Garrett Gilbert to Announce College Choice Tomorrow
Wow.
The 2008 ink is barely dry and now comes word that Garrett Gilbert, Rival's #2 rated quarterback and #12 player overall for 2009, will announce where he's going to school tomorrow. Geoff Ketchum just announced this on 590 KLBJ during Jeff Ward's show and he said Gilbert will most likely announce he's going to Texas.
Gilbert is the quarterback for state champion Lake Travis. He threw for nearly 5,000 yards this past season.

Interesting quote from Mack's presser...
"The other thing that we have to reevaluate is that we have not offered scholarships before signing day, most people are now, again we are the dinosaur. That hurts us some, because people think we're being arrogant or we don't want them, but what we like to do is give the due to the senior class, that’s what today is about, them and not the juniors. Tomorrow that's fine."

he ran a lot of shotgun..
for his high school offense. think of him as a Brian Brohm type of player with more mobility.
He will fit right in to a spread-passing attack. Which is something Greg/Major can do.

is he
more or less mobile than Colt?

Think of him...

Conspiracy theory?
You think Gilbert is trying to scare Shepard off with the early commit? Do recruits think like this? If I was a pocket passer that wanted to go to Texas, I sure as hell know I would think that way if someone like Shep was going to compete against my slow ass if he came to Texas with me. But then I'm not allowed to pass the ball forward (free kick to the opposing team if intentional. Ouch!).

I'm wondering
the same thing. This will definitely hurt our chances with Shep, but hopefully he's open to switching positions...

Gilbert and Shephard...
There's roughly 365 days until the next signing day; I assume things will work itself out by then.
IF Gilbert commits to UT, we might be seeing a Jevan Snead-Tim Tebow situation play out in the coming months...

Jevan Snead-Tim Tebow situation?
did snead want to go to florida but picked texas because teboy was going there?
by blazzinken on Feb 6, 2008 11:58 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
Ya
apparently at one point Meyer told Snead that he was recruiting Tebow as a LB...
by mmorales11 on Feb 7, 2008 12:15 AM CST up reply actions 0 recs
wow
teboy would probably be a really good LB but thats just crazy

Will he fit
You should never turn away talent but would he really fit the scheme? I really like Colt and the other QBs' mobility, and I'd hate to get away from that. In general I'd rather run the ball anyway, and if Texas gets a guy like this, the team might get too pass oriented. That being said, I haven't really seen much of Gilbert. Maybe he can scramble...

Gilbert
I mentioned it just above, but I'll expand a little. I have a friend I really trust when it comes to recruiting, and he said a good comparison to Gilbert is Chase Daniel, except Gilbert has the "measurables" Daniel lacked that scared Texas away a little. He said everyone compares Gilbert to Shepard and obviously Shepard gets the dual-threat tag and Gilbert is called a pocket guy. But Gilbert can move, he's just a passer first. After hearing this I'm much, much more excited about Gilbert than I was initially. Hope that helps some.
P.S. I know the "I have a friend" thing is weak, but I trust him. A lot. He told me about Scott before it was up anywhere. Take that for what its worth.

staying open-minded
Guess I was just too quick to stereotype the guy

Only Texas ...
Has won the National title with dual-threat QB in the last 7-8 years. Leak was a thrower
2007 Matt Flynn
2006 Chris leak
2005 V Young
2004 Matt Leinart
2003 Matt Mauck
2002 Craig Krenzel
2001 Ken Dorsey
2000 Josh Huepel
1999 Chris Weinke
1998 Tee Martin
1997 Scott Frost
1996 Danny Wuerfel
Only Scott Frost and VY were dual-threat. The others were classic drop-back, spread QBs in both shotgun and under center who were smart enough to read defense, mobile enough to run when needed and they all had the will to win.
Seems like Gilbert would fit that mold. Matt Stafford and Chase Daniel did. They were two great HS quarterbacks who got away. They were classic spread QBs (pass, pass, pass, then run) who won state titles. Gilbert is the same.

Does anyone know
if Shep is set on playing QB in college?
by mmorales11 on Feb 7, 2008 1:25 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
Shep
I've read that Shep would be willing to consider a position change if Gilbert wins the job. I think he wants to play for the Horns more than he wants to play QB.

This just in ...
Darrell Scott just had an additional quote in the NY Times, saying that his mom told him, er, he figured Texas would sign Gilbert and the offense would be "too doggone pass happy".
By the way, if Meyer told Snead that he was recruiting Tebow as an LB, he is a lying mother. (What I meant to say, Jevan, is that he has the "mindset of a an LB".) But that still is big-time funny. You can see why Snead might've been hot.

If we only we Gilbert
It will be a great class. If we get both Gilbert and Sheppard it will be an insult to the rest of the country.
Go to rivals and watch Gilbert's highlight reel #2. The kid is already looks like a college QB. He has to footwork, has great zip, throws effortless, has great touch, and can actually run a bit, plus he is 6-3 210+ pounds... let him put some weight on and he will be a beast.
I know a lot of you think that Texas without a double thread QB is nothing, but two things to keep in mind:
- VY wasn't just any double threat QB. VY was a triple threat QB: he could pass, he could run, and he could turn VY-mode on. As good as RS is, and even if there's a chance he could be as good as VY, smart money says he won't.
- Dan Buckner + DJ Grant (two #1 receivers) + Desean Hales (slot) + a good polished passer (like Gilbert)= punishment of the gods in the form of a passing game.
People keep thinking that these last two years we've had issues because of the system, but that's really not that true. Colt's freshman year we did great on offense. Why did we end up losing games? Because our defense thought that giving up 40+ points to Kstate was cool, and Colt came back before he should have, while our running game decided to not exist.
This year, our Oline didn't exist and we lost our #1 receiver. As well as Nate Jones and Quan played, neither of them played like a #1 receiver.
Take a look at what our offensive unit will look like in 2010:
OL: Tray Allen, Kyle Hix, David Snow, Marc Buchanan, Aundre McGaskey, Micheal Huey
TE: Blaine Irby
RB: Jeremy Hills, Fozzy Whitaker, 09 recruits (Whaley, Pratt)
WR: Brandon Collins, Malcolm Williams, James Kirkendoll, DJ Grant, Dan Buckner, Desean Hales
QB: John Chiles, Sherrod Harris, Garret Gilbert.
Also, people keep forgetting that if we want a mobile QB, we already have John Chiles... and he's pretty damn good if yall forgot about it already...

Lol Me too
I am a LT alumni also, I graduated in 01 and this kid is killer. I went to a few football games this year, and Garrett just seemed to be on another level along with Bird his WR. Good pick up for us.

'05 baby!
Bleeding Orange, I guess you had the misfortune of missing out on the 0-10 and 1-9 seasons that preceded Dicus.
by whoopspat on Feb 7, 2008 6:21 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
Yes sir
Yeah I played for Shoemake, and we were the first team ever to win in the playoff's. Isn't it crazy what one coach can do by turning a team that went a combined 1-19 over two season's into a powerhouse? I have heard speculations that part of the reason GG committed so early was the fact that Dicus is no longer at LT and he didn't want his stock to fall.
by Bleeding Orange on Feb 7, 2008 6:32 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
nah
Did you see his press conference? It sounded like he couldn't even wait to open the offer letter before he called Mack to commit. Funny, because he played it so close to the cuff; he sounded like a some guy who played it cool about a girl until he found out that she liked him, too.
by whoopspat on Feb 7, 2008 6:51 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
I did not
hear the press confernce, and I still know some of my brother's friends who attend LT right now, and I text messaged one of them, who happens to be a good friend of Garrett's, I was like I guess Garrett is committing today, my brother's friend was like whatever man he will wait until the last minute, lol I guess he showed us all how excited he was.
