The Darrell Scott cheating rumors
are false.
If you don't believe me, check the
NY Times article covering his recruitment.

Darrell Scott's mother, Alexis, did not receive some rumored bank job.
She works as a manager at an OB/GYN clinic.
To believe that she would all of a sudden switch career fields just b/c someone wanted her son to play football for their school is asinine.
The rumor mongering about cheating and Darrell Scott is taking a racist slant, b/c many are assuming that b/c Darrell and Alexis are Black, Alexis can't possibly be self-sufficient and support herself and her family.
Y'all should be better than that.
I've heard the an explanation of what happened with Scott from someone who works in the Colorado athletic department, and his decision to go to CU had nothing to do with boosters offering jobs, and everything to do with texas' new RB coach.
Suffice it to say, the next time Applewhite does an in-home recruiting visit, he needs to do some research about the kid he is recruiting before he steps in the door.

Why are you generalizing?
I don't think everyone here is suggesting some kind of cheating. In fact most people have already gotten over it.
It's almost like you as an Aggie are trying to use this as some sort of validation or moral victory that Aggies are classier.
And why are YOU bringing race into this? That was YOU. Not us. You're the one that's trying to spin these "accusations" to MAKE them racial. That was all you.
I still think it's weird that we hired major to be the RB coach. Did Major really cost us Scott? That sucks if true. Would Major even be here had Rucker not gotten cancer?

another posting about this same NYT article.

Wow
That was a bit of a stretch to drop the race card, huh?

Thanks Beergut
for pointing this article out for me. I managed to avoid noticing the three other diaries directly talking about this article. Without your keen observational skills, all of us here at BON would be lost.
It's also refreshing that an Aggie would have the unmitigated gall to suggest that some Longhorn fans might be "racist". I'd use the regular cliche here about cast-iron cookware, but that might reinforce your point. I'll also refrain from pointing out all of the recent cases of blatantly overt racism down in College Station, because I'm sure an informed Aggie such as yourself is quite aware of them (and should be ashamed, but hey, "tradition" and "values" are more important than respect for your fellow human beings, right?).
Lastly, let me reiterate a point I made previously: Beergut, you are a complete and total Aggie.

Please show me
where it has been posted on BON that "b/c Darrell and Alexis are Black, Alexis can't possibly be self-sufficient and support herself and her family."
That is the kind of shit you would read on an aggie blog. If you actually read an aggie blog.

lol @ the racial slant
that's a bit of a stretch
i never thought i'd be the one to say this
lord knows me and my black power fist tattoo spend a lot of time fighting fights with shadows that other people don't see
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...
but come the hell on ... common sense says that
if a child gets a full scholarship to go and live in another state
full athletic scholarship
that parent no longer has to support that child in food and energy consumption for the time being
so if anything she's getting considerably more money because it's not being spent directly like that on a child
booooooo this man
i know it's the internet ... but this is the biggest pile of horseshit i've seen in a while ... and i take offense that someone is trying to take this in THAT direction

This post is crazy on so many counts.
First, we've all seen this article before. Second, we've also seen other sources claiming that there was cheating. The evidence conflicts; why do you blindly follow one thread of evidence, to the exclusion of the others? And finally, race? Come on.
I agree with others who have said that it's aggy of us to keep this story alive. I'm happy to let it go and don't mean to keep it going by responding here. But your diary is, again, crazy.
by mikey 4 on Feb 8, 2008 7:36 AM CST 0 recs
I've read 100s of posts on the story...
and not one mentions race. We don't need that BS here. You have zero credibility. Really weak on your part, Gut.

I love how Beergut attacks readers of this blog before informing himself fully of the entire story. Check out this follow up piece to the DS saga. It's not just Texas fans who smell something fishy.

Hey Beergut...
...would your opinion change if it turns out there's a tape recording of a phone conversation between Alexis Smith and Bobby Kennedy in which she tries to get him to match or top an illegal inducement offered by someone in Colorado and he refused to do so?
by Slick16 on Feb 8, 2008 9:19 AM CST 0 recs
Is this theoretical?
Or do you actually think there is a tape out there?

There is reference to a tape...
...on the DMN Recruiting Blog, as follows:
Posted by Kevin T. @ 9:33 PM Thu, Feb 07, 2008
The Big XII and NCAA have received a grievance claim regarding Darrell Scott and are expected to report that enough information exists to warrant an investigation. For all the CU fans that want to believe this is just all a bunch of sour grapes, I'm sorry to report that there is a lot to this story. I can't go into detail, but there were improprieties at the hands of Alexis Scott. I won't make claims, b/c I don't know squat about Darrell Scott, but recordings were made of a key call between Bobby Kennedy & Alexis Scott, in which she pretty much asked him to beat the best offer they'd received from Colorado. I have not heard the call, but I have seen the initial transcripts. After Kennedy refused to do any illegal recruiting, she sent him a text message, "thanx for everything. MOM" Two days later Darrell committed to Colorado. It should be noted, he committed to Texas on 1/23 & again on 1/31. The Major Applewhite hire occurred a week before he 1st committed.
http://recruitingbuzz.beloblog.com/a...
More unsubstantiated rumor, to be sure, but it meshes with a lot of other things we've previously heard. Time will tell...

That seems false for two reasons
One, Mack, while paraphrasing Joe Pa, seemed to say he does not report violations because it does not do any good.
Two, I would not think that anyone would be dumb enough to directly ask a coach to match an offer from a booster over a phone call, but then again, I am amazed by how stupid criminals are everyday.

I would think...
...as a general rule, Mack probably doesn't report violations where the evidence is thin. It seems possible in this instance that the evidence might be compelling, and the Scotts made it personal with some of their remarks and actions with regard to Applewhite and Kennedy. If, in fact, a tape does exist that proves the violation occurred, I would expect they would feel ethically obligated to turn it over to someone.
As to whether people are stupid enough to discuss illegalities or rules violations over the phone, it happens every day. I try not to underestimate the stupidity of people who lack character. ;)

Huh...
I happen to like Colorado.
Let's see:
- Owners of the infamous 5th down play
- Owners of the Kordell Stewart hail mary
- Team of said Stewart and Michael Westbrook, two of my favorite college players growing up
- Arch-rival of Nebraska, who I absolutely despised growing up
- Was amiable to providing the 11% to potential recruits (ok, that one turned out to be not very nice)
- The only team that was agreeable enough to get trounced twice by us on our way to NC #4
- Coached by Dan Hawkins, who laid the foundation for Boise to hook and ladder OU and cause great embarrassment to the Sooner community
- Also beat the pants off OU last year, which would've been much nicer had we not lost to K-State later that day
- Second-best party school in the Big XII. Unless you're into stuff like this.

Didn't know where to put this...
But here's a nice feature on the soon-to-be-hated Jermie Calhoun. It's hard to root against players who end up making it out of rural Texas towns (a la Friday Night Lights), but somehow the crimson on the jersey sure makes it easy.

"Y'all" is texas fans on this blog
The same type of rumors about cheating came from texas fans when Martellus Bennett ended up choosing A&M.
The claim then was that Bennett's father had been given a job in a car dealership owned by an Aggie (nevermind that Bennett's dad worked in tech support, everyone wants to work at a car dealership, right?).
I just think it is ridiculous and petty that when y'all lose to a coveted recruit you think you have a great chance of landing, y'all automatically pull the 'cheating' card.
As shocking as it may be to some of you, not everyone in the world wants to play football for texas. Seeing Ohio State, Florida, SC, and LSU in the last three national title games should have shown you that.
After Martellus signed with A&M, there were claims that texas was turning him in to the NCAA, too, and nothing came of that.
As for my comment about racism, sorry, but the thinking that "You're Black, therefore you don't have a job, therefore you'd be willing to sell your kid to a college for a job" is latently racist. I think the same thing about Aggies who say the same BS.
goingforthecorner,
Yes, from the information I've received, Major cost you Scott. As to whether or not he would be RB coach if Rucker was still healthy, I have no idea. What I don't understand is why Rucker, even though he is now in charge fo HS relations/player development, was allowed to keep recruiting Scott. If Rucker was the point man on Scott, he would be walking around with a burnt orange cap on right now, imo.
by Beergut on Feb 9, 2008 12:00 PM CST 0 recs
this is all ridiculous
First of all, I've been on this blog for 3 years and this is the first time I've ever heard anyone ever insinuate that there may have been some cheating by a player who didn't go to texas. As far as I remember, no one suggested that we lost Perrilloux because of cheating. Same deal with Brantley last year. I never saw anything on this blog about Martellus Bennett cheating rumors. Maybe one person here or there mentioned that the rumors existed, but I don't remember even that much.
And for the love of god, stop playing the race card. I've called out people for saying latently racist things on this blog before and I'll do it again if I see it, but this is ridiculous. The cheating rumors have nothing to do with him being black (Perrilloux is black, you'll recall).
The rumors exist because Scott's explanation for why he chose CU over UT is so oblique and doesn't make much logical sense, whereas the explanation that seems the most reasonable is that he was getting family pressure to go to CU and came up with this RB coach stuff to clear his cognitive dissonance about choosing CU when deep down he personally thought he should go to UT. And when you get a lot of family pressure, you question why that pressure is there. Undoubtedly, the uncle is a part of that, but is that everything? Who knows.
Now, is this what actually happened? Who the hell knows? Not you or I, that's for sure. But my point isn't that the rumors are true, but rather why they got started in the first place if they're not actually true. No one's saying that his mom doesn't have a job because she's black. All anyone is saying (and I'll remind you that these rumors did not originate on BON) is that it would not be unreasonable for a single mother to want to go live near her brother and only son rather than have to travel a thousand miles to see them.
And it wouldn't be the first time that a university has set up someone with employment so they could get a superstar. Universities do this stuff all the time with the spouses of professors they're trying to woo. NYU Law School even gives many of its new professors posh townhouses in the Village to ease the transition to New York and to convince them to come. And those folks very often are not black, poor or jobless. It's a perfectly reasonable thing to do. The only difference here is that it's against NCAA rules to do it for a recruit.
I'm not saying it happened or it didn't. I'm just saying that you need to shut the fuck up and think before you start accusing an entire fanbase of being racist, egomaniacal assholes, especially those in the BON community, which has proven itself over and over again to be one of the most level-headed fanbases on the internet.

You did lose Perrilloux b/c of cheating
LSU set his mama up with a house. He used texas as leverage in the bidding war for his services.
As for Scott, Applewhite came into Scott's house for his in-home visit right after taking the RB job at texas. All he knew was that it was between CU and texas.
He badmouthed Colorado, to the point that Scott stopped him and said, "You know that my uncle and some friends of mine play for Colorado, right?"
After the visit ended, Scott told Kennedy he was welcome at his house anytime, but to not bring Applewhite back.

the Paul Johnson thing
My source on the Paul Johnson situation was another coach who is a buddy of Johnson's. It was from the morning after Johnson had first interviewed with SMU.
This was BEFORE he talked to Ga Tech; it was very early in the process.
My source for the Scott situation is someone who isn't a coach, but works in the athletic department at CU.

So was this the same source
whose information made you "convinced he was [Texas']." Because if so, bang up job there.
I'll stop being a dick soon, I promise (though I think calling us racists buys me a little space in the "i'm going to be a dick to you" timeframe), but inside sources are dumb. Everyone's got an inside source and they all say different things and as such, most of them are wrong.
No one knows what happened in that meeting with Applewhite except the people who were there. Unless your guy was there, his word is no better than any of the other million "sources" that yahoos on the internet like yourself claim to have. Stop reporting as truth your opinion, other people's opinions, and a rumor you heard from a guy who wasn't even there.

Actually
I'd say Major did us a favor. From what I'm being told as to why DS transferred from Moorpark to St. Bonaventure, we really don't what this kinda kid at the 40 acres. (And this comes from a high school football coach in the area.)
Mack Brown and the Texas staff did the 100% correct thing in bringing in Major now rather than waiting until after signing day. To me, it would have been dishonest to have done otherwise.
Major Applewhite > Darrell Scott any day.
