Garrett Gilbert Set To Announce
Five star quarterback Garrett Gilbert (Lake Travis) is holding a 4:00 p.m. press conference to announce his commitment. The recruitingtocracy thinks it's to Texas.
And Texas it is... Congratulations to Gilbert and to Mack Brown. Great way to start the 2009 class.
Now let's get Russell Shepard, too.

What's the news!
I have no idea where to listen/watch this.
Is that good?
That sounds good!
Colorado?
I just don't understand. But seriously, get snag on Signing Day + 1. A little shot across the bow to all who think Mack may be losing his touch.

I believe
Major coming back to UT had something to do with his decision. The kid probably saw Major a few times at DKR. Yes, a great start for 2009. Major already showing a return in MB's investment in my opinion.
Gilbert has always wanted UT
even before Major came back
Great commitment for UT. We see how Gilbert's HS predecessor is doing in Lawrence. And Gilbert is waaayy better. Though he still has GD at the helm
I just don't know...
Don't get me wrong. I love the fact that we landed this kid a day after signing day. Now, I hadn't seen him play until I clicked on the video feed, but it looked to me like he had a little bit of Jeff George syndrome with those happy feet. Did anyone else notice that? I just hope that his commitment doesn't affect our ability to get Shepard, who I also haven't seen play and have no idea how good he really is.
Hot Hands ... you remind me ...
Of those people who call in after a 30-point Texas win and complain about the running game ... or Greg Davis. Kid is good. Plus, we fired off a big round on Signing Day + 1. Jeff George? Did you see him in high school? Man ... it's raining, somewhere.

You're right
I am really pumped about us getting a kid that good, that really wants to come to Texas. Recruiters and recruiting websites are likely more qualified to evaluate talent than me watching a highlight video one time. I was just offering my thoughts, and while it doesn't happen very often I have been wrong before.
How would you do it differently?
So you're concerned that signing Gilbert affects our recruitment of Shepard. What would be the alternative you propose?
no matter what you do
you can't worry about how the other feels and this and that. You recruit them individually and let the chips fall where they may. If Shep had committed first he could have always changed his mind once Gilbert committed. I think both guys are probably mature enough to understand the Horns are probably going to sign 2 QBs in next year's class no matter how you cut it. Plus, I hope Shep is anxious about competing for a starting job and not worried about who else could be recruited. All this talk is silly -- If he doesn't think he can beat out Gilbert, then how confident could he be about beating OU?

For what it's worth
I thought his footwork was excellent. The other thing he did really well was step into his throws in the pocket. That was always a problem with Simms.
I'm no expert
But I don't usually notice footwork of a QB. This time I noticed. Maybe I was just being more attentive but I thought he was doing something a little strange. Not saying it was bad or wrong because I know NOTHING about QB but it did strike me as odd
This is two years worth of film.
His sophomore year is up to about the 4 minute mark. The 2007 season follows, so some of you hawkeyes might check for happy feet and year-on-year improvement.
LT is in our district. They're run this offense for a long, long time, well over 12 years, long before most teams in this region. They were always a losing team up until the late 1990s.
And while I've seen them play many times, I haven't seen Gilbert yet. Missed the '06 game and was out of town for last fall's game. However, my buddies, including a couple of retired coaches, said he has some real elusiveness and great accuracy, both in the pocket and especially on the run, with a quick release.
Pflugerville Connally was their toughest district game and the video of that would be of interest; close game. Now Connally has moved to 5A and was replaced by Killeen, probably even faster than Connally (but generally not quite as skilled or tough a football team).
Homegrown
take that colorado
strike quick and strong. a message to other programs
that we are not going anywhere but up. now let's stay instate for all recruits and let the nation know it. maybe the jerery calhouns of the world won't go north to the hated land-thieves!!
we can win all NCs with instate talent and recruiting out-of-state has shown to be basically a waste of time.
(Ricky Williams the notable exception). We don't need any Heismans anyway. it is all political.
yeah, texas didn't recruit calhoun
he probably would have come to texas if offered, but Mack said no, supposedly because of grades issues or something.
When I read the "yeah"
I instantly go to Office Space voice in my head, is that what you were going for?
30 point win
The 30 point win analogy is perfect. The kid throws for a gazillion yards and we need to think twice because someone sees happy feet on a junior QB.

My son would've gone to UT to play Soccer but
no UT soccer for men.........He had to go to Hardin-Simmons instead....Ok he still got to go to 2 NCAA's instead.................Welcome HornsSoccer11
Excitement
I am really excited about this early commitment for many reasons, but the biggest may be that he will help immensely for the rest of the 09 recruiting class. For he two junior days coming up this month, Mack can tell all the offensive prospects that "we just got the #2 qb, #12 player overall, to commit; let that simmer for a sec." It will encourage the RBs and WRs especially to know who their future gunslinger is before they commit.
I think it's a big deal to get one of the most important commitments first so that others won't hesitate to follow suit.
Well...
The number 11 is my jersy number but I am not that girl
And definetly sucks that UT doesn't have a men's soccer program because Texas would win championship upon championship in soccer because the state is stacked with great soccer players who would die for the chance to play at UT ...something I hope will change overtime.

not to mention
The incredible international student population at this school. Go to the IM fields sometime and watch the games going on. It's a mini world Cup.
Totally agree
with the soccer talent in the state of Texas.
Good grief!
Guy is a freak. Wow, I hadn't seen clips of him. He makes Jamaal look like he was on crutches. Okay, I exaggerate a little ... but we need to reel him in. Until about half-way through he doesn't even throw a pass, but with his running ability it's like having three extra blockers on the field.
If he wants to come to UT, let's hope we can snag him and convince him to compete with Gilbert. If he doesn't win out as a QB, he could be an outstanding slot guy and kick returner. Just put the ball in his hands. Unbelievable athlete.

Interesting...
So I'm guessing I'm not the first person to think this, but a guy #10 who's a running QB and what looks like a wonky pass? Sound familiar to anyone? I'm not saying there exists the possibility of there being another VY anytime in my life time, but this kid has similar moves (and might have deliberately chosen that number) and seems to evade defenders with the greatest of ease. He made most of those guys look like they weren't even there! Anyway, let's hope we get him!

Stole the words out of my mouth
If he doesn't win out as a QB, he could be an outstanding slot guy and kick returner.
My thoughts exactly. If he's got moves like that, he needs to have the ball in his hands as much as possible.
This team seems to run from the spread.
Which I've seen both Harker Heights and Rodgers do in the same manner. Great sense of space and speed to get to the breakaway point.
One of those early runs looked like Sherrod's 70-yard TD in the Spring Game last year.
I want Letters of Intent, an early signing period
would make me feel better about these early commitments.
That would be nice
to see as well. Although with Gilbert I can already sense that burnt orange blood has been running through his veins for many, many years.

That's what I like to see
Guys that have their mind made up early on and don't drag their feet with four or five different schools just for the sake of being in the spotlight on signing day. And yes to add to what has been said we have so much talent in Texas that we don't need to recruit outside of the state.
I look forward to watching Gilbert on the Saturdays to come.

Couldn't agree more, and the new fad is guys not
even declaring on signing day (Vidal Hazelton and now Pryor) because they don't want to let go of that national spotlight along with everybody else. Meanwhile, good players are graduating early and getting an extra spring practice to adjust to college (to say nothing of a semester worth of credits to help them get ahead).
Gilbert + receivers
The kid's a beast with the ball, those passes were amazing! I realize it's a highlight reel, so we're not going to see the INTs or incompletes, but it was impressive and fun and I look forward to having him at Texas.
But did you check out those receivers? 6 and 11 in the beginning part of the video, does anyone know the scoop on them? Perhaps Mack should look into getting those guys, too, since it looked like they had pretty decent hands (they might not be Limas or Roy, but who really can be?).
Thoughts from someone who doesn't know that much :)
Garret Gilbert commit
Great news for Texas! I think good things come if they stick with Texas players.
TEXAS ONLY RECRUITS/PB
it seems from reading all comments that many agree with me that we should recruit ONLY TEXAS players (unless someone comes to US and wants to commit) and LET THE WHOLE NATION AND STATE KNOW!
It would improve high school coaching ties, keep out of state players playing games with us, increase
efficiency, and make us truly "WE'RE TEXAS" as Walter Cronkite says. It would probably keep some great talent even looking to the land-thieves and develop incredible loyalty. The talent here is tops
and 20 or so each year could easily but us in the top 5 classes EVERY YEAR. A Heisman trophy winner is in Texas every year although i would trade a truckload of Heismans to win NCs anyday (sorry Ricky). the Heisman is now a political contest.
Of course it would be silly to turn down a strong out of state guy who we did not have to spend months
working on. Mack is back with fire. Let's use it.
out of state talent has not won us a NC and probably never will.
