Signing Day Open Thread/Live Blog

7:11 a.m. Wake up, Longhorn fan! It's Christmas morning! Or Black Monday. Not sure yet. Ask me at the end of the day.

What we know as the day starts? Darrell Scott wanted to come to Texas. What we also know: Colorado's coaches and boosters really wanted him to come to Boulder. Add in the family pressure and most people think CU's going to win the day.

7:16 a.m. Hysteria in the midwest will continue beyond today, as Pryor's not ready to decide. I still say Michigan's the team to beat.

7:49 a.m. Though some kids will be signing their letters for Texas today, don't forget that the following are enrolled early and will work out with the team this spring: Dan Bucker, Mark Buchanan, Brock Fitzhenry, Blake Gideon, Dravannti Johnson, Jeremy Hills, Tre Newton, Justin Tucker and David Snow.

8:13 a.m. Cortexas asks in the comments if I'm alleging CU bought Scott. For the record, absolutely not. That they've been extremely aggressive in pursuing him, however, is a matter of public record.

8:18 a.m. Meet DeSean Hales.

8:28 a.m. HornFans has a list they're updating as kids sign. DJ Grant, DeSean Hales, Kheeston Randall, and DJ Monroe have all faxed in their letters.

8:54 a.m. Luke Poehlmann and Ryan Roberson's letters are in.

9:24 a.m. Cornerback Aaron Williams has signed.

9:27 a.m. Keep your eye on ESPNU at around 11:30 CST, when top-rated wide receiver Julio Jones is expected to announce; Oklahoma remains one of his finalists, along with Alabama, Florida, and Florida State.

9:35 a.m. Interesting quote from Darrell Scott in this LA Times article: "I've got my mind set on probably where I want to go and I'm going to stick with it." Though the article runs this morning, the interview is from several days prior when, among everything I heard, Scott was a heavy Texas lean. If Scott announces for CU today, I think we can safely say he changed over the weekend. Which would mean the family factor was decisive.

9:43 a.m. Wow. Tight end Dwayne Allen, who committed to Georgia on Monday, has apparently just signed with Clemson. I'd say no story is safe right now. Eighteen year old kids: still good for drama!

9:51 a.m. Four star OT Greg Shaw chose LSU this morning. Tough loss for West Virginia.

9:57 a.m. Omar Hunter is officially a Gator after backing out from his Notre Dame verbal last week. Huge coup for Urban Meyer.

9:59 a.m. As noted by HornChamps in the comments, Texas just waiting now on letters from Emmanuel Acho and Nolan Brewster.

10:01 a.m. Kapron Lewis-Moore, a four-star DE from Weatherford, made his Aggie abandonment official, signing this morning with Notre Dame. Lewis-Moore committed, de-committed, re-committed, and de-committed again from Texas A&M throughout this process.

10:08 a.m. Wide receiver Josh Jarboe made a melodramatic announcement on ESPNU for Oklahoma. Ugh. (If you missed it the Under Armour game the first time, Jarboe hid his OU hat under a UF hat, then pulled it out in dramatic fashion.)

10:21 a.m. Four star DT prospect Rod Davis won't announce Texas or Texas A&M until 7:30 this evening.

10:24 a.m. I got an email that five star Enrique Davis has apparently chosen Ole Miss, but I can't find a link to confirm. If true, great pick up for Houston Nutt.

10:32 a.m. And there's your link. Davis headed to Ole Miss.

10:40 a.m. Scott will announce at 11:50 a.m. on ESPNU. I officially can't find anyone who's predicting anything but Colorado.

10:42 a.m. The DMN reports that tailback Cyrus Gray (DeSoto) has signed with A&M. There had been some speculation that he was unsure about his commitment, but he sticks with the Agros in the end.

10:47 a.m. Done and done: All 20 of Texas' letters are signed and delivered.

11:01 a.m. Rivals reports Detroit's Nick Perry is headed to USC, choosing the Trojans over Michigan and Michigan State. If you're by a television, the recruiting coverage starts on ESPNU right now.

11:25 a.m. Is Sam McGuffie hedging on his Michigan commitment? Apparently he's not sent in a letter yet today. Nothing from Brian on this, though.

11:29 a.m. A good day keeps getting better for Clemson as Jamie Harper announces on TV he'll play for the Tigers.

11:31 a.m. Whew - Julio Jones shuns Oklahoma to stay in-state with Nick Saban. Congrats to Roll Bama Roll and the Tide.

11:48 a.m. Wide receiver TJ Lawrence makes an obnoxious hat tossing commitment to Urban Meyer.

11:51 a.m. And there it is... Darrell Scott to Colorado. Hat on head and all. [/vigil]

12:00 p.m. Anyone happy about Scott to CU? You bet: Vondrell McGee and Fozzy Whittaker. Disappointing though it is not to get the big-name recruit, we'll be ok. Important now to see whether Foz or McGee can step up this spring and fall.

12:17 p.m. I'm breaking for lunch. We'll review any afternoon surprises later. Don't forget to join Orson and I tonight for the Signing Day edition of EDSBS LIVE at 6:00 p.m. CST.

Colorado's coaches and boosters really wanted him

What does this even mean?

That CU bought Scott's commitment?  That's petty and not true.

by cortexas on Feb 6, 2008 8:02 AM CST reply actions

Of course not

That sentence cannot reasonably be read to mean that.  I take it to mean that they probably gave him a better offer---more playing time, guaranteed playing time, Scott-centric offense, etc.  That is very likely true, and there's nothing petty about it.

Just what it means

And on the public record. They've rolled out the red carpet for Scott and promised him the moon.

I'm not alleging any violations.

Use your imagination

Direct involvement with a player is a violation. Supporting the coaches and program and making clear what you want is not.

Brewster?

I know it's only 9am, but I'm eager to see Brewster LOI come in...

However, I think if he was wavering, he wouldn't wait until signing day to switch.

Well.....

However, I think if he was wavering, he wouldn't wait until signing day to switch.

.....I'm not sure why. His brother Clint (QB at Minnesota) changed his commitment from Illinois at the last moment of last year's recruiting season. Many in BigTen country believe it was an orchestrated move to keep Illinois from gaining the signature of a quality QB recruit.

I sure hope Tim would never be a party to such a move. He too good for that and doesn't need to manipulate in order to build a quality program.

life without DS

I know we were all jacked about DS, but even without him, it sounds like we've got some great talent coming in.  I'm more interested in recruiting for need than recruiting the splashy players...though I'd take the uber-talents any day.  Even without DS, we've got a lot of talent at RB, so I don't consider it a massive loss...especially because he's going to exile in Boulder and not to our backyard in Norman.  We need to keep that in mind

Question:  Admittedly, I'm playing catchup here.  Did we get what we needed to in this class?  Where were the biggest personnel holes?  How do our incoming guys fill them?

I really hope...

Yall don't make this Darrell Scott thing a big deal, because it's not. We have an embarrassment of riches in terms of RBs here at Texas. We'll be fine. Hell, Scott's attitude wasn't even fit for Texas. We're better off without him. Basically this was all like a comedy from the 80s...the main character is tempted by some uber hot girl who isn't really made for him, but in the end he chooses his friend who has always liked him, and him her, just not realizing it until the end of the film, that she was better for him than the other.......think Teen Wolf......but not Teen Wolf 2.

Really?

This is different to me.  Given the choice of taking the hot girl or not, we'll take her (that's what an offer is).  The fact that he doesn't pick us doesn't resolve the conflict.  It will be like what you said if the hot girl is all "oh, I love you!" and we're all "retracting the offer, biatch!"  And then we pimp slap her and walk away.  This way we're more like "well we're better off without you anyway, jerk!"

Did it come down to RB coach?

This might be far fetched but I wonder if the decision came down to coaching.  I don't know what CU brings in a rb coach but if I'm a recruit I might question Applewhite as my coach or if I'm CU, I might use this against UT.  If I'm an incoming freshman I know I'm getting Applewhite next year and maybe for the following year before he moves up. Then I get a new coach my junior year before I go pro.  I'm glad Applewhite is here but I wonder if Rucker would have swayed Scott's decision.  Rucker had a special relationship with Charles.  Just a thought...I for one feel Scott is a bit full of himself by already making demands before he steps foot onto a campus.  These "me" players usually end up being a team cancer.  He'll question his decision soon.

by Texas_Trainspotter on Feb 6, 2008 1:05 PM CST reply actions

Momma

More likely Momma put her foot down and said he had to go to Colorado because she wanted her brother (Scott's uncle who plays wide receiver at Col.) to watch over her boy and make sure that her boy did not get in trouble.  As a parent who had 3 kids who all got into varying degrees of trouble during college, I understand her thinking.

I now understand why Mack likes to get all this recruiting stuff settled as early as possible.  It is irritating and demeaning to wait with baited breath on the decision of an 18 year old kid.

by Kafka on Feb 6, 2008 1:25 PM CST up reply actions

Offensive skill players

UT lost its 3 most talented offensive skill players: Charles, Finley, and Sweed.  Sweed got hurt and finley did not have a real big year anyway (except against OU) but Charles had a huge year.  Does anybody think that the horns will have a running back run anywhere near that well next year?  Losing Scott is potentially a big loss.

The whole offensive team will have to step up its game to make up the difference.  Colt, in particular, just has to cut down on his fumbles and interceptions.  One or more of the young wide receivers (maybe Dan Buckner) is going to have to burst out as the tall, fast deep threat that stretches the D.  Maybe Cody Johnson (5'10", 240, 4.4) can give the horns the power running they have lacked since Cedric.  Maybe Blaine Irby can have a big year at tight end (though he is physically inferior to Finley).  Maybe GD can figure out how to use Chiles more effectively.  The OL will probably block better than they did for much of last year (but they could block better and still not be that great).

The horns offense is not going to be able to just overwhelm most of the Big 12 competition with talent.  GD is going to have to improve the offensive scheme and use the young talent from recent recruiting classes.  Maybe Major will make a big difference.

I saw last night on a CU msg board that "TexASS whorns" would be sorely disapppointed today.  Well, we surely are, but at least we're not Buffs. CU fans are among the most classless nationally, not simply in the Big 12.

I agree that Scott made a wrongheaded decision, from a football decision.  So, let's wish him well and not make this too personal.

Besides, a momma's boy with a lisp can only take so much.

"Boom ... D-Scott".

See you on 10/4, good buddy.

Best fans sit in the corner of the end zone, where we can see the whites of the enemy's eyes and jingle keys whilst they leave ...

Watch It

If you all keep calling Scott a Mama's Boy, then Dan Hawkins may go all Mike Gundy on us.  On second thought...

Screw Scott

By choosing to go into an inferior program he has revealed that he lacks the will to become a champion.
