Last week, Texas handled Rice and took a huge step towards taking the Texas division. To go along with my match report from last week, check out the highlights, courtesy of Second Side Captain Badger Denehy:
This week, your Texas Rugby team will once again hit the road today on their way to "God's Country"... or as some have said it, "God's Blind Spot." That's right, everyone, we're taking on those good ol' boys, the Texas Tech
REEEEEEEEEEEEEEED
RAAAAAAIIIIDDDDDDEEEEERRRRRSSSSS!
After last week, Texas sits atop its conference along with Sam Houston State and LSU. A&M's loss to LSU was a huge upset that has cracked the Texas division wide open. The 'Horns look to keep the momentum going against a Tech team that went down to #25 Sam Houston State last week, 29-10.
Texas' backs have had a really good week at practice on both sides of the ball, and the coaches have made some defensive adjustments that should help eliminate mistakes like the breakaway try given up at Rice last week. It's difficult to predict how a game will go, especially this early in the season, as the only information I've got is about one paragraph on each match written by the referees.
That said, the one thing the ref mentioned in his writeup of the Tech vs. SHSU game was Tech's strong back line. If you believe him, then this will be a much more difficult test than the Rice game, as Rice had difficulty moving the ball with forwards or backs. Texas will be relying on those defensive adjustments to take away the back line as a part of the offense. If it works, expect a low score on the Tech side, if not, the Texas attack had better be on its best behavior, and the score could start to look like a Tech vs. Texas football game.
Anyone in the Lubbock area is welcome to come out and cheer on the 'Horns. Our biggest hitters always enjoy hearing "Ooohh, HELL YEAH!" from more than just the second side.
If Texas takes this game, it will be huge in keeping alive Longhorn playoff hopes. Coming up are three straight matches against ranked opponents, and more than one well-placed loss in this conference is a death sentence. I'll have a match report up, probably by Monday. Until then...
Ruck 'em,
Maul 'em,
Hook 'em, 'Horns!
