Desean Hales
I really excited to see him play, he looks like he has jamaal speed and game breaking ability. I think he will be really fun to watch but where do you out him?

I agree

I am equally excited to see Hales on the field.  4.4 speed and shifty from the vids I've seen, IMO fits the mold of the spread run game we've had the last few years...

My adopted son, Lamarr Houston, once beat up Chuck Norris. Now thats a bad ass!

i'm sure many of the educated will blame greg davis.
mack brown should not spend 1 more minute recruiting out-of-state players. we don't need them to win the NC ever. and they usually play with us then go somewhere else. colorado?? give me a MF break. can't wait to stomp them again 70-3.

i still can't believe we won!!

rod davis

do we really think he'll come to texas?? in his scout.com profile..he's wearing an A&M shirt...what's that about??

about the rb's..i think we should start w/ fozzy and vondrell and leaving Ogbonnaya in for blocking and catching ball out of backfield.  is deshean hales not enrolled early? if so, i think you should start him off on kickoff return and move him into the rotation. oh yeah, cody johnson should stick to fb and give the ball a couple of times.

I REALLY liked what I saw this year

from Vondrell McGee and Chris Ogbonnaya.  I would say they have my vote going into next year, BUT there are 205 days until we play Florida Atlantic and a lot can change.  I can't wait to see these guys fight for their spot at this spring's Orange and White game.

College was fun!

Re:

I'm assuming Vondrell and Oggie get the first crack in the backfield. Let's not forget that Vondrell was a top 100 recruit as well, back in his day.

I don't see any need to go outside Texas for the loaded '09 class, but let's not forget that Lamarr Houston and Blaine Irby were OOS, and both of them look VERY promising.

Personally, I'm most excited about the Justin Tucker era.

Fozzy,Buckner,Hales
1) Vondrell Mcgee will start and Fozzy will rotate in with him. Cody Johnson will be our power guy. I think Tre Newton and Hills will RS.

2) I hoe Rod Davis makes the right choice, because we need some DT's.

3)I can't wait to see Dan Buckner. I think he will be special...Hales will be great if he is used properly.

4) He definitly should back off national players. The best players in the country are right here in TEXAS.

Looking ahead...

I'll comment in order:

  1.  I'm sure McGee will be given the chance to win the job and probably will be the feature back, but this could be very much like '05 when we Selvin, Melton, and Charles.
  1.  A Rod Davis committ would be shocking to me.
  1.  I think I'm most excited about Buckner and Grant.  With Sweed, Jones, and Pittman gone the frosh receivers have a great chance to play early.  Buckner and Grant have the size to be the big receiver we usually have.
  1.  I don't know if he will, but I don't think Mack should back off completely.  However, if he does find an OOS guy he likes I think he should target him early and go after OOS guys like he does Texas guys.  Get after 'em early.

With that said let the countdown to Signing Day '09 begin.  Junior Days this weekend.  With Scott passing on us, getting a commitment from Whaley, Michael, and/or Pratt just became that much more important.  The fun never stops.  I love it.

Re: Mack and national players

It all depends on the situation.  Texas got into the Scott sweepstakes very late in the process.  That's both good and bad.  It makes it harder to close the deal (the kids always give preference to the schools who showed the most interest the earliest) but it also means that they didn't put too much effort into his recruiting and they didn't lose out on any other prospects in the process.

On the other hand, if there's a kid they get involved with early in the process, I think they need to be as sure as possible that they can land him and he'll stay solid.

Going after Scott was a no-lose situation.  Too bad it didn't work out.

by gwh65 on Feb 6, 2008 1:01 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

Mack shouldn't back off.
  1.  McGee will start, but I think we should give Cody Johnson and Jeremy Hills some looks early in the season.  I've heard good things about Hills' explosivness. But I will enjoy watching McGee's running style next season, he will be a star.
  1.  Davis would be just as important a pickup as Scott would have been.  We are very thin at DT and Davis will get a hard look during spring practice if he signs with us.  Would be a great pickup!
  1.  Most excited to see Aaron williams, DeSEan Hales, and Dan Buckner.  All 3 are expected to compete for early playing time.  I can see Hales getting PT early on with special teams and as a slot man.  Williams should see time as a nickel-back.  And Buckner will compete for significant time as well
  1.  I do not think he should completely back off of OOS recruits.  But I do believe he should be wary of players that have family connections that will hinder our recruitment.  Make the player show interest, Marlon Brown and Cierre Wood of the 09 class for example.  Those guys have both come out and said that they want Texas to be involved.
My adopted son Sergio Kindle does not sleep; he waits.

Don't restrict yourself
It may be true that there are enough premium players in the state of Texas to win the MNC, but that assumes you can get most of them.  That seldom happens when you are competing against in-state schools, as well as seeing teams like LSU, OU, OSU, USC, ND, etc, cherry-pick Texas.  Brown should stop  recruiting OOS only if he and UT just can't attract OOS talent, and that is obviously nonsense.  As mvplonghorns points out, just be selective.  Recruit early and hard those you have a chance with.  Many players stay close to home but others want a different climate or to be as far away from home as possible.  Many players go out of state.

After the National Title, wasn't Texas supposed

to get a recruiting boom?  I know Mack's classes since, including this one, are very good, but why can't he seem to get the elite national prospect he chases every year?

First Perriloux, then Brantley (who will probably never play at Florida), and now Scott.  Mack just needs to keep it in state.

by the1austin on Feb 6, 2008 1:16 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

and they all suck
  1. Perriloux just gives me a real reason to dislike LSU AND he's been doing pretty poorly over there, playing second fiddle and whatnot.  And can you really expect someone who's last name ends "oux" to leave the state of Louisiana?  No, of course not!  So  no big loss there.
  1. Brantley, as you said, will never play at Florida as he's #4 on the depth chart and Tebow was HUGE for them this year and only a year ahead, and Brantley has some same-year competition in #2 string Newton.
  1. Darrell Scott is a drama queen for stringing Texas along until the last minute, so why do we need someone like that around?  There are plenty of talented people who WANT to play for Texas, so there's no need to cry over those that choose to play for some subpar team.  Additionally, if his collegiate career turns into anything like Perriloux and Brantley, we'll all be counting our blessings he decided to go Buff instead of Long. (clever, eh?)

Overall, don't cry over spilt milk cuz chances are, it ain't worth it anyhow.  And all our stars in the NC were, I believe, home grown Texas boys, so who needs those OOS snobs anyhow?

Re:

Perrilloux hurt because he'd been stringing along Texas for months after giving his "soft" verbal. He kept talking about bringing recruits to Texas. Of course, those guys happened Fred Rouse and Martellus Bennett, and neither looks to be a great loss for Texas. From an objective (and strictly on-field) standpoint, Perrilloux would've without question stepped in for Vince after graduation, and based purely on opinion, I imagine we'd have picked up one (or two) of those Big XII championships. He's also got two more years at the reins of an explosive Tiger offense. I still hate him, though.

Don't be so sure about Brantley; Perrilloux once thought he wouldn't get PT behind VY. There's always a chance Tebow gets injured or decides to leave early (if this is the case, Brantley has a chance to take over as a RS sophomore).

I don't blame Scott for taking until signing day to make a decision. Before Charles left, Texas was barely in the picture. After Charles leaves, Scott's got a little over a month left before signing day; you're going to begrudge a guy for taking his time to make a decision that affects the next 3-5 years of his life?

I dont understand why players like Darrell Scott hype up Texas and tout them as the easy frontrunner and shun them at the last minute by choosing other powerhouses (Perriloux at LSU) or clearly inferior teams (Colorado, the A&M Fiasco with Bennett).  Maybe because I am a Texas fan and have tunnel vision when it comes to recruiting, is stuff like this happening to other big schools, or is this recent trend being leveled directly at our squad?  Are some top-flight recruits becoming "Anti-Texas" and doing what they can to disappoint the coaching staff and fanbase by leading on potential schools like a loopy bachelorette?

Wild Guess

I read in the comments of another diary that apparently Scott's mama told the orangebloods reporters that they were not even allowed to cover the story. That seems almost spiteful to me. I'm not meaning to call anyone out, but is it possible that every time Mack focuses on a very highly ranked prospect, OB's reporters harass the poor kid and his (or her for pc's sake) family (ie minute by minute updates) to the point that they are turned off by the notion of coming to Texas?

Don't get me wrong, I love reading/watching just about anything that comes off of the website, but still something to think about.

Aaron Williams and Dan Buckner

Both of them dominated during the Army AA practices.  AW especially.  He was one of the fastest safeties, had the best ball skills, and was in the top 3 in a bunch of other categories.  Maybe Mack can resist trying him at RB, LB, and WR.  If he's a fast learner he could see a lot of time at FS or SS.

$.02

1.Vondrell by default to get the lion's share of the carries. His experience (relative to everyone else), power, and ability to hit top speed very quickly make him my pick. I will be interested to see what the Redshirted guys and the true freshmen can do if given the opportunity. I like what Ogbonnaya brings as a receiver. Basically, I'm expecting RB by committee.

3.I'll cheat and say Dan Buckner and DJ Grant. As my screen name indicates, I have a soft spot for big receivers, and I'm really looking forward to see how these two pan out.

3a.DeSean Hales seems to have homerun hitting capability, so I'm excited to watch him, too.

4.Mack has been burned twice in a few years now on big time out of state recruits, but I don't feel that should discourage him from pursuing them. Texas' tradition, facilities, coaches, blah blah blah always give them a chance to land one of these big-time out of state guys. Mack's bound to get one sooner or later if he keeps at it. Even when they don't choose Texas, Mack has still put together solid classes. I think the possible reward outweighs the risk.

My Centibles
  1.  Fozzy Fozzy Fozzy.  I want him to be successful so bad it hurts.  Honestly though, I just hope the best talent sees the most playing time.  Normally this would be a given, but who knows with this coaching staff.  Im not too worried, at the very least, I know Vondrell and Chris are capable of getting the job done.
  1.  Its hard for me to imagine why a top recruit would be deciding between Texas or aTm.  It seems to me you would rather be an aTm guy or not, and if not, UT brings a lot more success to the table.  Except against aTm as of recent...
  1.  Buckner is my top favorite to see, other then that its a tie with every defensive back on the list.  I love good secondaries, and am jazzed hoping that we can get back to that.
  1.  I think Mack doesnt get involved with kids who have family ties to other schools that are out of state as well, except Brewster.  So whatever, Mack will go for who he thinks gives us the best chance to win.  In or out of Texas.

IN-STATE ONLY RECRUITING POLICY

I think we should definately start recruiting only in-state players.  KEY: We make it widely known throughout the country that we do so.  Texas Bred Players Only.  This would most likely result in more Texas recruits going to UT.  Also, its not like we recruit that many out-of-state players anyway.

If we show loyalty to Texas prospects maybe they will reciprocate.  Not to mention, as far as conference significance, keeping Texas prospects from going to OU would result in a lot more Big 12 Championships and in turn more BCS bowl games.

Why Limit Yourself?

I agree with previous posters that we shouldn't close the borders but should selectively recruit hard early as we do with in-staters.  While I love the big balls call of of Texas-borns only, there will be times when we should go OOS if it's reciprocated by the player.

I think it's naive to think that anything we do will stop talent from leaking across state lines to LSU and OU...there's just so much here it's too hard to keep.

  1. i am ok with not landing scott, but not too particular about running back by committee. i wouldnt mind fozzy getting the majority of the carries but i know that politics has chris O B wan kanobe having the bulk of the load on him and sprinkles of the other guys.
  1. rod davis should come to texas if he wants to play at the next level. i consider texas one of the best schools for the d-line. texas d-line is represented well in the nfl. crowder, robison, hampton and i can go on for a half dozen more.
  1. monroe stood out the most to me as i watched him in the army all american game here is san antonio. i think with akina just sticking to the defensive backs that he will have a shot to come in and contribute early
  1. we were a little late to the scott party and the only reason we were in the hunt late was because j. charles took off the nfl. i dont think we give up completely but we shouldnt make out of state kids priority #1, unless he is the next savior of our team.

Ah.....

"I like the area," he said. "I like the atmosphere, the fans, everything. The coaching staff."

But both mother and son also had concerns about the Texas coaching staff. On Jan. 9, running backs coach Ken Rucker became the Longhorns’ director of high school relations and player development. He had 21 years of experience as a running backs coach in college.

Three weeks before signing day, Major Applewhite, a former Longhorns quarterback, was hired as the team’s new assistant head coach and running backs coach. He had been Alabama’s offensive coordinator.

Although he was recruited by Texas wide receivers coach Bobby Kennedy, Scott told his mother that the Longhorns’ change of running backs coaches worried him.

"I’m unsure with that," he said. "That’s big."

.
I'd say it was the wrong time to hire a non-RB coach as our RB's Coach.....

Let me rephrase the question from what is Texas' best strategy for replacing Jamaal to how can UT best improve their offense?

  • Fewer interceptions and fumbles by Colt
  • more snaps for Chiles, especially on running downs
  • sharpen up the short passing game by putting TB and TE (or big WRs) types out wide.  The TE type can block for the explosive TB type so that two man screens actually work.  the idea is to put a couple more explosive athletes on the field that can get YAC and also put more effective blockers on the field.
  • Major should help GD figure out more effective game plans

Hope they give the news about Rod during the OU game tonight.  He seems like a smart kid but how anybody smart has trouble deciding between UT and A&M (especially when he can play right away at UT) is beyond me.

I'm most excited to see DJ Grant and Dan Buckman.  UT needs some tall, fast wideouts that can move shipley to the bench.

For redshirt freshman, I am most excited to see Cody Johnson (5'10", 240, 4.4).  I hope the guy can run, block, and receive.  UT hasn't had a good power running back since Cedric.  I hope that cody is deployed out wide as a receiver some and also at FB.

I see no reason for Mack to back off signing 5 star recruits or recruits where there is desperate need that he can't satisfy with a high school kid from Texas.  If the kid is considering coming to Texas, he needs to make his decision in a reasonable timeframe.  95% of the recruits should be from Texas.  I also think that Mack should look to the JCs every now and then.

I'm not reading of USC fans calling for Pete Carroll to withdraw to the borders of the state of California. Even though the left coast clearly has as much talent as we have here in Texas. I'm not reading of their fans being concerned of their HC having a fear of rejection from OOS recruits. Good gosh, we need to place the best players possible in the UT burntorange and white. a case for TEXAS ONLY recruiting

after reading all the comments I agree we should adopt a TEXAS ONLY recruiting policy (unless some stud comes to US and wants to sign) and let everyone in the nation know it. I think this would build incredible new instate loyalty and prevent at least some ***** recruits going north to the hated sooners. "We're Texas" with Walter Cronkite should apply to the football team too. there are 10 texas players on the 2009 rivals top 100 now. we are listed on everyone's list except 1. let him go. he doesn't want to be here. BUT go hard on every other one now and let them know they have a spot at Texas
NOW (assuming we want them). there are many ways to go but I think this is
1 way that will be strong, efficient, and intimidating. Sorry, Ricky Williams did not help us win a NC and call me selfish but that is all I care about. Vince Young did, an intercity Houston stud.
i will trade a truck load of Heismans for NCs anyday since the Heisman is no longer anything but politics. Just 1 guys opinion!!
