Keeping It Real

I am not ashamed to admit that I am really disappointed with the decision by Darrell Scott and I think it is a big deal.  To me - he is an Adrian Peterson type of talent that we simply do not have on the roster.  I can already hear the comments on how the recruiting game is only part of the situation and they are 18 year olds - blah blah blah.  Check the records on the top 5 star RBs and Ath QBs over the last 10 years - you will be shocked by their impact.  Add the  the pedestrian nature of the running backs and I have the concerns below:

Star-divide

First - let us recognize that with a home run hitter like Jamal it took GD GD three quarters of the season to figure out how to utilize his talents.  And if you want to be cruel - you can go back to last year if you want.

Secondly - Vondrell and Obey are not great backs.  They are fine if you want a few yards - but we are delusional if you think that they will keep Bob Stoops awake at night.

So here we are, running back by committee I guess.  Pooling the talents of shifty midgets with steady if unspectacular running backs.  Back to pass first offense and all the spoils that delivered?

I love Coach February, but this year we got our azzes handed to us by Oklahoma in the recruiting war.  Doesn't happen often, but this year it did.  Thankfully, the coaching changes should erase the edge Oklahoma had in player development.

i think fozzy is gonna be a great back

this year
and darrell scott while really good is no adrian peterson
a.p. was easily and still is one of the angriest runners around
just a mean beast
you don't see too many of those
we have good backs
and a good crop of receivers coming in
the sky is not falling

I'm not sure

how you can determine just how great Vondrell McGee is by evaluating nothing but his back up duty behind Jamaal this past season.  I think we owe it a little time, personally.

I thought he looked damn good this year and he certainly held his own in the Tech game when Jamaal was hurt and we needed to burn minutes off of the clock.

We're gonna be just find without Darrell Scott.  There's plenty to be excited about on our roster.

OU & Agros

Both getting better classes according to Scouts.com.

http://recruiting.scout.com/

Granted, every website has a different evaluation method but the fact that the Agros can pull a higher rated class in a year they lost their head coach is disheartening.  Doesn't seem like the usual top 10 from Mack (we're probably pretty spoiled at this point).  But that said, there's plenty of talent in the class and I'm excited to see the new staff coach 'em up.

After a Closer Look

The quality of Mack's class is better than the Agros. Sorry for the rage call on my part.

O-line

Why do we focus so much on the running backs? Yes, it would be nice to have a back with great speed and vision and all that good stuff, but it's really up to our offensive line. I think as long as the run blocking is good, our running game shouldn't see too much of a set back, if at all.

LSU

Just won a national title with Jacob Freaking Hester as the featured tailback.

Peterson never won one, by the way.

I know what you're getting at realmccoy, but I think you're overreacting. There are plenty of concerns for this team heading into 2008, but Darrell Scott was not - in my opinion - make or break.

Neither did McFadden...

O-line is more critical to a successful offense than anything else imo.  And personally Im really excited to have an older, more cohesive, hopefully healthier O-line this year, that has spent more time with Mad Dog.

Anyone can average good yardage if the holes are there, and I dont think Vondrell, DeSean, and Fozzy are just anyone either...

what?!?

A.P. didn't win a national title? I thought that's why he went to OU in the first place--to win championships...

On a more serious note, I completely agree. There was a lot of hype surrounding D.S., but we are solid at running back without him...maybe not heisman- or doak walker- solid, but solid nonetheless.

Disagree about Vondrell..

McGee will have every chance to prove he can carry the load for us.  And I think he will.

The kid is cut from the same mold as Mike Hart.  He will wear down defenses with his tough, gritty, grind-it-out style of running.

I can't wait to see what he does next season.

My adopted son Sergio Kindle does not sleep; he waits.

Time will tell about D-Scott...

But what did Adrian Peterson ever really do for OU...I guess he had a good Freshman year, but the team was loaded and having him sure didn't help them against USC.

He was injured for most of his second season (which was going very swimmingly when he was healthy).

And he got hurt again his final season at OU only to come back and lose to Boise State.

No doubt Adrian was and is an incredible talent, but what did he really do. I'd argue that the Patrick RB for OU has had more postive carreer for the Sooners.

Be nobody but yourself in a world that desperately wants you to be like everybody else.

I agree with you on this.

OU couldn't balance out the offense that well; it tended to become AP or nada many, many times. And when he went down, they had to scramble, but actually played OK without him.

{You know, the Horns got that way with Metcalf; when he went down for a while, two basic backs, Cockeral and James (sp; whatever their names0, started ripping 7-10 yard runs. Defenses can set up for one back all too easily.}

Having a superstar RB isn't always the the asset it's made out to be. And ole Boom Motherfuck*r has some cures for that, too.

DeSean Hales

I wouldn't lose too much sleep over DS. We've got a sick talent in DeSean. Kid is from my hometown, and I caught some of his games. I know he's projected at WR, but he reminded me of Charles when he'd rip long runs.

Re:

But what happens when "keeping it real" goes wrong?

My adopted kid is pure genius at the Black-Scholes Option Pricing Model.

Lets Keep it real in 2002

The year that Vincent Paul Young signed at Texas.
Other 5 Star Running Backs and Ath QBs that year:

Lorenzo Booker - Helped Florida win some ACC championships, but was not a world beater.  End up a 3rd round pick in the NFL.

Reggie McNeal - We all know what happened to him.

Marcus Vick - Your right, he did have a huge negative impact on Va Tech.

Ciatrick Fason - Who?

Gerald Riggs Jr. - Who?

Michael Johnson - Who?

Jerious Norwood - Had a good career at Mississippi St, drafted in the third round.

James Banks - Who?

Maurice Clarett - Did he have a positive impact?  His freshman year yes, but then I would say it got pretty negative.

Your right, shocking impact these guys had.

by Wells on Feb 7, 2008 10:01 AM CST   0 recs

Agreed...

With all of your assessments.  I do remember that Fason was a pretty good player in his career at Florida; he made some ESPN highlights at times and contributed well, but no major impact.  And Clarett, well what can you say.  That was just unbelievable.

185

Hales: 5'11, 185. I expect he'll put on some weight if he's a running back, but I think Charles was similarly light when he showed up on the 40 acres.
