm for crowd behavior. It's really sad that opposing fans have to resort to such lows to try to get in a player's head.

No surprise
Until people get back to realizing that there is a standard of conduct that needs to be observed in public this will only get worse. Making fun of a school (which is not personalized) has now been replaced by making fun of a person in the most vulgar fashion.
Unfortunately civility is now at an all time low and heading lower and it's product of how those specific generations of fans were raised. Vulgarity is too easily tolerated, and "some of it" eventually leads to "more of it". That is just inevitable.
I find the behaviors in the article disgusting, and think there DOES need to be a crackdown. If their mommas and daddies didn't teach'em how to act and police themselves, then society needs to adopt rules to do so. Acting this way should stigmatize someone... then it will stop.

I think it comes down to
speaking out. I think too many people just sit and ignore things hoping it will go away. If you are vocal in a civil way an let people know that type of behavior is wrong then people tend to stop.

SI
I read that article when it was posted on fark (yesterday, I think). I then looked at the SI Photos section and noticed some of the fans the article is talking about are in the College Super Fans album. I just thought it was a bit amusing.

1st Ammendment Rights?
Out on the public streets is one thing, but these fans are in a private arena and have no constitutional argument that they can say or do what ever they want.
It is not only with in the right of the arena to control fans behavior, it is important they do so they do not lose customers and they are legally obligated to do so when not doing it endangers the health of others.

Disgusting visting fans
So you know how when a player's down on the field we all put our horns up, no matter what team they're on? I was at a home football game once vs. Tech and these idiot Raiders thought it'd be cool to sit in the student section (unfortunately they were friends with some of our own) and then pick on our team the whole time. This was fine until one of our players was down and they started cheering and yelling as loud as they could. At this point, I told them they were being class-less and to just shut up and they told my friends to "keep their dog on a leash." I just glared at them before they ran off, never to be seen in that section again. And I'm a petite woman and these were 2 dudes. Pathetic and classless.
